A carefully considered 3 star rating. If I was just rating the room it would be a generous 1.

When I arrived I noticed the room was very warm. There was no air conditioning, only a sash window and a heated towel rail that was turned on... On a hot, humid day.

The bathroom was extremely narrow and by now also very hot and humid. Note, letting water out of the bath makes the sink gurgle.

I was woken up several times in the night by noise outside, I had to keep the window open to avoid overheating so there was no escape from the mating calls and territorial marking by Southport's night-time denizens. As an anthropological investigation it is enlightening but if you're working in the morning it's not ideal. Also the TV is very poor quality piped via dodgy distribution amplifier into the aerial socket.

Breakfast is dangerous. The plates are under a heat-lamp set to "immolate" and the utensils for serving the food items are not isolated from each other meaning cross contamination of vegetable to meat items and vice versa is very very easy and probably happens a lot. Probably best to avoid if you are a vegetarian, or a food hygeine inspector.

The bar is good of an evening, if a little pricey but then that's the times. The barman who served me took a lot of grief from my newly-found single-serve friends and I at the bar yet continued to make his customers happy. On my second night there was a guy singing in the bar to a backing track... Standard advanced karaoke crooning business, ok if you like that sort of thing which to be fair a lot of the clientele do.

The general layout of the place feels like something out of Ghostbusters or The Witches and you can easily get confused if you're an idiot.

In conclusion, if you are over 80, want to re-live the 1970s, are a lizard requiring constant heat then this is a great stay. If however you are a human expecting a relatively comfortable stay in a hotel up to modern standards then DON'T DO IT. Stay in the Premier Inn, you won't wake up several times in the night and/or become a sweaty puddle.

A Victorian era hotel that's in need of some TLC but like a glamorous older woman, still looks great with some laughter lines. Cosy rooms, nice views and good Groupon offers. The pool was relaxing & the staff, helpful. Quality breakfast too

Visited here today with my daughter's, was greeted by Nicole at spa reception who was more than helpful and very welcoming. We then went through to have treatments carried out by Abbie. Giving the fact Abbie is new to her role this didn't show. It was a really relaxing and professional service and we were really impressed. The hotel itself is in much need of updating ,was disappointed to find the sauna was out of use and there were only certain machines in working use in the gym. However this was outweighed by the afternoon tea selection which was really good ,Abbies treatments and the lovely staff. Good luck for the future and we will be returning again.

The hotel is great location wise. We had a promenade view. The bedroom and bathroom were very big although a bit dated. Bonus was 2 armchairs to sit on. Breakfast was self-service and very nice. We would definitely go here again. There was so much to see in the local area. Lovely shops.

We stay here on a weekly basis and are always happy with our stay. The hotel has good facilities and is good value for money, breakfast is tasty too.
Trinity and Lee are always very helpful and always do their best to make our stay as comfortable as possible. Keep up the good work guys :)

All inclusive Xmas party night... buffet meal was ok.. but a 30 minute queue for a drink and you can't get your partners drink, which means double the people in the queue! We said we wouldn't come back after the awful experience 2 years ago... nothings changed! We wont be back again!!

NO BEST IN WESTERN.

NO BEST IN WESTERN.
Come on staff, a smile and a warm greeting cost nothing . The hotel is a grand building but let down by its staff. Our room was excellent so no complaints on that. Restaurant ha ha now that was a joke. We had to ask twice for a jug of water, bread roll arrived well after the soup had been eaten. Onion rings never arrived at all with steak dinner, coffee came before desert. Cheese & biscuits eventually arrived but without a knife & apple crumble without the custard. Breakfast was sadly no better. Bottom line is if your hungry go somewhere else to eat.

Can't fault the room or the food but two areas let it down. Firstly we booked through wowcher which said we would get a voucher off treatment but no treatments are available Mondays and appointments are fully booked. Secondly we were sat outside in the conservatory area and they came and shifted us at 6pm saying they were closing off the area. There's no where else to sit in the sun with drinks from the bar. Staff are lovely and do go out of their way to make your stay enjoyable.

Not stayed but attended Southport Jazz Festival and had a meal and a few drinks. Faded Grandeur I suppose, in desparate need of upgrade decaratively. Main event room had the worst leak coming through the ceiling I've ever seen. Food OK in the Pavilion restaurant but just OK. Again in need of modernisation itself. Drinks usual hotel prices. Jazz festival great, staff nice but this place needs millions spending on it. Sorry Best Western.

On arrival the receptionist said we hadn't paid for dinner which we had, then she found it. On arrival at the restaurant later in the evening the waiter said we hadn't paid for dinner. We were made to stand in the corridor with everyone More

Car park runs the full length of the hotel but make sure you inform reception of your number plate as its operated under the eye camera system. The hotel has plenty of rooms to offer with front facing sea rooms to standard rooms and executive rooms. The restaurant and bars are good with a nice offering of products. Main lounge area with piano or a large conservatory bar with lively music. Function rooms are often used for private dinners or wedding parties.

Bought a spa day here with four friends- paid a deposit.

Spa day was cancelled due to staff illness - which obviously is disappointing but cant be helped. The worst part was how I have been dealt with from then on.

Was offered a refund for the deposit- I paid this at the end of February and still no refund has been given and it is now April.

I ve rang and sent several
Emails all with no response.

Disappointing and unfair treatment. Hope nobody else has to go through the same thing. Clearly a money making scheme - be wary or the spa day offers- you wil NOT be refunded!

Very old hotel with a very expensive restaurant. You can hear everything from the other rooms including the toilet. Rooms are tired and you can't control the temperature. Either freezing or roasting. No view. Good location on the prom and very lovely staff. Wouldn't recommend at all but that's nothing to do with the staff

Used Groupon deal but will go back. Treatment of full body massage was fantastic. Very knowledgeable and experienced staff. Relaxation lounge was very comfortable.
Pool is a little bit dated but large enough and clean. Steam room and sauna was good.

Absolutely shocking. A comedy if errors from cold rooms and baking hot corridors to cottage pie without mash potato and staff who are the polar opposite of helpful! Would not stay here again unless it was the only place to stay. Rooms were clean though, but almost everything else was quite dire

Victorian hotel, with limited parking + road parking (chargable). Nice location, but suffering fron lack of modernisation. Cold room, sash-windows and flaky paint. Large bar area - good for relaxing and people watching. Wi-Fi seemed ok.

Spa made the stay worth it however service on food was very very slow and a disappointing breakfast, overcooked hash browns and no meat free or gluten free anything. You can tell it used to be grand once.it looks like major efforts are being made with it but perhaps just not the funds. There was a bad leak (thankfully on the ground floor) while we were there. Bedroom was clean comfy and had a good sized bathroom.

Nice friendly staff, and lovely pool/steam room.

Shame about the beds, we could feel the springs on the mattress,
Also the window in the room was completely sealed shut, so we couldn't get any fresh air in the room.
With this being a hot summer's day made it a very uncomfortable day and night.

Just had a fabulous weekend here. The room was nice - big enough for the 2 of us. We had a couple of hours in the pool and spa and what a treat that was! We enjoyed the bar too as it was nice and relaxing and a decent choice of drinks. But the cherry on the cake for us was the staff - they were so polite and friendly, such a treat these days! Thank you Clifton for a great weekend and we look forward to coming again in the not-too-distant future. 10 out of 10!
