A well-known grocery store coordinates with the United Way for a bi-annual shakedown of customers. They need to re-evaluate their relationship with this charity. I do not need to be asked if i want to donate $2 or $3.

Is there anyone there to answer or respond? I call and the phone just rings and rings. No one answers.

If you work in the public sector in WNY, you'll be shaken-down each Fall by this plodding, bloated bureaucracy.

The United Way engages in charity-shaming. They print your name and address on a donation commitment envelope, which is then hand-delivered to you in the workplace by your supervisor, who reminds you to return it to him/her. I played this game for awhile * but now the envelope goes directly into the shredder. When my supervisor asks where the donation envelope is, I simply reply that I took care of it.

*The President of the United Way (for 20 years), Mr. William Aramony spent six years in a federal prison after he was convicted in 1995 on 23 counts of felony charges, including conspiracy, fraud and filing false tax returns.
Revelations that he used United Way funds to pay for extramarital affairs including a dalliance he began with a teenager soon after she graduated high school .

For many of my co-workers, this was enough for us to collectively pledge never to give another dime to the United Way. I have no doubt that the United Way does good in the community, but the small amount of money doled out is nothing in comparison to their grossly excessive operating expenses. That, coupled with a corporate President who was flying around in a private jet banging a 17 year old is enough to turn my stomach.
