My family made a trip to Mammoth Site during a recent vacation. Each of us found it to be interesting and enjoyed the visit. It's difficult to find things we all enjoy as our children range in age from infant to young adult. It is certainly worth your time.

You have to visit this, it is incredible. I wish the tour guide was a little more enthusiastic, but I understand the monotony of saying the same thing over and over again, all day, every day for months on end. 5 star rating is for the importance of this scientific find.

Edit: rated 5 stars, changed to 4 some how, and now I fixed it back to 5!

History, prehistoric creatures (or fossils), and unique experiences are all things I enjoy, and this site does not disappoint any of the 3. If you are in any way interested in this type of attraction, you will be glad you took the tour. The (indoor) dig site is incredible, and the price is reasonable and worth the stop if you are near Hot Springs.

The really stepped up during covid and have an app for self guided tours. Really interesting information! We loved how you could see people excavating the fossils on site. Very helpful staff too!

Editing the review as I confused it with Mammoth Hot Springs in yellowstone. The mammoth hot springs in SD is a great spot to see mammoth fossil. We took the guided tour and would recommend this stop to anyone travelling from Mt rushmore to yellowstone

This place is awesome. My youngest daughter told her grandparents about it, almost exactly verbatim from what the tour guide said. She decided she was going to be a "digger" right then and there.
Its worth the drive to Hot Springs...do NOT miss this.

I was amazed that a dinosaur dig with a building over the site they were discovered would have even existed. I gotta say it was a great idea, and I think it's great that the public has the opportunity to visit an open put dig with the largest concentration of Mammoth bones in North America.

We drove to Hot Springs specifically to go to this site. It was several hours drive away from where we were headed. Their website allowed us to book tickets for May 21st. When we arrived at the site we were told it wasn t open until the next day. We were disappointed but thought no big deal, we will get a refund got our tickets. Except they refused to give us a refund. Stating that the website is run by a third party and we would have to call them. I consider that to get ridiculous! They wouldn t take responsibility for a mistake that shouldn t have happened! I wouldn t give money to an organization who refuses to take responsibility for their mistake. I get that stuff sometimes happens in life and mistakes are made but they should have enough integrity to be responsible and fix the mistakes.

Plenty of fossils. Lots of history. Tour guides are very generous. I got on a tour with Tianna. She was very nice, especially on her first week of touring! She also was nice to our dog and made sure we had an enjoyable time. Free WiFi, and access to plenty of bathrooms. I would definitely recommend this to anyone who loves history and learning about it!

Probably my favorite stop in SD. Spent a few hours there and came away with a great appreciation for the research being done. The faculty, interns, and volunteers are extremely passionate and knowledgeable. A must if you are at all interested in the sciences.

One-of-a-kind Museum that should not be missed when you're in the area. Exhibits are educational and kids will be entertained. Watch paleontologists dig for Mammoth bones and see how they process them in the lab.

I was worried this would be more for kids.
While it's a great place to take children, you can also come as an adult. Mammoth bones are for everyone, and there was one other couple there at the same time as us sans children. The tour was really nice because there's dedicated take picture time after all the information and you can walk around freely to take them. I didn't have to juggle listening and snapping photos because of this.

So many cool REAL mammoth bones. It is a real excavation site from o former sink hole that unfortunately led to the death of a lot of wooly mammoths. The information guy we talked to said there were at least 120 tusks that had been dug up! It was very cool. And there were also bones of other extinct animals, as well.

Great educational museum. Very friendly staff. The history of the mammoths is amazing as well as how long this took to form. How deep the out goes surprised me. Haven't been here in 40 years and it sure has changed for the better.

Knew that this was a must see attraction for my 9 year old daughter. She loves anything related to paleontology. We were not disappointed making the trip south of Rapid City to see this. I also recommend buying a bag of dirt to run through the sluice. Highly recommend for kids and families that love science, especially paleontology. Wish we could have seen someone working at the dig site. Will visit again if we return to the area.
