It s ironic, I lost a lot of sleep when the hospital first told me that mom had to be transferred to Van Duyn Rehab & Nursing Center in Syracuse, NY.

Mom was not ready to go home yet, but medically, there is nothing that the hospital can do, except recommend sending her to a Rehab Center.

We've heard of the News about Van Duyn being investigated and considered as one of the worst Rehab/Nursing Centers in NY.

Everyone (and I mean everyone in my family & close friends) insisted NOT to take her there but I had no other choice because there were NO other rehab centers in Onondaga County that could take her in at that time. They will have to find another Rehab Center in other neighboring counties if I don't agree.

After talking to the doctor and social worker at the hospital, they both told me that I do have the right to refuse, protest, and file a grievance but most likely I will lose, and Medicare won't pay another extra day for her to stay in the hospital. If I refuse, the hospital will be happy to keep mom but most likely she will get billed $2000 a day until we can find another place for her to stay.

I hastily agreed because I did not have any other choice. I felt so defeated and so worried while driving on my way to Van Duyn Rehab Center that afternoon.

When we arrived, I was quite surprised how beautiful this facility is. It is very clean, modern, and looks like a resort hotel inside. They put her on the 7th floor where the window view was scenic and beautiful. Everyone I met there was so nice, cheerful, & very accommodating.

My cell phone kept ringing the first few days from department heads wanting to know what my mom wants to eat, verifying once again her medications, and how they can make her stay more pleasant, etc.

I am so pleased with the care my mom was getting from this facility. Their PT/OT programs and staffers are fantastic! The nurses and aides are quite responsive, very friendly, and best of all, they all seem to enjoy their job.

It may have been very bad before, but it is completely different now just based on my actual real-experience from this facility. Van Duyn has changed for the better and is the best Rehab Center in the world if you ask me for my honest opinion.

Keep it up Van Duyn! You re doing such an exceptionally fantastic job!!!

The good reviews are from the rehab floor that was redone and is well taken care of. Every other floor is disgusting and has roaches and my grandmother had to wait forever each time she had to go to the bathroom. Lots of times she had accidents because people wouldn t come soon enough or sometimes not at all. I am disgusted about the new articles that have come out about abuse however I am not surprised. I have come in contact with several extremely rude ones that I would not want taking care of me. I have seen one woman burn someone she had to feed with food and then when she wouldn t eat fast enough threw all her food away so she couldn t eat at all. That same poor woman died several days later and I m sure it was at least partially due to poor care.

I'm acutely aware of the articles recently written about Van Duyn and would like to offer a view into some of the excellence that the Nursing home provides.

I'm currently on the rehab floor of the center as a result of a severe injury. I needed wound care along with physical and occupational therapy. Prior to coming to Van Duyn I had spent 5 weeks in bed due to 7 operations on my arm. The result was a weakening of my legs to the extent that I was unable to stand or walk.

The rehab department quickly changed that. The rehab department at Van Duyn is not only excellent but they are also compassionate. I've spent the last 6 weeks getting back up on my feet and now I'm ready to go home after 6 weeks! My prognosis by a physician at the hospital was 6 months to forever. If you are willing to work it, they and the therapies will work with you. I'm proof.

So, with all the negative press, let's not forget that all nursing homes have issues. Let's not forget we are still in a pandemic and these workers have worked thru the worst of it and yet they still remain. There are good and excellent things happening at Van Duyn and what they offer the greater Syracuse community.

My mother was discharged from Van Duyn last week. She was there for 3.5 weeks. Overall we were very satisfied with the stay. Nursing and medical staff were very professional and knowledgeable. Discharge instructions and education went well for my wife and I so we could care for her in our home. She was not a fan of the food but she is back walking pain free and ready to come live with us.

Don t normally write reviews but my cousin is in this facility. He got transferred from Upstate hospital. I am terrified for his life here..neglect, abuse. My fear is I won t ever see him again.. due to no visitors allowed and the way he gets treated. I sent in a letter to get this place not only investigated but shut down. Please help my cousin, and other patients.

This... place calls themselves a "nursing home." DO NOT allow your loved ones to be admitted here. They are currently being investigated as of 9/14/21... again. To learn more, call the NYS Health Dept to complain. As I had to do 4 years ago. Nothing has changed. Even worse than then.

This is an edit of my original post made yesterday. The last four paragraphs are new. These are areas I neglected which I meant to address in my original post.

My name is Frank Brown and I ve called Van Duyn home since October 16, 2020. I ve been extremely vocal since my stay here. Articles have appeared in print with my name and experiences which were less than flattering about Van Duyn. My experiences here have not always been the greatest. I would however like to publicly state the following:
After doing very intense research on Van Duyn and really digging into New York State Nursing Homes, I ve found we aren t as bad as many of the reviews state. I ve literally made hundreds of phone calls and spent way more hours researching Nursing Homes and healthcare in general than I could ever count.
I wholeheartedly believe with the recent changes in administration good things are happening here at Van Duyn.
Patricia, our fairly new Director of Operations is doing an excellent job. Patricia has been extremely helpful to me. She has gone above and beyond in my opinion. I ve talked to others that live here and I ve not heard one bad word about her.
Haily our recently appointed Assistant Administrator is doing an awesome job in her position. Haily was our Director of Operations prior to her promotion. Haily has done things to help me that I never thought anyone in her position would ever do. She has actually got down on her hands and knees picking up my room.
I believe the administration is really trying to make our home better and positive things are happening. Slowly, as this is a very large facility and everything isn t going to happen overnight.
We have many caring and dedicated RNs, LPNs and CNAs. Also a few Resident Assistants as well. Not all, but many more that truly care about caring for the residents than those that don t.
I m not focusing on our history I m focusing on our future. I regret some of what I ve said and done since living here. I wish I d done more research on nursing homes in New York State before coming down so hard on Van Duyn.
I ve no intention of leaving Van Duyn. I truly believe it is going to become more than a one star facility as we currently are. In this review I ve given us three stars. I was going to go with two but after reading a few more articles on nursing homes I bumped us up one.
These are very trying times for all health care facilities. What they are going through is unprecedented. I feel in time Van Duyn is going to be a much better place. Currently I m extremely happy to be here. As I stated earlier I ve no intention of leaving here. I want to be a part of making Van Duyn awesome. I ve attached a few pictures of my room. It s currently a work in progress. Carol, our activities worker on my floor is also a wonderful person. She printed out the pictures on my picture wall and laminated them for me. I ve many more for her to do. Carol tries to stop by and see me every day. On Wednesdays we play bingo.

I d also like to mention a social worker named Ollie. Ollie was a great guy and helped me a great deal when no one else would. He s an extremely awesome dude to talk to and is a very caring person.

So many great things seem to be happening here and I m extremely elated for this. However I strongly feel compelled to mention our dietary department is a complete mess. I will not elaborate any further on this matter unless asked to do so by request in the owners response.

I m also compelled to publicly state that our call bell situation has improved 100%!! It s no longer the norm to wait hours for someone to answer. This past week times have been anywhere from 2-5 minutes. Most staff seems much more focused on our care.

I d also like to recognize an activities worker named April. Her office is right across from my room. April is a fairly new hire. She s been so friendly to me. She s always on the run, but makes time for a friendly good morning and a little pleasant conversation. She s also helped me out a couple of times when I couldn t find my phone and once when I needed a pen.
