Vision To Learn is a non-profit organization that provides free eye exams and eyeglasses to elementary school students in low-income communities. The organization was founded in 2012 by Austin Beutner, who saw firsthand the impact of poor vision on children's education while serving as the Deputy Mayor of Los Angeles. Since then, Vision To Learn has expanded its services to multiple states across the United States, providing access to vision care for thousands of children who would otherwise go without.
The mission of Vision To Learn is simple yet powerful: to ensure that every child has access to the glasses they need to succeed in school and life. According to research, one out of every four children has an undiagnosed vision problem that can affect their ability to learn. For low-income families, getting an eye exam and purchasing glasses can be a financial burden that they cannot afford. This is where Vision To Learn steps in - by providing free eye exams and glasses directly at schools.
The process starts with identifying schools with high percentages of students from low-income families who are likely not receiving proper vision care due to financial constraints or lack of access. Once identified, Vision To Learn partners with these schools and sends its mobile clinics equipped with state-of-the-art equipment for comprehensive eye exams.
During these exams, licensed optometrists perform thorough assessments on each student's eyesight using advanced technology such as autorefractors and digital retinal cameras. These tools allow for accurate diagnoses even among young children who may not be able to read letters on a chart yet.
After diagnosis, students are given a choice from a wide selection of stylish frames provided by Vision To Learn's partner companies such as Nike or Ray-Ban. The glasses are then custom-made at no cost thanks to donations from individuals or corporate sponsors like Google or Delta Airlines.
