More like "Thefty" Car Rental. I was in a bind trying to get a last minute (big mistake) car rental to get to work while mine is in the shop. I explained several times over the phone that I needed something fast and that I was cost sensitive and wanted something cheap. It is, after all, rather expensive to host Thanksgiving. This Dollar Rental/Thrifty Rental location quoted me a $45.00 total charge, so I grabbed a cab and headed over.
When I got there, after waiting around with nobody in sight for 5-10 minutes, and futilely calling out a few times to see if anybody was around in this two room building, an employee finally shows up. She was very nice but told me that they would actually be charging me $250, plus the rental, as apparently some sort of hold. I asked her when I would get my money back and she wouldn't commit to a date, citing transactional delay etc. It was clear to me I wouldn't see my money for another week. She offered to talk to her manager, who had apparently been sitting in the next room the entire time - he had just been ignoring me when I first walked in. After he mumbles something to her with his back turned to me, she came back and apologized profusely about "the policy". I asked why she said nothing about this over the phone when I explained I needed to know the cost and that I was cost sensitive and she continued to go on about their "policy". I explained that I could not put down another $250 unless I have some assurance that her fat little manager would pay me back immediately after returning their car. No promises. Interesting that they have no "policy" to actually return my money.
Bottom line: I took a cab to get here and they knew it. This was nothing more than extortion. These people are dishonest. I was very angry that they wasted my time, and frankly my money. There is nothing "thrifty" about them - nor are their prices, for that matter, any less than the local rates from Enterprise, Hertz, or the others. I opted to take a 45 minute cab ride with the certainty that my costs were contained rather than waste $295 on the hope that they would refund a substantial amount of that quickly.
Just for the fun of it I called several local rentals to get price quotes. Their prices were all the same, those that had security deposit policies said so over the phone (many were far less than Thefty), and they all had reciprocal policies promising to return money within a stated number of days. Do not go to Dollar/Thefty Car Rentals in Cranberry.
