About The opportunity network
The Opportunity Network: Empowering Underrepresented Students for a Brighter Future
The Opportunity Network is a non-profit organization that aims to empower underrepresented students by providing them with the necessary tools and resources to succeed in college and beyond. The organization was founded in 2003 by Jessica Pliska, who recognized the need for more support for low-income and minority students who face significant barriers to success.
The Opportunity Network's mission is to ignite the drive, curiosity, and agency of underrepresented students on their paths to and through college and into thriving careers. The organization achieves this goal by offering a range of programs that provide academic support, career guidance, mentorship, networking opportunities, and financial assistance.
One of the key programs offered by The Opportunity Network is its flagship Fellows Program. This program provides high-achieving low-income students with access to top-tier colleges and universities across the country. Through this program, students receive comprehensive support throughout their college application process – from test preparation to essay writing – as well as ongoing mentorship throughout their college years.
In addition to its Fellows Program, The Opportunity Network also offers several other initiatives designed to help underrepresented students succeed in school and beyond. These include:
Career Fluency®: A program that helps high school juniors explore different career paths through internships, job shadowing opportunities, industry panels, workshops on professional skills development.
College Success Academy®: A program that provides first-generation college students with academic coaching during their freshman year of college.
Alumni Career Advancement (ACA): A program designed specifically for graduates of The Opportunity Network's Fellows Program who are seeking employment or further education after graduation.
Through these programs – along with its commitment to access and community – The Opportunity Network has helped thousands of underrepresented students achieve success in higher education and beyond. In fact:
100% of Fellows graduate from high school
98% enroll in four-year colleges
90% graduate from four-year colleges within six years
80% secure full-time employment or attend graduate school within six months after graduation
These impressive statistics demonstrate just how effective The Opportunity Network's approach can be when it comes empowering underrepresented youth.
