Westmed ambulance is not the same as Bay Area Training Academy (BATA). BATA is the EMT training program and Westmed ambulance is the company that runs BATA and provides ambulance services. BATA is run well and Westmed not so much. Without BATA, westmed can t survive as they use the money from BATA to help run westmed. Ambulance rigs almost always break down without new rigs brought to replace them. Almost all of them are old with a bunchof miles. EMTs go through a short orientation that teach them basic gurney ops and driving, but EMTs are passwed out of training even if they can t lift and not taught more adanced gurney ops like how to position a gurney on an uneven angle or at an incline. This led to multiple patient drops mostly because of that person but also partley due to management for putting cripples and people who cant lift on shifts. One of the people I worked with was put on a shift with someone who couldn t lift and they dropped a patient so she got fired too. FTOs are given like $200 total for each trainee if they pass or not. They always get passed out by management even if when I as an FTO I say they aren t ready. EMTs are not taught what to do as required by law like when a 5150 psych patient runs away or other things they teach you at like AMR so EMTs are left to figure it out somehow. Westmed also skimps on gear for stocking ambulances if they even have them. The dispatch call center has an old system that freezes and breaks down a lot and management fo sure don t put money into getting new systems or computers. Basically it s a cheap company that doesn t spend money on the things that need fixing like rigs and the dispatch system and the like. They just put a bandaid on the problems and hope verything is okay if even that. The company also gives their own family members jobs and prefers them even if they aren t qualified or do their work well. No one really knows where the money goes because it domt really look like it going back into westmed. Almost like their not in touch with reality but hey, if you suck up eough to them or they think you did something good in their opinion, they ll give you a shout out via email to everyone on the email and give you some virtual dollarydoos to spend. You may or may not get the shift that you want so keep that in mind too On the plus sides, they have showers at station and increase their pay based on inflation which is good. I think starting is like $16 an hour but you can get anywhere from 0 to 3% increase in wage every 6 months based on performance. The people are all different and most of them make working at westmed a fun experience. If you compare westmed to other IFT companies in the bay area tho, they are definitely way better than some but not as good as others like Royal. It could be worse but work their for those minimum 6 months and then go 911 or switch. The calls you get at wetmed are also rarely dialysis calls so that s probably the coolest part Also watch out for Nikkie in management. She s like a 24/7 angry chihuahua who s ready to bite and will fire you if you just look at her wrong or say something she doesn t like whether that s in BATA or westmed but mostly BATA. She s fired people in tha past for like no reason at all just because they didn t do something that she wanted
Instructor Albright has done a great job running the schooling for West Med Ambulance. It is a fast paced, 7 week course that is filled with amazing knowledge both hands on and in class studies. Very appreciative for this program and i can't wait to get out there in the real world!
