Great especially if you like fish. There is very exquisite food and a very good selection of wines. The service is very friendly and helpful and there are dishes of the day, which are also highly recommended. The roast beef shouldn't be eaten. But overall excellent. Insider tip: the cheese platter with an Australian dessert wine

My favorite place on Sundays in the afternoon. Live jazz music. And you can eat too. Have a drink or a good wine.
Jazz groups change every 30 minutes ... it's always different. The atmosphere is very nice.

Nice bar at the west end of edinbugh. Good place to meet up with friends as no loud music so you can hear what your friends are saying! There is live music some evenings during the month and the restaurant provides a nice selection of food using high quality locally sourced produce.

Nice selection of wines and other beverages. The little alcoves let you have a little bit of privacy and makes it easier to chat in.

Also, the staff knew when my hubby had had enough to drink!!

I'd happily visit again.

Superb wine list, excellent beers on tap, delicious food.

The unique aspect is the wonderful setting: lots of cellar-alcoves for your own group, but all opening into a friendly bar circle, and an open seated area. They have great jazz on Sundays.

Character++, a laid back, birth-of-cool feel, and never once bad service. Highly recommended!!

Great wee place for a drink after dinner. There's cosy little nooks that seat about 8 people. The wine list is reasonable, and there's a decent buzz about the place without it being noisy. Good for dates.

This restaurant is as magical, magnificent, and food delicious as it was 33 years ago when I first enjoyed lunches here....and the wines are simply world class. But do you know what's better? The staff here are real professionals. Service top class. Hygiene unsurpassable.
I tell friends and relatives. It's worth driving miles! Best wishes to ALL the staff. A big well done.

Arrived Sunday 7.30 pm. Was in end booth as requested a quiet spot, perfect!
Never felt forgotten despite being on the outskirts! Lovely wine menu and loved the fact so many by the glass, really enjoyed the food. Food service was really quick.
Will be returning!

Nice and cosy, but doesnt feel like everyone is on top of you. Can also hear when people are talking to you, but not hear the next table talking. Friendly staff (xmas lunchtime) and not too pressuring.
Good food. Good coffee. Cleans loos. Will go again.

Nice restaurant with a good selection of dishes and menu options. If you looking for nibbles or you want many courses, you will definitely find something mouthwatering. Staff is very friendly and the place has a good atmosphere.

One of my favourite places for a boozy lunch. The oysters are to die for - served with a sweet and tart raspberry dressing. Comforting, warming food, a fantastic selection of wines and fizz by the bottle or glass and friendly service make this a must-visit!

I had booked a table for 8pm for two and we knew there was to be a live jazz band playing which was great as I was looking for this anyway. Starters ordered were chicken liver parfait with oatcakes and prawn coctail. Both were very tasty. For mains my girlfriend had a white fish on a bed of greens and potatoes which was presented to the highest degree of care. I couldn't say the same for the roast beef salad main course - it looked like a simple side salad. I ate it though and I drank more to make up for my disappointment. Music was good.

Basement bar with a great atmosphere. Has various nooks and crannies which are excellent for groups. They are perhaps best described as "caves" lit by candle lanterns. There were 6 people in our group and we could have accommodated 10 comfortably, possibly 12 at a squeeze in our cave. There are also more traditional seating and bar - side seats. I can't comment on the prices as I was a guest. From what I observed the bar staff appeared to be friendly and helpful. Will certainly go back. Situated in Hope Street within a short walk from Princes Street.

I find myself spending evenings in here sipping tasty wines.

In a New Town basement so there is very limited cell phone reception. Great place to disconnect and wind down.

Upon request, the friendly staff make a cracking amaretto hot chocolate. As well as drinks and food, the coffee and tea selection is excellent.

If you are looking for somewhere to wind down or shelter from the rain in the West End, I would recommend this establishment.

Not impressed. Food ok but the service was awful! The staff were too involved in chatting with each other - should have been attentive to the patrons. Don't think it even deserves one s star

Always like Whighans but it's lost a bit of its bohemian flavour in recent years as the professionals and businessmen have taken over from the student set. Still great wines good food and fine setting.

This is a wine bar and restaurant in a cellar... sounds iffy but is really good. The local real ale was excellent and the establishment is dog friendly. We only had a drink but did look at the tapas menu and thought it was reasonably priced. There were 4 small annexe areas to the side which were like small rooms ideal for a small group of friends to enjoy and be private.

Food was good - the haggis croquettes were a highlight. We did however get served by 3 waiters/waitresses and they tried to bring or mains out before we'd received all our starters. I had a raw langoustine in my main which could have been disastrous. Overall great selection of wines and food was 4/5 star minus the dodge langoustine. Service was a bit variable, so room for improvement.

Nice atmosphere, on balance one of the best priced West end bar's in Edinburgh. I wouldn't consider it a sports bar but will have a TV/screen on for main stuff.... Can't comment on the food but I'm well informed it's very good.

A beautiful and atmospheric bar set in the basement of a great building. The dining area has an open and friendly feel to it, whilst the alcoves and sandstone (maybe?) walls provide a far more intimate environment completed by many candles. A good wine list with regular updates, grouped by country. Additionally some less common beers compliment their offerings at a reasonable price (compared to more famous bars on George St).
