About Traill County Historical Society
The Traill County Historical Society is a non-profit organization that aims to preserve and promote the history of Traill County, North Dakota. Established in 1965, the society has grown to include seven different museum sites in Hillsboro, ND. The Plummer House was the first site acquired by the society and remains one of its most popular attractions.
The Plummer House is a historic home built in 1884 by George Plummer, a prominent businessman and politician in Hillsboro. The house was donated to the historical society by Plummer's granddaughter and has been restored to its original condition. Visitors can tour the house and learn about life in Hillsboro during the late 19th century.
In addition to the Plummer House, the Traill County Historical Society operates six other museum sites throughout Hillsboro. These include:
1. The Pioneer Museum - This museum features exhibits on early settlers of Traill County, including Native Americans and European immigrants.
2. The Military Museum - This museum showcases artifacts from various wars that have involved residents of Traill County.
3. The Agricultural Museum - This museum highlights farming equipment used throughout history in North Dakota.
4. The Schoolhouse Museum - This museum is housed in a one-room schoolhouse from 1906 and provides visitors with an authentic look at education during this time period.
5. The Depot Museum - This museum is located inside an old train depot from 1909 and displays items related to transportation history in North Dakota.
6. The Heritage Park - This outdoor park features several historic buildings that have been moved from their original locations throughout Traill County.
All of these museums are staffed by knowledgeable volunteers who are passionate about preserving local history for future generations to enjoy.
The Traill County Historical Society also hosts several events throughout the year, including an annual ice cream social at Heritage Park, a Christmas open house at each of its museums, and various educational programs for children and adults alike.
