The exhibits are thoughtful, respectful, and thought provoking. However, the museum seemed quite empty considering its size and could have been organized more effectively. That said, I think it's important that we memorialize and be mindful of genocide and modern genocidal practices, so it's well worth a visit if you're in DC.

Spent the most time here than anywhere else in D.C. The tour bring you to tears. It's so touching to see and experience the history of a holocaust. This is an exhibit that you become part of as you walk through!

Only give limited amounts of free tickets. Many schools go with a hundreds of kids at once. Impossible to get a ticket after that. Would rather have paid money and actually got to see the exhibits.

Absolutely worth a stop in if your in the area. Just make sure to give yourself enough time if you want to see it all. My dad and I were here for at least four or five hours and we had to rush through the last bit and definitely missed some things.

This is probably the best museum I've been to; it is objectively impressive. The level of detail is very incredible and you leave with a much better understanding of the holocaust and WWII generally. I was concerned it would be very graphic, but especially graphic pictures are left out of plain sight.Dr

A great place to take the family. It won't be a fun time, but it's important that people continue to learn the history of the Holocaust so that it can be prevented on the future. This museum tells the history well.

They have done a fantastic job displaying the tragedy from its start to horrific finish. Also shows the genocide that took place in Cambodia. So much info. You go in smiling but leave deep in thought. Never Forget.

Utterly overwhelming. I think that it is an important place for those who need an education on the Holocaust. I think it's also good for people who have done their reading just to see the artifacts. The Hall of Remembrance was hard to take in its starkness. I was grateful that they spent time discussing the "Holocaust by Bullets," since that is an often-overlooked part of the horror that was The Holocaust. I'm also grateful that the designers had the good sense and taste to put the cafe in a separate building.

They admit people up till their closing time, but they close all the exhibits 30 minutes before they close. Moral of my visit: Don't come close to closing time or they will just waste your time.

This museum was very nice, clean and informational. We really enjoyed it! Recommend going if you have a good amount of time. It s a lot of reading. Only reason it didn t get five stars is because it was so crowded that people were grouped up banging into each other trying to see everything. Wish it had better line/crowd control. Security was great at the front door and very organized but not so much in where the exhibits were. Every time we tried to read something another person would just walk right in front of us so we did what we could. Glad it was free because if we paid to get in I d be pretty annoyed. They did an excellent job with this museum and I did learn a lot so definitely check it out!

The way they put this together is amazing and you can almost feel the pain of the people during this time, the experience is not for the light hearted I almost was overwhelmed by the acts the Nazis did during this time and the exhibits that showed it. The exhibits are very well designed and it is a timeline that you walk through, they even give you a passport of a person who lived through that horrible time and you read their experience as you go through. The overall experience is emotionally overwhelming, I would recommend going though just to see the struggles the people went through. One of the tour guides actually was one of the kids who actually survived the holocaust and me and my class got her as a tour guide, that was an awesome experience. I would recommend visiting and want to go again.

When I was a kid I went to Dauchau in Germany, so I knew what to expect at the United States Holocaust Museum. Try and find time to see this museum, it's worth the trip. The lines are long because it's a popular Museum. One of the more popular museums in Washington DC. Some of the images can be quite traumatic, be prepared to wipe away tears.

The volunteers were not too fond of JW s? That s what I gathered when I asked information about JW s. JW s suffered as much as Jewish people, yet not recognized nearly as much. Also, how could the museum be SELLING videos published by the Watchtower, which are obtained AT NO COST from the Kingdom Hall or downloaded AT NO COST using JW Library or JW Broadcasting? Awkward!

A short distance away from the main ensemble Smith...

A short distance away from the main ensemble Smithsonian museums should not really perceptible building. Suddenly his door hides one of the most exciting museums that you can visit in Washington - the Holocaust Museum. Once inside, you come across two filing cabinets with the signatures of "Men" and women "Random Card, which you take with you -.. This is a story of one of the ordinary people, has got into the millstone of the Nazi death machine With it you have to go through the entire museum, which is conceptually designed so that a consistent and non-judgmental in front of your eyes reveals the history of the Holocaust as annihilation technology (a deliberately neutral tone of the narrative leaves you alone with the need to draw conclusions on what they see). it all starts with ogro many metal elevator that carries you to a screeching at the top floor with the top floor you have a long way down, and the lower -. the more clearly emerges the depth of the abyss into which humanity has slipped in the middle of the XX century.
Exposure originates with the racial theories of the Third Reich.
We will be guided through all the stages of segregation, simultaneously showing, for example, calculating machine designed by IBM specifically to automate the process of Jews.
We will go through the key milestones of the social culture of hatred of the Jews, and the details will show us a vivid example of its manifestations - the consequences of Kristallnacht.
We will reveal the main stages of design of public policies against the Jewish population, until the moment when Hitler try on the image of the prophet and announced the beginning of operation "Final solution".
From here we will walk in the footsteps of a random person, a personal card which we took from the filing at the entrance to the museum. Through the ghetto through the wagons for transport to the camp, which hangs above the gate rock inscription "Arbeit macht frei". The railroad takes us to the awesome fence of the Auschwitz-Birkenau 2, and we find ourselves in his cramped barracks.
In one of the sanitary days we will know for yourself affects the action of the gas "Zyklon B".
And then - darkness and furnace uninterrupted column of black smoke into the clear sky ...
Witnesses of this story - the silent shoes, spectacles, tons of hidden in bags marked with the hair, which can then be allowed to tailoring.
On the ground floor, just before leaving the museum, the famous and, unfortunately, still sometimes the actual inscription:
"When they came for the communists, I remained silent - I was not a Communist.
When they came for the social democrats, I remained silent - I was not a social democrat.
When they came for the trade unionists, I did not speak - I was not a trade unionist.
When they came for me - there was no one left to stand up for me. "
P.S. On the last page of the personal card of Polish Jews, which I left the museum, the story breaks off with "Missing".

One of the best museums in DC!

One of the best museums in DC!

The only reason I didn't give it 5 stars is because of the sheer number of people they let in makes it really, really hard to take your time and really take in the museum.

I had been the year it opened but was going to be back in DC and decided to so see it again. I was happy when I went to their website and noticed that they recommended getting tickets prior to your visit (they are free, unless you order online, then they are $1 each). I figured they finally realized the popularity of the museum and by requiring tickets, everyone would be able to get through the museum and see it all. That's not the case. It was still horribly crowded and that made it hard to see everything.

That aside, the museum itself is incredible and worth the visit. If you are looking for one or two things to see while in DC, don't miss this one! It's very powerful and important and you feel that throughout the museum.
