About Tookany/Tacony-Frankford Watershed Partnership
The Tookany/Tacony-Frankford Watershed Partnership is a non-profit organization that aims to protect and improve the water quality of the Tookany/Tacony-Frankford watershed. This 30 square mile area is located in southeast Pennsylvania, both within and just outside the city of Philadelphia. The partnership was formed in 2000 by a group of concerned citizens who recognized the need for a coordinated effort to address the environmental challenges facing this important watershed.
The Tookany/Tacony-Frankford watershed is home to over one million people, making it one of the most densely populated watersheds in Pennsylvania. It encompasses parts of Montgomery, Bucks, and Philadelphia counties and includes several major tributaries such as Jenkintown Creek, Tookany Creek, Tacony Creek, Frankford Creek, and Poquessing Creek.
The partnership's mission is to promote stewardship of this vital resource through education, outreach programs, community engagement initiatives and restoration projects. They work closely with local government agencies such as Philadelphia Water Department (PWD), Montgomery County Conservation District (MCCD), Delaware River Basin Commission (DRBC) among others.
One of their primary goals is to reduce stormwater runoff which can cause erosion and pollution in streams leading into rivers like Delaware River or Schuylkill River. The partnership has implemented several green infrastructure projects throughout the watershed including rain gardens that capture stormwater runoff before it enters streams or rivers.
Another key initiative undertaken by the partnership involves monitoring water quality at various locations throughout the watershed. This data helps identify areas where pollution levels are high so that targeted remediation efforts can be implemented.
In addition to these efforts aimed at improving water quality within the watershed itself, The Partnership also works on educating residents about how they can help protect our environment through simple actions like reducing plastic waste or properly disposing hazardous materials like batteries or electronics.
Overall The Tookany/Tacony-Frankford Watershed Partnership plays an essential role in protecting this vital resource for future generations while also promoting sustainable development practices that benefit both people and nature alike. Their work serves as an excellent example for other communities looking to take action on environmental issues affecting their own watersheds.
