Founded in 1847, IIT Roorkee is the seventh IIT institution to be established among the IIT group of institutions. The university campus is spread over an area of 25 acres. It also has another campus in Greater Noida which was opened in 2011. Presently, the university owns four departments.
IIT Roorkee was ranked 6 for engineering as per NIRF 2019.

Most students live in the hostels, where extracurricular activities complement the academic routine.

The campus has 16 hostels, of which two (Sarojini, Kasturba ) are occupied by girls.

Hostels may accommodate undergraduate and graduate students along with doctoral students.
Students are assigned to hostels by the school administration after their freshmen year.

There are nine hostels for married students, doctoral students and foreign students. Each bhawan has a mess.

Mess administration consists of a staff advisor, a chief advisor, and a student mess secretary.

IIT Roorkee which was built in 19th century as "James Thomson College"during british period has completed more than 170 years. After independence it was later known as "University of Roorkee"and in 2001, Indian government converted it into one of the 7 IITs as Indian Institute of Technology, Roorkee. The institute provides bachelor's, masters and Phd degree in various fields ranging from engineering, economics, hydrology and art domains. I'm pursuing bachelor's of 'Architecture And Planning'from this institute. Only IIT Roorkee and IIT Kharagpur provides Architecture degree among all IITs. I have been fortunate to be able to study in this prestigious college.IIT Roorkee is blessed with very amazing campus which is 365 acres in size. One can see and experience greenery all around the campus. Institute takes a lot of care of landscaping in the campus. Main building of IIT Roorkee is magnificent and everone visits to experience its beauty. Institute also has one of the biggest library of India - "Mahatma Gandhi Central Library". The scale of library is huge and offers wide range of books and ebooks as well. Departments are spread all across the campus where teaching occurs where a student spends most of his day time, attending classes and doing practicals. College timings are usually from 8am to 6pm depending on time table and 1-2 is the lunch time where studenta have their luch in hostel's mess. After the teaching hours students are actively involved in extra-curricular activities such as dance, singing, robotics, arts, sports and all other on campus groups. There are several groups on campus where students get apportunity to interact with seniors, learn from them and have fun with each other. Institute offers one of the best sports facilities for the students. Sports complex includes cricket cum athletics field, basketball field, volleyball, badminton, tennis, squash, gym, taekando, hockey field, football field and all other indoor sports. This facilities help a student to excell at sports and to participate in sports competitions in other IITs as well. I have been enjoying this sports facilities and I'm very grateful for it.What's special? Everything about this institute is so special. I'm fortunate enough to be able to study from this institute. We are creating memories here which will last forever with us. You get to interact with sharp minds of India and learn from them. We get to realise how beautiful it is to live in harmony with nature. Also there are lot of cultural fests, technical fests and art fest happening throughout the year where we get to enjoy many activities which includes attending concerts, comedy shows, movie screening, dance events etc.I have lived here for a significant time of my life and I have enjoyed every bit of it. Someone coming to this institute is really fortunate. Haappy learning.

One of the best Institute with lots of facilities for students. Very friendly Environment.Natural beauty exist here. Professors are supporting & cooperating one.Yes of course dedicated towards studies & work,they are very serious for Education.They are friendly towards our team members. Biotechnology department attracts me more for its hardworking & sensitive works. Their students are friendly. Yes lot of street dogs are there but if you go on your way then it will more better.
Security check up is good. All the best.

Obviously the place will be good , but I will tell you some cons.
As compared to other IIT's the hostel rooms are very small .
There are some restrictions , ( like time restrictions ) ,
The city in which the IIT is located is not so big and only some part of roorkee is well maintained and maximum part is located in slum and narrow streets .
And when you are preparing so hard to get admited in iitr then obviously it will worth your hardwork and you will get maximum benifits despite of some cons.

I completed my M.Phil in Instrumentation here in 1987. Tandon sir, Mukharji sir, Serge sir used to teach us. I did University Diploma in Instrumentation from Saharanpur campus in 1984.

Large campus full of talent and friendly people. There are no sign boards so difficult to find a particular building. Direct transport facility to capital is available.

One of the best institute of information technology and having the most beautiful campus. It's is very clean and very peaceful. It is not affected by it's noisy surrounded city. Non veg is not allowed in the campus. For having non veg you have to go outside of the campus.

Changed my life! :)

I went to Sangram'2019 which is annual sports fest of IIT Roorkee. I enjoyed the place as the infrastructure is really good. The weather was cold so enjoyment increased. Talking about sangram.. Tatti tournament organise kiya tha. If you look for a fest of IIT level then I tell you MNIT Jaipur sports fest is far better than this. Though that is an NIT but they organise a fest better than this. No fun events in IIT. Just matches happened and they too in a monotonous way.

One of the top engineering institute. Faculty members are highly qualified. Teaching process is very good. Both indoor outdoor games infrastructure is well maintained. Affordable cafeteria. Healthy environment
