Amazing facilities infested by crabs: one has a feeling of awe when walking through this branch of the YMCA. There may be more room between the floor and the ceiling than between walls. The place is very well-maintained. Some narrow spaces.

I would give it 4.5 Stars if it weren't for many of the people who work and work out there. Maybe it's a Massachusetts thing, but I have never felt more unwelcomed at a Y. Many of the young women who work at the front seem to have permanent sneers affixed.

People are treated like they are impositions even by fellow y members. It would be great if management reaffirmed a commitment to openness and friendliness.

So I've been a member for a whole 2 days, so take my review for what you will. The staff is extremely helpful/friendly. Every aspect seems well maintained, they also just re-did the whole basketball court the lady giving us a tour said they did not just sand, but ripped the whole thing up and put in a whole new one.

And the main reason I am doing this review so early is to vouch for a clean pool! There was another review that said it was filthy, and I am a swimmer, so that is important to me, so I almost did not sign up. However, at least their large pool is sparkling! I have not been in the small pool yet so I can't speak for that. They also have a strict must wear swim cap policy at all times, so no hairs in there either.

So, basically with my vast 2 whole days of knowledge, stop debating... just do it! If the debate is money, the prices are awesome, and/or they offer financial aid! So yeah, see you there!

I LOVE the Y! It has a wonderful laidback atmosphere where all sorts of people are represented. There are lots of classes, exercise machines, 2 pools, a squash/racketball court as well as other things.

The West Suburban YMCA is one of the cornerstones of the Newton community. Beautiful facility with state of the art equipment, brilliant staff, two fabulous pools. Every time I have a client moving to Newton, I recommend they join the West Suburban YMCA.

The facilities are on par for a public gym. The pool is relatively clean although it could be a bit cleaner, and there is some gunk on the bottom at the deep end which has been there for ages. The schedule for the pool isn't always accurate, which is frustrating. It's been twice now that the pool has closed early while I was swimming due to water polo. If there are any decent gyms approximately the same distance from you, I'd go there instead. I regret buying a subscription, and won't be renewing it.

We are thrilled with the West Suburban YMCA (just off the Pike in Newton)! We use it for swimming lessons for the kids, summer camps (Pikati, Chickami, and Frank A. Day), Live Y'ers afterschool care, and exercising (treadmills, Zumba classes, and weight circuit training). It really has something for our whole family.

While my daughter is taking swim lessons, I can read a book from the pool observation deck and watch her (without distracting the class). Or, I can hop on the treadmill and watch a TV show on my individual TV (bring a headset). Great way to get in exercise without taking time away from spending it with my kids.

Our family has been using the Y every since we moved to MA five years ago. To me, the staff are like family.

The Y not only offers diverse and numerous choices for group exercise classes each day. The teachers are excellent in their area of expertise and create a positive, encouraging environment. I love the Y not only for the chance to live healthy and strong, but also for the community spirit it provides.

The summer camp is horrible. It's not well organized and staff keep changing. My daughter lost her towel, swimsuit, cup and lunch box within two weeks. Some of the items were lost in the morning even before they were taken out so it's not like she misplaced them after use. No dedicated lost and found at all. If you are considering a summer camp for your child, find a school or daycare!

We have been members of that Y for a total of 4 years. Facilities are sub-par in cleanliness, especially changing rooms and toilets. Activities are limited, so no indoor or outdoor tennis, for example. But we still used it for swim lessons for the children.
Management and leadership were defensive and not responsive to parents' concerns. When the swim coach, Christina, treated our children differentially with no explanation of why their treatment was severe and different from other children, and with no apologies if this was a mistake because the coach had "a bad day" following a personal loss that she took on our children (instead of being professional and taking some time off to recover and clear her head so she can perform her job well upon her return), speaking with Aquatic director, Amanda, or with the director of members' services, Cara, was completely useless with promises for the future from them and not the coach and still no explanation, apology or guarantees that stated coach will not be unfair to our children again, a reflection on their very poor and ineffective leadership and customer service. Allowing a coach to discriminate against children for whatever reason other than their performance or a pre-stated policy is shameful.

Excellent facilities and staff. I've been going there at least 3-4 times a week for 8+ months now and while it originally appeared a bit outdated, I've had no issues using their equipment or finding time to go at less-crowded hours.

Love this place! Getting a family membership has been a game changer for us. An impressive array of classes (my favorite is spinning at 6:30pm with Missy), great pool facilities and swim classes, and AWESOME childcare (literally go in almost every day just for this). The staff have been really friendly and helpful. Such a great deal. So glad our friends introduced us to this location!

Fantastic family friendly gym with good options for gym classes & childcare for young ones.
I especially enjoy the dance & keeping fit class for older adults & the instructor Jill who inspires our parents to get up & dance while learning many different styles of dance.

The Y reaches out to young adults with disabilities & brings them in as volunteers & I enjoy interacting with them.

Special shout out to
Kelly, Justin, Krissy & Tyler - reception
Samantha - membership
April & Ivan - Trainer
Raymond - track coach
