We did the full day Trekking to Hmong & Khmu Villa...
We did the full day Trekking to Hmong & Khmu Villages and then ended at Tad Sae waterfalls. We had Chanci as our guide, and he was wonderful.
It was an interesting experience as you kind of just go into these villages and walk around and then leave. There isn't the kind of, "let's all go see these random people who just showed up" that there is in other places I have been. I have mixed feelings about that part of the experience, as I felt almost like I was intruding. At the same time, it was kind of nice to see people just going about their daily lives. Our guide did a decent job of explaining some of the social and economic situation in the area, which was quite interesting. Luckily for us, we had been to TAEC before going on the trek, so had some background knowledge of the ethnic groups.
The one downside was that we were specifically looking to avoid elephant treks, but ended up at the starting point to one as it was at the same place our trek started. That was sad and disappointing, but also just alarming as I was standing feet away from an elephant without having expected to do so. While these elephants looked like they were treated at least decently (ones we saw elsewhere had chains around their necks, but these did not), it was still a little upsetting watching other tourists get on them to go for a ride through the forest.
On the plus side, the scenery was gorgeous, and we hiked through many different types of forest and plantations, from basically a tropical rainforest to bamboo forest to open fields. Our guide taught us about some of the things we were seeing along the way, like rubber and teak trees, which was cool. Chanci was also just a fun person to talk to, and everyone in our group had a good time. He was also very tolerant of us taking lots of photo and water breaks along the way.
After a quick ride in a boat down the Mekong, we went to the Tad Sae waterwalls. They were gorgeous, and were quite pleasant to dip your feet in after all that hiking. FYI, there are also elephants here.
Overall, really glad we did this as it certainly gave us a different perspective on Laos than we would have had otherwise. Also, thank you so much to Chanci for being such a great guide!
