I am professor emeritus at Western Carolina University and taught there for over 30 years. WCU is ranked in the top 16 state universities in the Southeast by U. S. News and World Report. WCU deserves this top rankling and has had a major educational impact and is a campus of destination as a top place to study.

Really good place to send your kid.. Whether it's considering price, professors or a place to stay. I was just a little concerned about the location and how far it was for most places.

Excellent school. They offer so much and the important topic of cost is great with WCU. They did an excellent job with their open house. After looking at 3 other in state schools my daughter has selected to become a Catamount at WCU. This is great place and the size and location could not be better. They are a close community organization that will allow incoming freshman to be relaxed. Great Job WCU

Wonderful school. Perfect size. Approachable professors and advisors. Very pro-student. Their summer Academic Success Program for incoming freshman is outstanding.
It was my best study abroad university of all time. I love this school. The atmosphere was clean and pure around the campus. It wasn't too large to navigate all around the university field. People are very friendly and really helpful. You will never say the word regret if you wish to apply to study here at WCU.
First and foremost, you will not find a more beautiful campus and natural surrounding than Cullowhee USA! I was a University of Georgia transfer to Western Carolina as a student-athlete and a University of South Carolina intern. After visiting Western, I found a reason to want to continue my education as well as my athletic endeavors. It is true that like many schools, student involvement was difficult at that time due to an athletic program that was struggling overall. There was always a struggle to get students and alumni involved in the athletic program during those years. But as soon as a winning tradition began in other athletics such as men's/women's Track & Field, women's soccer, men's basketball, our tested baseball team as well as ladies softball team, enthusiasm has picked up at WCU over the past couple of decades! Our band has marched in the Rose Bowl parade and the Macy's Thanksgiving Day parade while consistently mentioned amongst some of the better collegiate bands in all the country. As we all know that college is about learning and indeed about educating ourselves to become highly productive citizens in our society, our extra curricular activities are how we're marketed most effectively. We have always been recognized as a highly noticeable academic institution throughout prominent magazines across the US for years. We have also been recognized as an economical choice for a quality education compared to other universities our size and scope. If you desire to go to a place where you're not just a number but treated as a student by all of your professors, then Western is for you. No school will ever be perfect but this is by far the best one that I've experienced. As long as I have breath, the Whee and Tuckasegee Valley will always be my home away from home. It simply "draws" you back! Go Cats!
Best years of my life (1988-1992). UPDATE 8/11/2016- the terrible State Legislature in Raleigh has, in my view, put this fine institution on the path of mediocrity or worse, destruction, with this new low tuition rate. This will undiversify the population along socio-economic lines and maybe more. I strongly oppose the course and urge another solution: make all college education more affordable.
My heart will always hold a piece of Western Carolina. Catamount once and always.
Amazing institution and the site of so much self-transformation. I can't speak for the other programs at Western, but the School of Art + Design at WCU is truly exceptional. The faculty are so deeply devoted to the arts and their students. They both challenge and nurture the greatest qualities of their students and create an artistic community that is sincere and unique. I graduated back in 2016 and from what I've heard, WCUSA+D has thrived. If you are serious about involving yourself in the arts (and want the biggest bang for your buck) do yourself a favor and see what they have to offer.

Staff was exceptional. The price for a year is great. The campus is beautiful and everything is in walking distance. I am not talking about walking miles and miles. Its really close by to most everything.
TRASH!! They will screw you over financially and then screw you over more right before school starts. Just like any other college they care about money over you.
