The Press Gang Restaurant Review

Considering the cost of a meal at this place, the quality of the dishes served was barely average. There is lots of room for improvement.
Unlikely to be back here again. Will stick to The bicycle thief or Chives.

Excellent spot for a special occasion. Try the Drill "It was Fantastic". Its our favorite spot in Halifax and we have tried them all.

Incredible ambiance with lovely live music and amazing food. On the pricey side but well worth it for a nice night out!

Amazing oysters, fantastic service, great entertainment.

Was expecting amazing, got pretty run of the mill for twice as much as I'd pay elsewhere. Service was lacking, especially considering how empty it was as we were the only ones there for most of our meal.

I have to say the torched oysters were very tasty, if only the rest of the meal was as good.

Went for my mother in laws 70th Birthday and not very good experience. Have been in the past and enjoyed very much. Service was by the assistant manager and was bad from moment walked in. We were a party of 8 and all thought the same. 7 of 8 had their steaks and all were under cooked and warm not hot. All meals were served warm. Starters came 1 hour and 15 minutes after ordering and bread a bit before that. Mains were almost an hour after that. We were not in a rush to eat but really should have left after trouble with the apps. Any and all attempts to have matters resolved with management have to this day, 3 weeks later, have gone unattended. Sorry to say will not be returning and will miss the Press Gang we all loved so much.

4 of us went last week. The service was great. The mains were a disaster. 2 of us had seafood risotto- the rice was so overcooked it was like congee. The seafood was overdone as well. Our guest had rack of lamb- also not medium rare as requested. It was a Wed so maybe the chef was not in. But at over $600 for dinner one would expect fairly simple dishes could be done properly. So disappointing.

Stopped in for just a salad. Interesting but tasty dressing on a Greek salad with a twist. Didn t really care for the fact that the water was poured directly from the tap.

Great ambience! Great music! Great Whiskey selection!

Oh this place was a treat! Excellent oysters, drinks, and service. Highly recommend. If I had one day in Halifax, I would eat dinner here, or at least stop in for a bite and a drink.

slightly disappointed. the lobster was over cooked it seemed. the service was fine but i was the only person in the restaurant as i arrived around 530pm. seemed a bit overpriced after all was said and done. amazing building though

Good service. Nice ambiance. 1st night of new menu...everything over salted to our tastes anyway.

We ate there yesterday.... the food was okay, but was missing spices and dressing on the other hand one dish had so much chills on it that you couldn't taste anything else, all in all not worth the money. The portions had a good size though.
Unfortunately the wine was I guess a cheap one. I never had a headache like this after drinking white wine. My mother had the same one and woke up with a headache too. We never experienced that not even after eating and drinking at the cheapest pub pub in town. Would not go back and not recommend to eat there if you want to eat good sea food.

This has be to one of the best seafood restaurant. The food was EXCELLENT. The only reason I did not give it 5 star was due to the fact that we waited over 30 mins.for our main. Other then that it was a great food experience.

First place in Halifax that nailed the combination of outstanding food and outstanding service. The price is not cheap but is exceptional value for the quality of the meal. I have had far more expensive meals that weren t as good. The ambiance is incredible in this making heritage building. Highly recommended.

We dinned as a larger group and it was a memorable experience. The food was fantastic, the server we had was amazing and very delightful. However, within the first 5 minutes of dining the server spilled two drinks. The drinks spilt all over the back and pants of one of the individuals in our group, and down the side of the leg of another. The individual who got spilled as on was extremely nice about the whole situation, did not get mad and was very understanding that it was an accident. However, we were disappointed in how this was handled, the server apologized, there was no offer of comping the drinks that were dropped on two customers. For the next two hours that individual sat in went clothes throughout the dinner. At the end of the "experience" we asked for their meal to be covered, as they sat wet throughout the whole dinner. The management came over and was beyond rude to the whole group. They were very agressive and standoffish. They were quick to state it was an accident and that no one was at fault, scolding the individual who was wet for wanting a free meal. While we agreed it was an accident, and the server was not at fault, our friend was damp and uncomfortable throughout the whole meal. Based on how the management treated us, and if that is someone who represents how the company feels towards patrons we do not recommend it to anyone.

Very cool place with excellent food and good music in a comfortable setting.

The food is way too expensive for what it is. However, the room is phenomenal and the service was pretty attentive.

I don't think you can top the location and atmosphere of Press Gang. There isn't anything quite like it. The live music can be loud near the front, so depending on the type of dinner you plan for, sometimes the rear tables allow for better conversation. The food is great, and while the prices are up there, they still deliver high enough quantity and quality to justify it in my opinion.

Great atmosphere in this historic building. Superb menu that follows through with its service, meals and flavour. Very deep selection of Scotch, including tasting flights.

My husband ordered a $42 strip loin, medium rare. There was so much gristle and he was unable to cut through it, much less chew it. Fortunately when he commented to the staff, it was removed from the bill. He was offered another, apologies were made, however he declined. 5 stars for ambiance and service though.

I had the chicken and scallop, which were good. My husband ordered the risotto and found it chewy and sent it back for the seafood phyllo. We also had the peanut butter dessert and it was DELICIOUS!

Food fabulous, oysters magnificent all from Nova Scotia, risotto with scallops delicious, Beef Tenderloin perfectly cooked and the ambience of one of the oldest buildings in Nova Scotia topped a dining experience second to none, not to mention the wonderful staff, and a great wine selection, we will definitely be back...

The scotch selection is impressive and the service is excellent.

Incredible place for dinner and drinks. We had some amazing oysters from different provinces and then had a piece of cod that was delicious. This place is pricey, but well worth it. Make sure you make reservations.

Lovely atmosphere, food and service. Seafood Risotto is out of this world!

This place is a dining experience. We came for the oysters after work and they were amazing. We ended up staying and dining and drinking for three hours. That made for a pricey night but I have zero regrets. The staff was wonderful, the food was fantastic and to top it off, a jazz singer and pianist played half the time we were there. Wonderful wonderful wonderful. Have the oysters, the muscles, the halibut and the orchard ave cocktail. finish the night with an amazing scotch and try to tell me it wasn't worth every penny.

Probably one of the best high end restaurants in the city. Prices are higher then your average restaurant but nothing insane. A great place for a anniversary or first date to really impress your love ones.

Amazing oysters, whiskey selection and top notch service.

This place is amazing!! The restaurant looks like antique wooden whiskey bar with touch of artistic beauty ~ we've had enough seafood so we tried the beef tenderloin and lamb - it was well grilled and perfect! The oysters are also very fresh which we loved it - highly recommend this place!

Well it's the oldest building in Halifax right across from the oldest building the St.Paul's Anglican Church. We enjoyed The Dragon's Breath Blue cheese Steak and Bacon dish, And were welcomed with warm bread and flavored butter with our dish to soak up the very flavorful gravy. The drinks were served fast and neat. Knowledgeable staff, clean and great atmosphere. Lucky enough to show up to some live jazz. Price was what you would expect down town Halifax.

Press gang is such a lovely experience. It's absolutely stunning inside, the service is spectacular and they have live music (a pianist) some nights and it just makes your time at the restaurant romantic and lovely. They have a large selection of scotch and the food is so so delicious. It is a bit pricy but worth it for a night out, either celebrating a birthday or anniversary or just being out.

The decor and classic original Halifax building combined with solid food, oysters and a decent wine list make this a must visit.

Super rich in history. I can't spoil it for you. Stop in for one of the best meals you will ever have. Service is excellent. Ambiance is over the top....special. If you are new or visiting Halifax this is a can't miss.

Excessively expensive for average food. Other fine dining restaurants serve better fresh seafood and lobster for less money and better execution.

Had an amazing meal here, the lamb was spectacular and the lobster was equally as good. They have a great whiskey selection, some of it is ridiculously overpriced, and great cocktails. The only reason I gave it 4 instead of 5 is because it does attract a pretentious crowd.

Excellent food and cool atmosphere. The best risotto I ve ever had in my life. Rose sangria was also excellent!

The best charcuterie board I have ever eaten anywhere. The foie gras cannot be missed!!! It s been a couple weeks now and I m still dreaming of it! I do find the prices a bit steep. It s definitely a must experience at least once in your life. The oysters were divine.

One of the best restaurants in the city of Halifax. The food is amazing and is so delicious. The inside of the restaurant is old stone walls. Only down side is the prices....which on the very high side .

I was immediately greeted with a warm and cozy atmosphere. The staff were knowledgeable and friendly. They answered any questions I had.

At one point we were given samples of Scotch. It was delightful.

The menu was classy and the food was absolutely delicious and succulent. Yeah, that's right. Succulent. I'm using it unironically.

Don't pass up this place if you ever have an opportunity, and that special someone? They'll like it too.

My wife and i ducked in there while out on the town. The ambiance with the decor and the live jazz was terrific. Additionally the bartender was excellent and she had some recipes for mocktails for the pregnant wife which were excellent!

The Press Gang is such a beautiful, quiet space. We had cocktails, oysters, seafood risotto and the halibut with gnocchi and everything was delicious and flavorful and perfectly cooked. Our service was great and we would definitely recommend for a nice night out!

Place is amazing.
Steak was delicious. Scallops so good! We went for dine around (aka winterlicious) and it was so good. Even without the deal we ll be back.

We had a really great experience. It was a spur of the moment decision to eat here and it was an amazing meal. We tend to let our servers make choices about appetizers and drink selections and our server, Brad, made some fantastic suggestions. I highly recommend the short rib if it's still on the menu when you visit.

It's so much fun to dine in this restaurant. You're eating incredible food, with the feeling you stepped back in time by 100 years
