About The hyde collection

The Hyde Collection is a historic house & art museum in Glens Falls featuring Old Masters, 19th century European & American art, and Modern & Contemporary art.

The Hyde Collection: A Historic House and Art Museum

The Hyde Collection is a historic house and art museum located in Glens Falls, New York. The museum features an impressive collection of Old Masters, 19th century European and American art, as well as modern and contemporary art. The museum is housed in the former home of Charlotte Pruyn Hyde and her husband Louis Fiske Hyde.

The history of the museum dates back to 1912 when Charlotte Pruyn Hyde inherited her family's estate in Glens Falls. She was an avid collector of fine art and began acquiring works from some of the most renowned artists of her time. Her collection grew over the years, eventually becoming one of the most significant private collections in America.

In 1952, Mrs. Hyde established The Hyde Collection Trust to ensure that her collection would be preserved for future generations to enjoy. Today, The Hyde Collection is a non-profit organization that operates as a public museum.

Visitors to The Hyde Collection can explore over 4,000 works of art spanning several centuries. Some notable pieces include paintings by Rembrandt van Rijn, Edgar Degas, Pierre-Auguste Renoir, Winslow Homer, John Singer Sargent and many others.

One unique aspect of The Hyde Collection is its focus on American artists from the late 19th century through today. Visitors can view works by Georgia O'Keeffe, Edward Hopper and Andy Warhol among others.

In addition to its permanent collection galleries which are open year-round; there are also temporary exhibitions throughout the year featuring contemporary artists or themes related to specific periods or styles within art history.

The historic house itself is also worth exploring with its beautiful architecture dating back to 1912 when it was built for Charlotte Pruyn's family by architect Henry Forbes Bigelow who designed it in Georgian Revival style with elements inspired by English country houses such as Harewood House near Leeds or Castle Howard near York.

Visitors can take guided tours through various rooms including Mrs.Hyde's bedroom which has been restored with period furnishings; Louis Fiske's study where he worked on his business affairs; dining room where guests were entertained during dinner parties hosted by Mrs.Hyde herself; library filled with books collected over decades including rare editions signed by authors like Mark Twain or Charles Dickens among others!

For those interested in learning more about specific aspects related either directly or indirectly towards arts education programs offered at this institution provide opportunities ranging from lectures given experts fields such conservation techniques used preserve artwork all way hands-on workshops teaching skills like drawing painting printmaking sculpture photography digital media more!
