Nice atmosphere, lovely staff and a good beer selection
Love this Wine Bar - it's been a favourite for years. Great atmosphere.
Very crowded on a rugby lunchtime but the staff coped well and we got drinks without o much of a problem. Well located and decent place to go.
Lovely atmosphere and very romantic with the wine cellars at the back...
Whighams has good food, fine wine and real ale. It is a comfortable, well run establishment.
Great especially if you like fish. There is very exquisite food and a very good selection of wines. The service is very friendly and helpful and there are dishes of the day, which are also highly recommended. The roast beef shouldn't be eaten. But overall excellent. Insider tip: the cheese platter with an Australian dessert wine
Great. I've been a regular here since it opened in 1983.
My favorite place on Sundays in the afternoon. Live jazz music. And you can eat too. Have a drink or a good wine.
Jazz groups change every 30 minutes ... it's always different. The atmosphere is very nice.
Nice bar at the west end of edinbugh. Good place to meet up with friends as no loud music so you can hear what your friends are saying! There is live music some evenings during the month and the restaurant provides a nice selection of food using high quality locally sourced produce.
Very good food, very fast service, friendly staff. Great choice of beers. Recommended.
Excellent historic Edinburgh bar restaurant, can be expensive though.
Nice selection of wines and other beverages. The little alcoves let you have a little bit of privacy and makes it easier to chat in.
Also, the staff knew when my hubby had had enough to drink!!
I'd happily visit again.
Superb wine list, excellent beers on tap, delicious food.
The unique aspect is the wonderful setting: lots of cellar-alcoves for your own group, but all opening into a friendly bar circle, and an open seated area. They have great jazz on Sundays.
Character++, a laid back, birth-of-cool feel, and never once bad service. Highly recommended!!
Nice subterranean wine bar with good food and interesting private alcoves for cosy atmosphere.
Not been for nearly 15 years, forgotten how nice it is. Will return soon.
Great food and staff here.
Warm and friendly, with live music on many nights of the week too
Great wee place for a drink after dinner. There's cosy little nooks that seat about 8 people. The wine list is reasonable, and there's a decent buzz about the place without it being noisy. Good for dates.
Ok don't rush here service ok clientele full of themselves
This restaurant is as magical, magnificent, and food delicious as it was 33 years ago when I first enjoyed lunches here....and the wines are simply world class. But do you know what's better? The staff here are real professionals. Service top class. Hygiene unsurpassable.
I tell friends and relatives. It's worth driving miles! Best wishes to ALL the staff. A big well done.
Arrived Sunday 7.30 pm. Was in end booth as requested a quiet spot, perfect!
Never felt forgotten despite being on the outskirts! Lovely wine menu and loved the fact so many by the glass, really enjoyed the food. Food service was really quick.
Will be returning!
Nice and cosy, but doesnt feel like everyone is on top of you. Can also hear when people are talking to you, but not hear the next table talking. Friendly staff (xmas lunchtime) and not too pressuring.
Good food. Good coffee. Cleans loos. Will go again.
Nice restaurant with a good selection of dishes and menu options. If you looking for nibbles or you want many courses, you will definitely find something mouthwatering. Staff is very friendly and the place has a good atmosphere.
Love the jazz and blues nights here every Sunday and Tuesday.
One of my favourite places for a boozy lunch. The oysters are to die for - served with a sweet and tart raspberry dressing. Comforting, warming food, a fantastic selection of wines and fizz by the bottle or glass and friendly service make this a must-visit!
Underground - basement bar popular with rugby type clientele - worth a visit
One of the best wine bars in the West end of Edinburgh
I had booked a table for 8pm for two and we knew there was to be a live jazz band playing which was great as I was looking for this anyway. Starters ordered were chicken liver parfait with oatcakes and prawn coctail. Both were very tasty. For mains my girlfriend had a white fish on a bed of greens and potatoes which was presented to the highest degree of care. I couldn't say the same for the roast beef salad main course - it looked like a simple side salad. I ate it though and I drank more to make up for my disappointment. Music was good.
Basement bar with a great atmosphere. Has various nooks and crannies which are excellent for groups. They are perhaps best described as "caves" lit by candle lanterns. There were 6 people in our group and we could have accommodated 10 comfortably, possibly 12 at a squeeze in our cave. There are also more traditional seating and bar - side seats. I can't comment on the prices as I was a guest. From what I observed the bar staff appeared to be friendly and helpful. Will certainly go back. Situated in Hope Street within a short walk from Princes Street.
Had a great night with the Orvis team. Great food, great atmosphere, highly recommended.
An Edinburgh institution, well with checking out their jazz evenings:)
I find myself spending evenings in here sipping tasty wines.
In a New Town basement so there is very limited cell phone reception. Great place to disconnect and wind down.
Upon request, the friendly staff make a cracking amaretto hot chocolate. As well as drinks and food, the coffee and tea selection is excellent.
If you are looking for somewhere to wind down or shelter from the rain in the West End, I would recommend this establishment.
Not impressed. Food ok but the service was awful! The staff were too involved in chatting with each other - should have been attentive to the patrons. Don't think it even deserves one s star
A first time visit. Went for the live music. A Jazz band. Very enjoyable. Great atmosphere. Nice interior. Drinks expensive if you like your wine.
Always like Whighans but it's lost a bit of its bohemian flavour in recent years as the professionals and businessmen have taken over from the student set. Still great wines good food and fine setting.
This is a wine bar and restaurant in a cellar... sounds iffy but is really good. The local real ale was excellent and the establishment is dog friendly. We only had a drink but did look at the tapas menu and thought it was reasonably priced. There were 4 small annexe areas to the side which were like small rooms ideal for a small group of friends to enjoy and be private.
Got to love Whighams. More wines than you can shake a stick at. Nice crowd. Great atmosphere.
I ordered prawn cocktail as a starter when it came there was about 10 prawns on limp yellow rocket lettuce also wet slime lettuce I only ate the prawns then I ordered traditional roast beef and horseradish potatoes the same lettuce with a More
Food was good - the haggis croquettes were a highlight. We did however get served by 3 waiters/waitresses and they tried to bring or mains out before we'd received all our starters. I had a raw langoustine in my main which could have been disastrous. Overall great selection of wines and food was 4/5 star minus the dodge langoustine. Service was a bit variable, so room for improvement.
Lighted candles everywhere, which lends it a certain ambience, bar staff are the best, and has excellent ales!!
Had to send food back. Noisy, cold and unfriendly. Really disappointed.
Nice friendly place, only had drinks, but the food menu looked good, pleasant staff, and good service.
All round very nice experience, staff, choice of wines and decor.
Great busy bar for a quick drink after shopping or work...
Always loved this place and it doesn't loose it's charm.
Excellent food, good atmosphere.
Live Jazz twice a week
Great atmosphere good food lost a star for not serving freshly made chips eith the beautiful beer battered haddock.
west end wine bar with a good ambience friendly staff I like the little caves you can sit in Prices are a bit steep but it is right in the west end
Nice atmosphere, on balance one of the best priced West end bar's in Edinburgh. I wouldn't consider it a sports bar but will have a TV/screen on for main stuff.... Can't comment on the food but I'm well informed it's very good.
Every visit is a special treat, I would to know what could be better, NH
An Edinburgh institution, well located and well catered pub/restaurant.
Has its own thing going..old school and avoids trends remains a solid place for good many.
A beautiful and atmospheric bar set in the basement of a great building. The dining area has an open and friendly feel to it, whilst the alcoves and sandstone (maybe?) walls provide a far more intimate environment completed by many candles. A good wine list with regular updates, grouped by country. Additionally some less common beers compliment their offerings at a reasonable price (compared to more famous bars on George St).
Great place to have a lunch or a dinner. Lots of beers, great wine list, nice food. In rush hours the service can be a little slow.
Great long established bar in Edinburgh. Open mike Jazz on Sunday night and Blues on Tuesday. Quality of singing amazing.
Good atmosphere, reasonable food, good selection of wines. Average overall. No complaints but nothing to brag about either.
Lovely little wine bar. In a basement, so poor signal, but a great place to head before/after dinner
Had a great evening and the food was lovely. Really busy place though but well worth a visit
