The Open Mic Under St. Marks is an authentic New York City art scene that happens Tuesday nights in a gritty (in the best sense of the word) basement theater, with a killer sound system and lighting design. It is the most unique, eclectic, raw, entertaining, balls-to-the-wall open mic I ve ever played (which says a lot), hosted by an incredible group of passionate, talented, dedicated artists through Frigid New York Theater Group. A safe and supportive space where I was so inspired and comfortable, my usual stage fright was non-existent by the time I got up to perform at 2:30am. Anything goes at this place. After witnessing thirty-four, bold yet vulnerable, (7-minute) acts before me (musicians, comedians, poets, storytellers, performance artists), I felt refreshingly free and fearless on stage. It was such a cool artistic experience. I recommend it to anyone looking for an open mic in NYC. Be forewarned, sign-ups are drawn from a hat. Even if you show up early, before 9PM like I did, time-slots are luck of the draw, so it may be a long night. Settle in for some one-of-a-kind entertainment. As the masters of ceremony claimed they would, the performances got more hardcore as the night evolved, and the beer flowed. "The diehards are all that are left in the end." This open mic is the real deal. When I woke up the morning after, I was still buzzing and grateful I made the decision to hang tough and perform. The feeling stayed with me throughout the day. Thanks for having me! xx Pineapple

Lovely little space in the city that promoted the indie and alternative theater scenes. If you didn't know it was here you would probably just walk right past it, which is honestly part of it's charm. It feels like the kind of NYC you used to hear about from the 80s that was more art and indie boutiques than commercial spaces like The Gap. A valuable little part of the artistic community.

A good experience seeing Maggie Nuttall's very funny solo show. It was part of the Frigid Fest, and I believe they provided the friendly and welcoming staff running things this eve, though I may be wrong.

Comfy, intimate black box theatre. The inconveniently located bathroom is my only complaint, though I realize that's not their fault, merely a by-product of the space, which kinda goes with the territory of off-off Bway theatre spaces in NYC. I could get to it when I needed to. Lovely evening of performance.

We went for the monthly Cabaret and it was very entertaining! It was odd, unforgettable, unique and left us asking ourselves "what just happened", and I can't wait to do it all over again.

I've attended shows at USM and I've produced shows there. Both experiences were awesome!! The theater has a cool grungy New York vibe and the bar has a great selection - not your typical Naragansett-or-nothing. The shows I've seen are usually pretty indie. When I produced, the theater was really helpful and supportive, and I was able to pay my rental fees with waitressing money. For me, this is one of the last real indie theaters

Your experience is going to vary depending on what you see here so I'll just rate the actual place. Funky little basement theatre in the LES which seats about 30 in what felt like recycled movie theatre seats. Small bar and tiny bathroom included. Easily the weirdest experience I've had since I moved here two years ago but I'm glad I went. Heat was not on that I could tell, I left my scarf and jacket on the entire time I was there...

The Bucket is a total scam, they insert their own people into the list. Waited 4 hours and still didnt get on stage. If you dont know people there, you will not get a spot on stage Some of the acts were good, most were just promoting themselves.
