I've gotten two dogs from here and one of them was for veterans on a special day and I got him for free. It was a great day for me. I recommend Humane Society of Southwest Washington to everyone. They not only help you get a dog they will take a dog back if you cannot keep him for whatever reason.

The HSSW is the best. Animals are treated like royalty. A stray animal is given the best veterinary care available. No animal is euthanized just because they haven t been adopted. Some animals stay until they are adopted. The staff and volunteers, as well as contributing individuals, are dedicated people who devote their time and money to ensure the animals are treated with love and dignity.

I went to adopt an older lab, and questioned a cough he had. They said he had pulled against his leash. In 2 days after adoption he was lethargic, coughing, snotty green secretions from his nose, moaning from fever. At the emergency vet they found 104 temp, and pneumonia. $3170.00 later I'm trying to get ahold of the HSSW and no one will call me back. Did they really get him medical attention when he was with them? Are all their animals lacking veterinary help and advice? As much as I love all animals, I would not adopt through HSSW again.

Adopted my wonderful dog here over a year ago. So thankful to have this shelter in our community, where dogs and cats are safe and cared for while waiting for adoption! Nice facilities, friendly staff and volunteers.

Carry people and very clean and organized. We have been going for years. Also adopted 2 cats and 1 dog from there. I did have one problem from one person. A larger blonde lady at the front desk. There was a puppy chewing the metal gate in her cage. I've seen where dogs loose their teeth or grind them down by doing this. I offered to buy a chew toy from the gift shop or go buy the dog a differnt toy, she told us NO! I asked her to contact someone to take care of the dog and she blew us off. I was ticked, so I walked around to the cat area and I talked to the vet. She asked us to show her what dog, so we did. She took care of the problem. The bigger blonde lady might have showed a little care. Ihpe she wasn't a paid clerk.
Oh, buy the way I just dropped off 8 bags of dog food and over 60 cans of cat food. I really care about animals. I've been dropping chew toys for years to help elevate this problem. When someone acts like this they may want to take a break from volunteering

We got our 7-year-old Chihuahua Cinder here. She has made a home in our house as well as our hearts. The people here really care for the animals and try their best to match each one with their forever homes.

Not sure what is going on but I don't think it's necessary for dogs to be 300 dollars and sometimes even more. Some of the staff have huge hearts and others only have hearts for animals so talking to people with kindness can be a real challenge for them. I understand there are fees for services they offer each dog. I also know they get a huge majority of food donated to them as I worked for a company that delivered quality dog food to them. And the main point is that I had a horrible adoption story with this specific branch and it was the staff that let me down.

Came into SW Washington humane society to put my 20 year old kitty, coley down because she s had a very long healthy good life. The staff were very friendly and practiced social distancing well. I did have to wait an extra while because apparently the staff who was doing the euthanasia were in a meeting. I wanted to say my goodbyes and get the heck out a there but ended up sitting and waiting for awhile. Oh well, more time with my cat. Anyways, I hope they keep up the good work and stay friendly.

Such a sad place to visit.
Brought me to tears because of those who have to put down their best friends and those who have to surrender for whatever reasons.

I brought a dog in who needed extra veterinary services. I found the poor pooch in the pouring winter rain, she was so weak from starvation and her eyes were so bad I thought I had hit her with my car. I had her groomed and took her to a vet but could not afford her medical needs. I brought her in after three weeks and documented as many details about her as possible. I checked on her daily and most times the employees gave me comforting information about her well-being. The vets gave medicine for her mild yeast infection and they treated her eyes. One week later she was adopted. I felt sad but not guilty about bringing her in because they tended to her, gave her walks, cuddles and play time, and they found a loving and responsible owner for her. It's probably not ideal like my experience all the time, but I am confident opinion that they will do their best. I think it's good to keep in touch if there are concerns.

We just got our second dog from SW Washington Humane society, and she is such a "joy" (her name upon adoption). We were thrilled with how loving the staff was with our new puppy, but also with our other dog, which they let us bring in so we could make the two dogs would get along. Our new puppy was well cared for during her short shelter stay, and the staff was professional and supportive. Thanks to the team for helping us find our new furry family member!

Unfortunately sends out animals with illnesses like respritory infections, mites, and fleas. I understand how these conditions are hard to prevent but the vet definitely took the animal I adopted off medication weeks too early, causing a bit out of pocket. Wonderful animals though and great selection. Great people.

I had to surrender my German Sheperd because of my health and financial situation as a retired person and it could have been a really horrible experience but I was helped by a young women named Kristen Starr who went beyond kindness and compassion to comfort and assure me the dog would get a great home!
Kristen is a wonderful example of how caring and kind This Shelters Employees are!
The dog was adopted in 24 hours and I have to say Kristen was the best Humane Society Helper I have ever encountered in my years of adopting pets !
Thank you so much for your help Kristen!
You get my highest rating ever as a human!

Went out to have my 14 year old dog put to sleep since I have little money they told me one price on phone then another when I got there...the 2 PEOPLE at the surrender desk were very rude and NO COMPASSIONATE at all...said I could NOT go with her while doing procedures...said room was to small...blah blah. Just wondering why really...do they use inferior process...need to teach your employees how to be more kind and compassionate to people in that situation...very disappointed in the place...RUDE PEOPLE UNCOMPENSATE.. I was just thete yesterday at 1 in afternoon .

Had a quick experience! Applied on the 12th, got a call regarding the dog I had applied for on the 13th, left with my new sweet babe in toe on the 15th! The process was painless and I feel assured that my boy is chipped, UTD on vaccines and neutered. I love him so much! Thank you!

The price for puppies is on par with backyard breeders, 600 for a possible mini dachshund mix? Outrageous prices, outrageous instructions for adopting "popular breed" puppies. Look elsewhere.

I have been on the hunt for the perfect dog for about two months and the staff was very patient in letting me come in several times and meet and play with a handful of dogs until I found the perfect one. They were very informative and I pick up my lovely girl tomorrow at 5. Highly recommend this shelter!

This is my happy place. I have been to several animal shelters all over the country, and HSSW does a fantastic job. The staff is committed and their volunteers are passionate. Try to resist the faces of their residents - dogs or kitties - I dare you.

I really wanted to give this place 5 stars but their volunteer foster program is disorganized. I attended their orientation, filled out forms, called and wrote emails. It s been over a month and they still haven t gotten back to me. Regarding the facility, it seems very nice and hopefully they have a smooth running adoption process - I just wish they would take communication more seriously.

They have a great pre-adoption service for kittens...

They have a great pre-adoption service for kittens and puppies that are below adoption age that lets you attend meet and greets with the goal of adoption. If you connect with a kitten or puppy and you submit an adoption form for that animal before anyone else does you can effectively reserve that animal while it finishes going through fostering and you then pick up your new pet on the assigned day. Usually once the animal reaches 8 weeks of age or after their spay/neuter. Whichever comes first.
It can be competitive since it's first come first serve. So you might not get the animal you have your heart set on.
The rest of the services are pretty standard. Dog and cat kennels, and I also saw a few rabbits off to the side. Their customer service is very thorough with the adoption process. They talk you through different steps and information about your pets needs and make sure you're prepared and will answer any questions you may have. They can be bit short with you since they are short staffed and go through dozens of people and pets a day.

The staff is very nice. I found an elderly, abandoned Chihuahua, and they made every accommodation to get him intaked and taken care of. Also, they are very close to No-Kill, animals are with them until adopted, unless they are irreparably aggressive/violent and a threat to people or beyond medical treatment.

I just read the story about Hunter the dog that ran away when the fire fighter was away fighting a fire. Stop giving the Humane Society the bad rating. They have a difficult job and do the best they can with an overwhelming influx of animals. After reading the story it is clear they did everything they were supposed to do. If you need to blame someone, blame the person who the dog was left with. If that person made any kind of effort to find the dog after he ran away this would not have happened (I hope we don't find out later the dog was left alone). Blame the family who has the dog now. How could they in good conscience keep the dog after knowing what happened?

I haven't been inside the shelter yet, and I probably don't need to because I have two cats who don't play well with others. I have dropped off donations twice now. The lady that mans the donation trailer is awesome. I forgot (for the second time now) to ask if she is a volunteer or an employee, but she is friendly and helpful and a real joy to talk to.

We went in just to "look" around. I was surprised at how the odor was minimal and the animals were looking as good as they could. Everytime we passed this one cage, a little chihuahua would come to to the front of it. Well, when my mom passed by. Binky is into her second year with us and we couldn't be more happy with her. She trained easily and although still a bit shy, she shows us alot of love every day. She still won't walk on a leash, but that's ok. She loves to go and has her own special "ride" for the walking part! We've done dental on her and pulled 16 teeth! Whatever she needs, she will get! Thank you!

Had to leave a kitten here, who was lost. I hope they find her a good home, or her family. Being so adorable & healthy, I'm sure she'll be claimed, or placed in a good home quickly. I'm at my max allowed pets in my apartment, or I would have kept her. Social. Receptive to commands, and smart. Very low maintenance. A good kitten for people with no/little experience with cats

If they don't find her parents, this little sweetheart is going to be put on the adoption floor in 72 hours. That's March 24th, 2019, at the Vancouver, WA location. She's very loving, purry, cuddly, potty trained, and good with other cats. A definite keeper.

Yes, I know this is a review for the Animal Shelter, not a platform for me to get this kitten adopted... But I highly recommend both.

The staff were very kind, quick, and professional. If you can, please donate to the Humane Society, or adopt a pet in need. Please spay & neuter your pets.
