Union Academy Charter School is the best school in NC. My kids love everything about the school. The teachers, staff, and administration are supportive and genuinely care for the students. I couldn't ask for better school.

There are many reasons why this school has earned a 1 Star in my opinion. There are reasons why there are other 1 Stars in these reviews. I was a student here for 10+ years. I never caused trouble or was disruptive; I always followed the rules. While there were/are teachers who were truly good, truly kind and truly caring, there were many others who were/are not. Although this is called a character school, I must ask, where is the character? Bullying was/is a huge issue for some. Some were bullied so much they left the school, others were driven into depression. While bullying is a problem at every school, it is also an issue here that is brushed under the rug. Children of staff are prioritized. Students who have been in trouble before are permanently labeled as trouble makers for their entirety of their time here. Certain students are repeatedly written up for dress code violations while others never are. Cliques are a problem, among students and staff. Most importantly, rules are absolutely NOT applied equally to everyone. They were not when I went there, and they still are not.
While UA has tremendous issues that are only getting progressively worse, there are a few positives. For one, there is a not a massive drug or violence problem here, as of now. Many other schools are less safe, so UA earns a point for physical safety. Having the students do community service is a wonderful thing. Also, the English department does prepare their students well for college (in terms of writing essays, citing information, preparing presentations, etc). And lastly, there are some good, qualified teachers among the many who are not. I had some teachers that I truly enjoyed, learned from, received help from, and looked up to. They stand out apart from the rest.
UA needs serious work. The way that it was run in it s early years was stellar. Staff wanted the best for the students, they truly enjoyed their jobs, students were treated much more equally/fairly. But now, the smallest, minute issues are blown out of proportion. Even when I attended this school, I was pushed around by certain staff members who were utterly two faced, behaving one way towards certain students and a completely different way around others and those over them. More qualified staff needs to be hired, more focus on building character for all students/staff needs to be emphasized (rather than the tearing down of character), more intervention by staff and other students when witnessing bullying, more understanding and compassion for families and students who are working and cannot volunteer for many events to get the hours desired because they simply do not have the time, and overall, an emphasis on the whole do the right thing even when no one is looking . UA needs to start doing the right thing.

Great school! Warm, friendly & inviting atmosphere. UA doesn't just teach THE TEST like most all other schools. They actually teach the children and care about each student, with the understanding that every child doesn't learn the same.

School staff have gone out of their way to help us resolve every situation that we have come across. Variety of classes and extracurricular programs is well worth the extra effort required to get into the Charter School Program.

this is the best school I have even been to and I never want to quit the school. The 1 negative is that every year us students have to write letters begging for people to donate money to UA.

As they had said, in this school the teachers love to teaching.
When your kid said that, for a parents means a lot. Love UA.

Politically correct, uninterested in what is moral, paid for by special interests. If you care about your children, don't send them to this school. I'm glad for one that the old headmaster was recently fired.

I graduated from here in 2015. This school is a joke. They fire tons of teachers and staff every year to pay new people way less. They are always begging everyone and their uncle's third cousin for money. Its all about the money. They couldn't care less that they are giving you're children the most underqualified teachers they can find. FUN FACT: The old principal of this school didnt even have a qualified degree to be a principal. Neither did her husband that was over the athletic department. Never learned anything useful for the real world. (Just like any other High School)

This school is absolutely terrible, I currently go here and have personally seen how this school has went from bad to worse, administrators and other staff/ teachers paint this beautiful picture of this school when they know its not true. Children of staff members are let off the hook for anything they do, but the moment a non staff kid does the same thing, its iss/oss ect. Favoritism is a big problem at this school, this school only cares for the majority of students that want to go to college, other students that want to go to a trade school or the military are shoved to the side and forgotten, school counselors here push students to apply for colleges and they never ever mention going to a trade or going into the military, it's almost like the school hates it. Also, the school makes students write letters to companies begging for money, we have done this year after year and nearly nothing has changed. It's not the student's jobs to do your begging, it's not our fault that this school can't learn to keep great teachers for more than a year, it's not our fault that this school cant run properly.

My kids have been at UA for the past 9 years and I would never let them move to another school. I expect them to graduate from UA with a great education, slightly above their area peers. Every school has its ups and downs, but the core of UA's charter, character education, is essential to UA's success stories. Additionally, the great teachers outweigh the poor ones (which exist at every school).

I'm a student at Union Academy. I am only giving it a one start rating because the curriculum is overall pretty bad, the student there just love to bully and pick on others, and the whole character thing is a lie.

The staff is a perfect example of cronyism to the T. There's so many people hired because they are related to someone. There's a quote where new students must find the "UA way" but student cliques can be very exclusive that those new students can never know the UA way so to speak. You can't have different opinions without being attacked. Some of the best teachers to step foot in the school are so repulsed by the way the school is run that they only stay as long as their contract allows, or they speak up and are suddenly gone. Many teachers that I have talked to outside of the school setting are afraid to say anything because of fear they may lose their job, and that UA is the only place they can work. My experience was anything but stellar. I experienced so much prejudice because I spoke out about the issues that the school had, it's corrupt from the inside out. I could go on for another few paragraphs about the things that are wrong, but it's honestly too much.

This is a school well deserving of a 5 star review because the staff and the great opportunities offered at Union Academy place you in several postions to succeed. The staff truly care and encourage the students to achieve their future goals. They plan several fun events during school days to give the students more perspective and a break from typical school days. I had an amazing experience going here, I genuinely can't see my experience being better anywhere else. Those who have submitted 1 star reviews unfortunately did not see/utilize what Union Academy did for them and dwelled in the negatives, most uncontrollable. Trust me Union Academy is without question the best school in North Carolina.

Bow down before your holy patriarch... For his name is Red Rocket and he shall be known to all as our savior . He shall come forth to judge the academies and your character. Thou must improve thy character, for the Rocket judges all, leaving no one unseen.

We are so blessed to be a part of the UA family. This is our 3rd year and we could not be happier. I love the fact that there are so many options for parent involvement, volunteering, and more. The teachers, staff, and faculty are doing a fantastic job during this time, and are always there for answering questions and coming up with solutions!

All three of my kids graduated from Union Academy and it was an awesome experience for them. Union Academy is more than a school. It is a great family community. I've been involved with the school for the past 14 years, and it gets better every year. Great place to work.

Union Academy is not rich, it is not perfect; but Union Academy is what you make of it... just like life. I am forever grateful for the eleven years I spent here and I am extremely proud to call myself an alumni of a National School of Character.
