I worked with Leighton doing a bit of modeling for a project he was directing in Buda, TX. The experience was largely unprofessional and incredibly frustrating. Allow me to explain.
From what I could discern, he entirely relied on the photographer he hired to also handle wardrobe, casting, and creative direction.
I get it.
He wanted to cut corners so he could make a bit more cash at the end. It certainly didn't come across as professional, but whatever. He was going to pay me $100 for the day and I had little to do so I took the job. From first introductions, he was a bit of a dick. He immediately dismissed one of the female models that was pulled into the project last minute because she had tattoos and a nose ring. The announcement put out for models was not specific in what the limitations would be so it was absolutely absurd that he had her drive 20 minutes to the shoot only to dismiss her without any compensation. And though he didn't come outright and say it, I have a feeling that if she had been white that the nose ring and tattoos wouldn't have been an issue.
The rest of the shoot was entirely unorganized by no fault of the photographer, but because he had no clear vision of what he wanted and was short with everyone the entire time. By the end of the shoot both crew and cast felt as though we were enduring the entire experience. But we signed our contracts to get paid and that was it.
Regardless of the contract we signed, the confirmation that he'd be reaching out the next week for payment, and countless phone calls/texts/emails from me, he neglected to pay me the measly $100 for 6 months. In what industry in the world is it okay to withhold pay from anyone for 6 months?
If you're considering using Wild Honey, think twice about the character of the people you want to work with. His track record may look good because he's worked with big projects, but he's done so by being an unresponsive and selfish director.
I hope potential clients all start to turn away from Wild Honey. It's not worth it.
