Unique place in the world.

The audio guides that can be rented at the ticket office must be improved: they do not have a hands-free connection!

Only about 30 kilometers from Rome, lies the ancient site with the villa of Hadrian (Adriana). It was the summer residence and the retirement seat of the Roman emperor Hadrian. It was built in the years 118 to 134 AD on an area of at least 125 hectares with buildings and green space. It was the largest and most elaborate palace complex ever built by a Roman emperor.
With the re-known in the 15th century, it gained importance for the development of horticultural art and gave inspiration for many a Baroque garden. Due to its size, it also looks more like an approximate "palace city" than a villa and is the best preserved Roman ruins of the Roman era. The architecture of the villa still reflects many facets of buildings and equipment that collected impressions of Hadrian during his extensive travels in the provinces of the Roman Empire, especially in Greece and Egypt.
At that time, Roman aristocrats outside the city had built mansions and recreational facilities, a type that found its absolute culmination with the construction of Hadrian's villa.
The enormous water needs of the villa, which had not only to feed the thermal baths and buildings, but also artificial water surfaces, nymphaea and ornamental fountains, was provided by underground hydraulic systems.
Architecturally Hadrian broke with the previous design of axial-frontal Roman preferences in monumental buildings. He was inspired by an architectural cosmos of a not edgy but multiform variety. In characteristic frequency the round is given
In the modern naming of the individual objects of the ruins, one oriented oneself on the late antique "Historia Augusta", the only comprehensive surviving source certificate. The "Historia Augusta", however, is considered an unreliable source, as it has strongly fluctuating and speculative assignments. However, more than reasonable hypotheses can not be deduced from the architectural remains. So not a little remains in the context of the unknown, not precisely assignable what the viewer should not be bothered, the ancient world retains some secrets.

Below all criticism

Below all criticism
A terrible waste of time
A remote hole, a nightmare ride, a long walk because there is no direct bus and no matching information, the signs are not true - we just made rondals.
When we got there, the price was full, and even the services were closed, not to mention something to drink - completely deserted except for the store at the entrance, where there was no drinking or toilet.
The villa is inside nothing - Rome near the Colosseum, and the Capitolium is more empty.
Waste of day and money !!!
Do not go !!!

Relatively easy to reach with a COTRAL bus or from Tivoli by train and then a local bus What you see takes you back to the second century and shows you what remains of a gigantic summer residence with baths, gardens and many buildings. With young children perhaps not that interesting, but otherwise recommended!

Beautiful, suggestive. You immerse yourself completely, in what can be defined now, the upper quarters of the ancient Roman empire. In a large area rediscover what could have been the comforts and "vices" of a great empire. A beautiful leap in time, until you return to the parking lot and everything ends.

Very cool place to walk around and take pictures. You can walk through the villa and ruins. There are signs with both Italian and English explanations of what you're looking at. When we went, there were hardly any people here. Makes for a nice day trip from Rome. Take the bus from Ponte Mamolo.

Wow. Ok this Hadrian really knew how to live. The scale and grandeur of his summer home is worth the visit. Easy to get to from Rome on public transit. Helped me understand the scale of privilege in for an emperor.

Entering Villa Adriana is a unique experience. Near the villa there is a parking even if you arrive also by transport. Personally I used the bus line that starts from the bridge Mammolo goes to Tivoli. The ride was long but quite comfortable. However, the stop for the villa adriana is not exactly near the entrance of the villa itself. In fact, it takes about 20 minutes to go up and down on foot along a road bordered by unattractive houses, without shade and not always well marked. The villa is beautiful. Audio guide recommended. The baths, the canopic, the maritime theater and all the buildings are on average well preserved and suggestive. To visit the entire villa you need a morning or afternoon. The best time is June or September when the weather is stable and the heat is still bearable. If you opt for very sunny months it can be useful to bring with you a hat, water and a little food to be enjoyed comfortably on the numerous benches. There are in fact no refreshment points if not a gazdebo of vending machines that in summer becomes a small oven. Too bad there were some areas not visited.

Villa Adriana is an evocative and almost magical place, which allows you to see closely the enormous contribution given by the Roman culture to history. Unfortunately, as happens for many similar places in Italy, it is in my opinion not adequately valued: to fully appreciate the complexity and beauty of the Villa it is absolutely essential to have a competent guide, but the archaeological park does not make available; to get one, you need to organize yourself. But this effort is absolutely rewarded by what you will see! I recommend, especially if you go in the summer, to start early in the morning (the park opens at 8.30) and bring hats, sunglasses, sunscreen and water (there are no fountains along the way)

Wonderful archaeological site, although not kept very well, it retains its charm intact. Council to review the episode of Ulysses on Villa Adriana (via youtube) before going or, even better, while visiting.

It's not just the place where you can inspire yourself to build your villa (provided you have a lot of money) but also to inspire you if you want to run a company or the world. Exudes knowledge from all bricks. Go there after reading the memoirs of Adriano (of Marguerite) and Seneca. Go there at dusk, when With a little imagination you can reconstruct the events in your mind, then the way will appear small to you.

It is not for everyone. If you like quiet natury places - you'd like it. If you are interested in Roman architecture - you'd love it. If you wanna learn something... meeeh? The place could have had a much more elaborate info display. But hey... Just read a bit in advance. It also doesn't have any decent place to eat within the park and nothing good next to it. So better bring your food along. Its also cheap and easy to get to the space. But make sure you ve got bus tickets to and from the Villa Adriana stop, because once the ticket office of the villa is closed - you may get locked out. You need to first go to the Tabacci store in town and get 2x1.30e bus tickets. You can find it if you take it right from the Tivoli railway station and go down the hill. The same road going further right will bring you to the small round-about square. It's messy, but there you can find bus #4 going to Villa Adriana stop. It's easy. It worths the effort. Reserve about 3h for the park itself. It's vast.

A vast ancient palace and park with fascinating stone witnesses, sculptures, spas, pools. Wonderful views up to Tivoli and down to the plain towards Rome and the sea. Emperor Hadrian has set this monumental symbol of Roman palace and spa culture, and we are grateful for it.

What say beautiful. A tip: visit after 17:00. The sun was no longer high. There was a light breeze and above all there was no one. We enjoyed it as if it were a park. Only we, two French and two Germans.

This place is most suitable for people who like ruins, because there is really preserved on a large scale what I did not see, every 10-15 people on the planet. Of course, everything remains not straight in details, but there is an opportunity to be like almost every meter of this impressive villa .. There are practically no fences !!!
You need 3 hours to get around all the places, there are shops all over the place, you can rest ... enjoy nature, so it's possible to spend the whole day!
At the entrance there is a small cafe, with drinks, snacks, panini. Also there are free toilets;)
The entrance fee is 10 + you can take an audio guide for 5 of deposit)

Superb Roman villa surrounded by a large park, I went with my family and we purchased the ticket also valid for the visit of Hercules Victor sanctuary, not far from there that is really worth visiting. We have also added the guide, a very prepared, courteous and kind girl who has accompanied us and tells the story and anecdotes of the most characteristic places of this wonderful villa. I really recommend it for those who are fond of ancient history, but also for the curious or for families who want to spend a different day than usual and enrich their culture. Inside the park there are benches on which it is possible to set up a picnic to relax in the shade of some majestic tree of the villa. Really a beautiful place !!!!
