I went on a weekday so not busy at all. Very visual exhibits, well done. Too bad I missed the tour but it looks like there are a couple a day. Good to check before you arrive. I parked in one the garages nearby. If you choose to park on the street, one good luck on finding one and two, it's a 1 hour meter.

Very interesting museum of history of transportation in New York. There are tons of historical pieces and machinery, everything with an explanation, and there are interactive exhibits for kids. Almost every part was interesting: the construction of the subway tunnels, the history of turnstiles and the historical subway cars. The museum was a bit too kid friendly for me (read: loud), but I enjoyed it nonetheless. One thing could be improved without a ton of work: the layout of the displays. First, the subway cars could benefit from chronological order (the information plaques sometimes refer to plaques on the other side of the platform). Second, the chronological displays should be consistently arranged: some displays went in chronological order in one direction, and then the display next to it would go in the other direction, making you walk up and down the same aisles multiple times.

I've always been a nerd for transit, especially trains, even though I've never really lived in a city with good train service. My most treasured travel souviners are the cards I buy for each city's metro.

This museum had me in awe the entire time. Even the "boring" part at the beginning with the old pictures and text about the men who built the built NYC's train system long ago was fascinating. For someone from the South in a right to work state, the labor history was especially interesting.

Later in the main floor, there are more dynamic exhibits from our contemporary era showing how the system is able to manage moments of crisis. I'm super fascinated by how the daily operations are handled in their ops center as someone who worked in a combat operations center overseas, but seeing how the MTA is able to react to all manner of crisises from terror to blackout to rain to snow? Absolutely amazing.

Obviously the lower level exhibit with period train cars is a big draw. It is like stepping into a time machine. What really impressed me, though, is the number of different cars from different periods. I thought there would be one or two token pieces... Boy was I pleasantly surprised.

Other than drink and eat, this is about all I did during my weekend in Brooklyn. Absolutely made it worth the trip.

If you ride subway trains as a regular part of your day, you may be interested to acquire first-hand knowledge of MTA history. This is an excellent jumping off point for that endeavor. Older trains, a collection of cartoons about the subway, and pics and vids about subway related disasters will kean your appetite.

It's a very fun place if you like or LOVE the MTA like me. It has all the trains from old to new and you can literally go into trains you haven't been in since you were 5. I had to add pictures of the inside of trains just so you and me can enjoy some of this experience from your screen. It's a very nice place.

This museum is fabulous. You can see samples of the different train cars and exhibits about how they built the subway system. It's inside an abandoned subway station making it an authentic feel when you enter as you have to walk down the stairs to the booth to pay. They have security and a cute gift shop. Parking is an issue here. Be prepared!

The best transit museum I've ever been to! My son is 5 years old, he adores trains and not only is this museum the perfect size (not to big or small) it's the real deal. The museum is inside an old unused subway, the tracks are still live, that's how real the place is. The trains, buses and trams are all open, so not only can you look at them, but you can also touch them, step inside them, take a seat and in some of the buses you can pretend to drive them! If you have a child in NYC and want to pass a few hours or even if you love trains, this is a must.

Another interesting spot for children in New York is the New York Transit Museum. Is a museum that displays historical artifacts of the New York City Subway , bus and commuter rail systems in the greater New York City metropolitan region. The museum is located in Downtown Brooklyn. You can go with children starting from 3 y.o. They have a lot of fun for at least one hour.

Kids love this place. There is something for everyone - thoughtful exhibits for adults & older kids looking to learn more; some interactive things for kids; and of course, the historic subway cars that you can board. It's a great rainy-day activity for NYC parents, and a unique destination for those visiting NYC.

Fascinating museum which was built in an old subway station. They have a bunch of subway cars from the early 1900 s all the way through modern day. They are actual subway cars, and you can go inside them. The museum also has a bunch of exhibits in everything from how the subway was constructed, to fare collection over the years, to the old streetcars which NYC used to have.

Please note that while there is a handicapped elevator to get into the underground museum, they do not allow strollers on it so you ll have to carry strollers down the stairs. Also, people in wheelchairs may have trouble boarding some of the subway car exhibits, as I not all of them are level with the platform.

I wanted to love this place, but it didn't really tie everything together enough for me, the collection is super cool, but it feels disconnected. It does seem like an amazing experience for children, and it's really cool that it's in an actual station, it just didn't amaze me as much as I had hoped, given that I'm gaga for mass transit.

Needs AC badly. Especially in the summer. Their toilets are as bad as a regular subway toilet. But otherwise the Old trains are really cool and full of great old advertisements. And the kids can drive the buses.

Super Cool! Loved walking in and out of the old train cars. Reading the history about tokens and counterfeits was great too. Would love to see a expanded section on the construction and expansion of the subway system.

This is one of the coolest places in New York City. Although a little far from the rest of the main attractions, I would highly recommend going here. The collection of trains in so cool to look at and there is always something new to explore. I think it's even more awesome that it is places underground in an old station that has since been taken out of service. The exhibits are usually great although I was not so much a fan of the map exhibit, but to each their own. I also want to give a shoutout to the office staff who helped me find an obscure piece from an old exhibit online.

My favorite museum in NY. Walk to the very end of the retro subway car platform and sit in the classic cars in silence, most people are too lazy to go that far. Also really interesting exhibits on the MTA during crisis times. Great info, I only wish it was larger !!

Just as much fun for adults as it is for kids.
Very interesting even if you arent into trains as it covers things that affect NY and delves into a lot of social and political issues.
Great to play on the old trains and see the vintage advertisements.
Quality gift shop, too.
Only accessible by stairs which kinda sucks for the disabled and stroller crew.

The collection of trains is worth the entry fee alone, especially as they come replete with the original advertisements. The history of the subway is really informative and well stocked with photos from yesteryear. Though we also enjoyed the comic book and artwork section too the overall curation could have been a bit better. Overall it's worth a visit but lacks the imagination and interactivity that a lot of other museums offer.

What a wonderful visit we had! Located in an old subway station, you can follow the whole journey to the construction of NYC transit system in the late 1800s/early 1900s to today, photos, videos... And then you can visit many of the old wagons and even ENTER! Wow!

One of the most underratted musuems in NYC. Housed in an old subway station, it shows the history of the MTA from streetcars to elevated railroads to the modern subway. The old subway platfrom is lined with historic subway railcars where visistors can walk thru and sit.

We love this place! My two year old and I love climbing in and out of the old subway cars and the fact that it s in an abandoned station makes it even cooler. The only hard part is getting him to leave without buying something at the gift shop.
