The fact that I m still on my vacation and felt strong urge to warn other people about this place is sad.
So this place isn t 5 stars that s first off, there is so much construction/broken areas in this hotel with takes a lot off the appeal & comfort.
So it was my BIRTHDAY and I had unfortunately had an accident and had to go to the hospital. To my pleasure here comes the staff harassing my room and personal phone (already knowing what happened) demanding I still go to their time share regardless of any situation. 4 staff members and the MANAGER. Unprofessional & unethical isn t enough to describe the staff here.

There s nothing special here the valet is grossly overpriced ($50 a night?! Really?) the pool was small & dirty. There were several brawls in their very popular nightclub downstairs. Food is a little below average .. I expect a lot more quality in the food if I m paying $40 for an appetizer.
Way below my expectations. Now I know where to never go again.

It's always amazing to come back here. Amazing modern hotel with key attention to decor detail and customer satisfaction. Classy, elegant, sophisticated and relaxing. Laying by the pool is the best thing I've done for the holidays. Love you Modern!

We are new Diamond Resort members. This was one of our "gift vacations". We go to the big island next. The good.. King bed was very comfortable and the 4 pillows were big and fluffy. The room was clean and did not have the smell of an older place on the beach. We never heard any noise from other rooms. Private balcony with chairs and table. Our room overlooked the parking garage but we did have a fantastic view of the ocean and marina with all the sailboats. Too bad I can't post the picture we took. Staff attentive and friendly. The grounds were lovely & kept up. Expected the bar food & drinks to be pricey. It always is. Had a quick bite & a cocktail two different times and it was fresh and tasty. Just what we needed. Wait staff very accommodating. Sunscreen provided in a big pump bottle by the pool. Did not use the pools.

The bad...We are VIP Members but no upgrades or extras as we were told to expect and ask for. Coffee was provided ONLY the first day. Gee didn't know to pack a dozen K-cups. The staff very sweetly said sorry no more coffee. FYI - NO room cleaning service for the first 3 or 4 days. We were ok with this. I can make a bed. The place is definitely worn. VERY worn and well past renovation time. It is under construction and will be amazing at a later date. Just not for our visit. As it stands in early 2020 it is a 3.5 star hotel. It gets stars for the 2 pools, spa, pool bar and cafe. Nothing offered to offset the construction and closed amenities. Drink or appetizer coupon? Would have liked coffee and robes. We did enjoy our stay on the island and at the hotel.

Good view of the ocean. The property is inpeccable. Here are views from the room balcony. About a four minute walk to Waikiki beach. The property is owned by Diamond Resorts. I have to say that at a property that Diamond owns they have an excellant record of five star ratings and this property fits that model.

Truly excellent hotel. Rooms were clean and ...umm... modern (for lack of a better word). It was just far enough from Waikiki beach that it was quiet at night, so we could get some rest; but close enough for us to easily walk back and forth. I would stay here again.

Stayed for 5 consecutive days. Daily housekeeping starts cleaning and repairs towels and bed making. Since there are Japanese people at the counter, you can consult about the hotel and various things. 15 minutes walk to Ala Moana Shopping Center. It is also convenient to move from the neighboring Ilikai Hotel on the pink line [JCB card presentation impossible campaign period].

If you are used to sleeping on a soft or medium mattress this is probably not the place for you, the mattress is rock hard. They have foam pads available at the front desk upon request. Woke up at 6:40 Friday morning to loud protests by employees near the pool area, my husband and I wanted to join them because we were so frustrated by our stay there. They will come knock on your door if you turn them down the first time when they try to sell you a time share. Also you don t get housekeeping every day. Never staying here again, I don t care that the rooms will be redone.

Recent new owner so rooms will be changing. At present they are all white and sleek. There are shelves in the closet, but no drawers in the room. The beds are very low and on the firm side. Views are great depending upon room rate. The staff is extremely helpful. The was a wine cooler in the room, we preferred a refrigerator and one was brought up, placed under the desk with no loss of usable space. 2 pools, although one is strictly a sunning area. The beach is a short walk and is shared with Hilton Hawaiian Village. Separate towels for the beach and pool are available at the pool, no extra charges.

Beautiful hotel. Very hip and perfect location with beach access, walking distance to the main strip and walking distance to Ala Moana. Valet parking only. The hotel bar is very cool. Definitely be sure to pay a visit to The Study! Would stay there again.

Beautiful location near the beach, shopping, and restaurants. The food and bars on site were great and the nightclub is convenient if you want to dance. Had a city room view which had a perfect view of the harbor and sunsets.
Downside is the room and service. Probably the most uncomfortable bed I've ever stayed on in a hotel like this. The hallways were also extremely dark to the point where people have trouble reading the room numbers. The 2nd sunset pool was disappointingly closed for. The hotel claims their renovating the above complaints, but it seems to only be for select "owners rooms" which are reserved for their timeshare owners. The room service isn't consistent, some replaced water and cups, some left our dirty stuff on the counters without replacement. Also the birds by their restaurant, which is fully outdoors, are out of control. They will literally land on your table next to your plate while you're eating. Objectively 3.5 stars, but rounded up to 4 since we had such a great time.

Revamped older hotel, we went to the pool area for dinner, great options, great service by Daniel, drinks were perfect, nice background music. For me it was a little weird to dine next to the pool and be splashed, we could of moved but we're too tired. Also the website was bad, so was their yelp presence. Need some Internet presence assistance

Great location. You can access from beach, various shopping mall, to large variety of restaurants within 15 to 20 minutes walk. Rooms are simple, nice and clean. Beds are comfortable. Special thanks goes to our room attendant, Florence, from the house keeping department. My wife and I stayed here for five nights and we are not the neatest people. She kept the room clean, organized, and well stocked. She also reminded us of the Friday night fireworks and given us some advise on the local area. Cannot thank her enough.

Be sure to ask front desk if you need anything. They are happy to provide you with plates, tea sets to appliances such as fridge, microwave, etc. Just ask and take advantage of the service they provide. You're paying for their resort fee anyways, might as well, right?

Loved it here and hope to someday return for another stay. Staff were so friendly and let us check in at 7am which was such a relief having just arrived off a sleepless overnight flight from NZ. Facilities were spotless. Lovely to get a newspaper each day. Great touch having a ukelele in the room. Location was perfect - we loved the Duke's Lagoon end of town as we weren't there to party but to relax and unwind.

We stayed at this hotel in May 2018 and were disappointed at the hidden resort fees of an additional $30.00 per day plus $45.00 per day of valet parking. We were informed at checkout! Buyer Beware!

This was the worst hotel I ve ever stayed at. From beginning to end it was a nightmare. We were immediately ushered in to the concierge desk after over 10 hours of flying and pressured into booking an excursion. The woman said that because we booked at the hotel we could get a discount. Awesome right? Wrong. We were also signed up for a meeting that would show us around the hotel . We declined going and I asked the lady if it was connected with the excursion we booked and she said no. Well to our surprise it was connected to it and now what we paid 100 dollars for would be paying 240 dollars for. When we asked to cancel the excursion, that wasn t an option so we tried to reschedule the meeting. Well when my husband went to the meeting they said that I also needed to be there, and it would take 4 hours instead of an hour and a half. they wouldn t let us extend check out so we could both attend. We felt like all we were was an income to them and would never book there again. All we wanted was to enjoy our first time in Hawaii together for my birthday and our anniversary. I will say that the room was always spotless and the workers at the front desk were very nice. Unfortunately that s not enough for me to refer anyone here. You would think that after making multiple complaints that they would try and accommodate us, but that was not the case. Please think before you book with this hotel.

We stayed in the suite for 4 days from 9/27 to 3 nights. I visited at 15 o'clock in the check-in time, but it has not been cleaned yet. From there, I wait for 30 minutes in the lobby, and if I go there again I am told that I have been waiting for 15 minutes. I finally got the key and entered the room, there was another customer!
Japanese staff is not folded at all, not only survive in the Google translation and clumsy English, now There is also a very sad feeling had visited in the honeymoon.

Beautiful hotel, amenities - just beware of the concierge's free gift. Diamond Resorts International (Timeshare 2.0) have taken this hotel over, and the concierge team are now sales reps keen to tee you up for a 90 minute sales consultation in exchange for 150USD prepaid Visa or discounted tour or helicopter ride...

Where bookings are made via a travel agency or by any method beyond the Hotel web site, the Hotel charges a further $40 'resort fee' for no extra facility or service. This is simply to recover any web site discount. I found the Manager arrogant, room very basic and the pool area tired, worn and reminiscent of a lack of maintenance or upgrading.

Not sure if the staff is happy, but the bartender was not very polite. We had great table service and our wait person was leaving for the day and said her replacement would be right over. He never came ao went to the bar to order drinks. Had to wait as the bartender ignored me and he wasn't busy. I am super polite because I appreciate how hard we all work especially those in food service. He didn't acknowledge my thanking him for the drinks. Also the business center is being renovated and there is no quiet place for a work call. I went to their "secret" bar called the Study because our was open in the morning abs someone rudely told me they were having a meeting so I couldn't sit there. I tried to go out to the pool but there are protests that start at 6am right at the pool to draw awareness to the fact they are converting many rooms to timeshares and that they suddenly laid off many support staff without warning. Lastly since the property is not on the beach the have a mock beach pool where many of the deep blue tiles are missing so it has all these white spots in their deep blue sunning pool. I will day the lunch we had was delicious and again our service for lunch was great.

The hotel is well presented however the front office procedures are atrocious. Had to queue for fifteen minutes to check-in before a very lengthy check-in process (approx. another 10 minutes). Then to top things off today I unfortunately locked my key in the room so had to return to reception to collect another key. Again, had to queue for approx. 15 minutes just to get a key. There must be a better system. Will not be returning.... It's just another hotel.

I think calling it a luxury hotel is tooting its horn a bit more than deserved...

It s in a good area; not so crazy in the heart of Waikiki, but close enough to Ala Moana and other stores/restaurants. Unfortunately, they only offer Valet Parking, which is a charge on top of the resort fee. This was incredibly annoying. I suppose that s part of the price you pay to stay in the area though, literally and figuratively.

The quality of the room was just okay. It wasn t anything special. In fact, the corner of the bed looked like it had been chewed up by a dog. However, it was clean enough. The amenities were decent throughout the hotel. Don t bother with the spa (at least massage services). Expensive and super mediocre quality. I think the best parts of the hotel were the pool decks and restaurant.

Likely wouldn t stay here again, but it served its purpose.

Oh ya, don t fall for the front desk telling you to stop by the concierge after check in to get your Welcome Package. It s just people trying to sell you stuff and drag you into their timeshare trap.

Awesome pool and bar, great restaurant inside. Towels for the pool provided. You get an awesome fireworks show at night, and the pool lights up with beautiful colors. The beds are just a little hard. A thicker comforter would be nice. Staff was nice, allowed me to store my luggage for a few hours and go out on the town before my late flight. Great view of the docd and it's right across from an ABC store in case you want to grab some essentials.

2nd time staying at modern and definately noticed decline in service. asked if we could get a later checkout even by 1-2 hours so we could enjoy the beach and shower before our 3pm flight home and was told no with no alternative options. checkout is at 10am! no options to buy water after the one shop closes at 9pm. was bombarded right after check in and our long travel day by the conceriege trying to sell us on tours etc. we pay a daily resort fee of $40 something per day for what? when we asked for bottled water there were no options on site.

Awesome place to stay if you are visiting Waikiki. Very clean and modern, and good location, especially if you have rental car with you (right next to free day parking and $1/hour for night parking).
Even the city view room we got had unexpected partial ocean view, which was fantastic. I regret moving to different resort for rest of the stay...

RARE level of customer service and concern! While on vacation on the Big Island our grandson who has Downs Syndrome was Life-Flighted to the Pediatric Intensive Care Unit of Kapiolani Hospital on Oahu with a life threatening infection. Our son-n-law is active military and needed to be returned from deployment. Our daughter and son-n-law spent the last 7 days sleeping in the hospital. We booked a room for them at the Modern to give them a decent nights rest. When hearing of their circumstance the hotel staff (Lana) provided a suite and wonderful attention. Rare to see this level of customer service and compassion. They have earned a lifetime of loyalty.

We had a very good time at the Modern Honolulu. They welcomed us with a nice cocktail. We found a well-sized, very clean room as well as a bathroom with everything we needed. It is about a 10 min walk to Waikiki beach by using the access in the pool area. There are lot's of restaurants and shops on the famous beach walk nearby. There is free WLAN and the staff is friendly and happy to help with any questions. The fitness room can be used 24/7. If you have a rental car which I recommend to explore Oahu you can use the valet parking which is $28 a day. We did not see a cheaper alternative. If you do not have a rental car you might want to use the Speedi shuttle which can be booked at the airport to arrange transfers from and to the Modern Honolulu. The drive takes about 20 minutes. If you are looking for a luxury hotel in Honolulu to celebrate your Honeymoon or anniversary I can recommend the Modern Honolulu.

The only thing this hotel has going for it is the location. Has a nice view of the marina. The pool area is nice too. But other than that the room we are currently in is not what your website says it is. The walls are thin and you can hear people talking in the next room and in the hallway. Especially that we are by the elevator. The room has no refrigerator. The pillow and bed are awful. There is no space to put your clothes. No draws for 3 people. Wondering how people with big families are doing it? The furniture is cheap quality and the carpet in the room is dated. The bathroom is ok. Nothing that great. So the superficial look from the outside is fine but the inside is definitely a two star!

The Modern Honolulu is a great hotel!! We stayed for 10 nights in a 2x double room. We had a lovely genuine welcome on arrival, all the staff were consistently helpful & friendly - shout out to Eric on the front desk who made our son's day sith his knowledge of European football leagues ;)
The rooms & facilities are fabulous - modern & clean as you would expect. And the location, right next door to the marina, beach & Hilton village & their lagoon, plus several restaurants & our favourite the Ala Moana mall, it couldn't be better. We will definitely be back!

My third stay at the Modern. It used to be nice but not any more
Overall hotel and rooms are now looking rather dated
New owners more interested in selling their timeshare than looking after clients needs.
Overpriced poolside restaurant only . food and service average .
Formal restaurant now closed and is set up as a timeshare sales area
No room service when it was requested.
Newly added $30 per day resort fee not mentioned when booking hotel.

Staff protests at resort disruptive and noisey

Overall very disappointed with our stay . We went there to have a peaceful holiday away from our busy work lives
not have staff try to sell a timeshare
We definitely won t be back
