Sultanahmet Square, which was called "Horse Square...

Sultanahmet Square, which was called "Horse Square" in the Ottoman period and "Hippodrome" by the Roman and Byzantines, was accepted as the center of Istanbul by many civilizations. For this reason, empires have always built their most magnificent works in this region.

In the Byzantine period, wheeled car races were held in the Hippodrome, which is located just in front of the present Sultanahmet Mosque. Cars circled this area called "Spina", where the Obelisk, Serpent Column and Millionbar monuments were located. The square, where many important events such as various entertainment, coronation ceremonies and victory processions were held, was the most central part of the city at that time.

Hippodrome

The Hippodrome, which was 117 meters wide and 480 meters long, had a capacity of 100 thousand people. Horse sculptures drew attention on the walls where many works were exhibited. With the invasion of the city by the Latins, these statues were taken to San Marco Square in Venice. The Imperial Palace and monumental places of worship were built in the Hippodrome, and the Acropolis was built in the area where today's Topkap Palace is located.

I Hippodrome

After the Ottomans conquered Istanbul, they named this area "Horse Square" due to the car races and chose this area as the center of the city. The most important indication of this is that Topkap Palace was built very close to the square.

After the proclamation of the Republic, the square took on a touristic face, and today there are mostly hotels, hostels, restaurants and shops.

TarihiIstanbul is one of the most important places to visit is one of the historical squares. It used to have a much greener area now, unfortunately, a place that has suffered from concrete. You can visit the Blue Mosque and the Museum of Turkish-Islamic Art right next door.

Tip: It is a good idea to take your MuseumCard at the Museum of Turkish-Islamic Art because you can get your card here without waiting for a minute, instead of waiting in line at other places.

It is still a place worth going to and continues to preserve its beauty.

NeOne of the historic square that must be in the list in Istanbul. It used to have more green areas but unfortunately it has become more concreted place. At the right of the square you can visit the Blue Mosque and the Museum of Turkish and Islamic Art.
Tip: You can take your Museum Card at the entrance of the museum immediately and you don t have to wait for the Museum Card.
It is still worth a visit and still remains its beauty.

This a good place to find a spot to settle down and watch the people - tour groups, bus loads, locals, people on their way to mosque, families out for a stroll - everyone seems to pass through. And if you see bald gentlemen with rubber sweat bands - they've come to the city for hair transplants ! Also note the dogs and cats that seem to live on the streets (all looking well fed and healthy) and take no notice of the people passing by.

Sultanahmet Square was a hippodrome in Constantino...

Sultanahmet Square was a hippodrome in Constantinople during the Roman Empire and was then a social center of the city and a sports venue. Today it is a square called Sultanahmet Square and is located in the Turkish city of Istanbul, where you notice the character of Islamic architecture represented in the Blue Mosque or the name of the last mosque of Sultan Ahmed, as well as the character of Byzantine architecture represented in the Museum of Aya Sofia, I would recommend visiting it sharply.

The Istanbul city one of many where you want to return again and again. We've been here two years ago, what has changed, that you can use free WiFi on the Sultan Ahmed square. A lot of people there walking, seating on the benches, made photos, having rest. Around the square you will find lot of city's attractions. You can choose good hotels around, can meet blue Mosque, Topkapi Palace museum, Basilica Cistern, etc. We've stay at two minutes walk hotel and it was very comfortable. Around the square you can find local food restaurants to any wallet. There is the place where I want to come back and can recommend it for sightseeing
