Wonderful museum!! Tickets were only $1! Staff were so nice and welcoming and were a wealth of information! There were two free movies throughout the museum and lots of hands on activities for kids. You could spend a whole day here reading everything.

Oh my word this place was amazing! We foolishly only allotted 2 hours to come here when really I could have almost spent at least a half day or more seeing everything. I couldn't believe the high quality of everything in this museum, especially when it only costs a dollar to get in! We had just had a pretty bad experience at Colonial Williamsburg so it was so encouraging to then come and have an amazing time seeing all of the great history and exhibits at this museum. I asked our kids tonight which places they liked more and it was unanimously the Mariners' Museum. The great reviews are correct, this place is fantastic!

Really cool experience! They have so much to see there at the museum. There are displays and models ranging from the 1500s to present. Definitely a great place to take ship fans. The entry prices are real cheap. The museum also has old pieces of the USS Monitor (Iron clad) being preserved in an exibit.

This is a great place to spend some time and is definitely worth a visit. Entry fee is only $1 but you can leave a donation if you enjoyed your visit. There are a full range of pieces from sailing boats to historical artifacts. There is a viewing area where you can see artifacts in various stages of restoration.
There are restored artifacts on display. There are knowledgeable staff walking around who are eager to answer any questions that you may have. There is an outside walking park but wasn't able to do it due to bad weather on the day of our visit. There is a gift shop and cafe on site.

Now here is America s best kept secret!!! But why???

This place is amazing!!! Not the same place I remember when I was a little girl. Fort about objects behind glass to stand and look at then read a small card on a wall. Nope not here anymore.

This was full immersion into history from talking floors to walking into the captain s quarters this place will blow your mind. I totally forgot that I was in Newport News Virginia and thought I was at the Smithsonian Institute. This museum has managed to bring a long time story of the famed Monitor Merrimack battle to life with a giant full replica of the Monitor. My pictures do not do it any justice.

As you know I am unable to get around on foot. Can you believe that unlike their water brothers in Virginia Beach (the Virginia Aquarium) they had free mobile wheelchairs!!!

Yes, yes, yes of course I had the food. Well worth the dime. The chef Billy Jones totally rocked the show with the Quesadilla. The food and atmosphere of the restaurant was EXCELLENT!!! The staff was very friendly and courteous

Bougie rating is 10!!! The customer service was above and beyond excellent. A random museum worker took time to show us an exhibit that featured an African American sailor. The agent at the counter smiled as she helped us. The gift made me feel like I was in Saxs Fifth Avenue with the selections of gifts and merchandise.

I had the opportunity to speak with the museum curator and he stated that he was aware that in the past the Museum had a more European slant, but they are reaching out to other organizations and seeking items as well as storylines to add to the museum to make a more global story.

So, at family reunions if you hear a story share that story with the museum they may be able to work with you on fleshing out that story and acquiring objects. Just make sure you have written facts to support it. Also, our HBCU s played a major role in all wars how about sharing the info.

Enjoy the museum if you liked this review then click follow, so you get updates as I travel around Virginia on a budget.

Been to the museum many times over the last 20 or so years and it doesn't disappoint. If the weather is nice there is a very long trail around the lake, or any distance you choose. The exhibits change over time and are top quality. Enjoy.

We were the first people in today and everything was awesome. Every exhibit drew you in and told you it s story. The people who worked here were also very informative and helpful with the layout as the place is very large. They have an observation of the actual monitor turret they have in some sort of ionizing bath. Very interesting. Cool. Good. Fun family good. Nice.
