The atmosphere is amazing, the drinks are great, the bartenders are awesome. The prices are a little high for PB so be prepared. The hosts and the servers are generally very unhelpful which leads to a lot of frustration every time I go. The drinks and atmosphere are worth it though.

Fabulous and fun - the only thing I wish they had a longer cocktail menu and less emphasis on food. Other than the long menu - this place is high quality and top notch and super on top of their game. You MUST visit this.

Excellent music. Great Decor. Live tiki music and show! Ultimate local Hideout spot. Selection could be better in food and drinks but it is a full bar. Friendly staff. I am definitely coming back. Love the Entry from the Kitchen. Very Goodfellas-esque!

Talk about a unique dining experience...this place is AMAZING! There is a secret entrance into the restaurant, and the decor of the place really brings a cool vibe unlike any other! The food and drinks are incredible, here are my top recommendations: Lava Ice drink, We Owe it all to Guava drink, Painkiller drink, Crispy Brussel Sprouts, and Bao buns. This is the perfect place for a fun date night!

Love this place! It's such a fun spot to come with your friends for great food and drinks! My favorites are the bao buns and corn dish with wontons! SO GOOD! Also, you need to attend their annual Tiki Luau, the food is amazing and drinks are bomb! Also, their location cannot be beat, it's right by the beach!

The Most Beautiful dining event you can ever experience in San Diego! all the drinks are a work of art. the food is amazing and restaurant decorations are one of a kind from the banana hammocks and Hula girls on the bar to the fine artful craftsmanship of the tiki gods and wood flooring.

The staff is great, perfect setting for a cozy evening with that special someone. Food was unique and good, and the chocolate dessert was amazing. We loved the front door being a large walk through freezer, accesssable only through the restaurant next door, Good Time Poke.

Fun tiki themed bar inside Good Time Poke. Nice ambiance but can be a little loud, better for groups or friends than for an intimate date. Classic and reimagined tiki cocktails with an extensive and varied artisanal rum list. Helpful and knowledgeable staff. Prices are in line with similar craft cocktail places. Food is good although portions are a little on the small side. Get one of the punch bowls if you feel like something fun to share.

My boyfriend and I did our date night at this cute little speakeasy and oh my gosh, was it fun!! They decorated the restaurant for the holidays and it was unbelievable! The servers had so much energy, the people eating at the restaurant were all laughing having so much fun! It's definitely the spot to go, especially during the holidays. The VIBE is real. We had the best time. Also, if you order the punch bowl, the whole restaurant transforms! Steam comes out, the music gets all hyped up and then you will hear animal sounds in the speaker. This place is too much fun!

This place is great!! "Secret" tiki bar and restaurant through the fridge! The decor is aaaaamazing!!
I had the Tonkotsu Ramen, and a Tipsy Tentacle, and the chocolate bento box! All of which were tasty! The dessert may have been the best part!
I think the drink could have been a little stronger, and the waitress didn't seem to understand what I meant when I asked for my drink in a tiki mug (which the menu says you can get as long as you out down a credit card, and they charge you $40 for any stolen mugs) and I'd like to see the menu extended a little, especially in vegetarian options as my date could only really order one or two things.
That being said, I will definitely be returning to the grass skirt and recommending it to friends! Fun place, great experience!

AMAZING atmosphere & great service! Tommy made our experience so special! The private back room is open air and such a great place for a small party!

The tuna cones are AMAZING!!! I also love the mini tostadas!

The guava pomegranate drink is REALLY GOOD and good for you!

The pulled pork sliders were yummy.

The bao appetizer was just ok & the pina colada was tart instead of coco-creamy.

I absolutely love this spot - the secret entrance is fun, and so is the occasional tiki chanting. Fire features are fun and the lighting in here provides a great ambiance. Drinks are expensive, but incredible (love the oaxacan dead) and the food is great. Keep an eye on the hours for food service though - several times we came without checking and the kitchen was closed. Can't go wrong here, just prepare to spend some time finding parking.

The food and drinks were great, but the service left something to be desired. It seemed like there was only one waiter working, he was nice but clearly overworked. Great and fun atmosphere. Would definitely come back for a redeeming second chance.

Love, love, love The Grass Skirt. Great drinks, great food, great service. Definitely make reservations and make sure to be on time to your reservation. We have ate outside and inside, both experiences were wonderful. The atmosphere is great. If you are looking for a Tiki Bar or even just a great bar for a night out this is it. It can be pricey, but you can look at the menu before coming.

Saturday night there is a Live DJ! And MAN IS HE GREAT! We were absolutely blown away at his ability to mix old and new music together. And even more blown away when we found out it was a guy mixing live above the giant tiki head booth!

Did I mention it's a speak easy? And you come in through a giant fridge/freezer door?! Bring friends from out of town here for a great experience overall!

We had a great time here! Atmosphere was on the nose. Loved the speakeasy entrance through the Poke restaurant. The appetizers during Happy Hour were delicious! We had the Korean wings and fries. I ordered the drink We Owe It All to the Guava and Eric had the Professor Feathers, drinks were satisfying and matched their perspective descriptions. Don't miss this place if you like Tiki Bars.

The drinks are off the chain! The food isn't organic or sustainable or anything like that, which is regrettable (considering the price), but the drinks are FANTASTIC. They make their own juices and syrups for the drinks in the morning, and they are so fresh. The fish is very fresh as well and I highly recommend ordering it.

PS-- I totally forgot to mention!! The service is absolutely first rate! Best servers and bartenders and manager I have seen in a long time!

Update: I have now been back here 3 more times, and each time since I have experienced that while the atmosphere is awesome and the food and drinks are really good, the service is actually quite terrible. It always takes 5-10 minutes before someone acknowledges us once we've been sat, and twice I've had servers be outright rude. I love this place, but I may not be able to continue bringing people here and recommending them to it because the service is really not good.

Cannot rave enough about The Grass Skirt, hidden behind a freezer door speakeasy style. The food was fresh and tastey. The presentation, lighting, ambiance were all balanced and kept my eyes dancing. The live music was perfect for the venue.

Cool speakeasy bar. When we walked in I thought it was just a takeout place but there's a bar and seating in the back. We got the roasted brussel sprouts with some sweet/spixy drizzle which were amazing and I will try to replicate. We also got the loaded fries and see specialty drinks.

The staff, service, decor, and drinks are exceptional, excellent. The friendly manager helped correct things expeditiously. Our waitress was sweet and quick. My only complaints are noise and the salty food. The music is extremely loud (difficult to have adequate conversation), so consider turning it down a notch. The food was super salty - everyone agreed 6 out of 8 dishes were too salty.

The drinks are amazing! With that being said, the service was so awful and food wasn't worth the price at all. The serving sizes are time when you compare price to what you're actually getting.

Great tiki atmosphere and decor, reservations are definitely recommended.

I would suggest going for a drink and eating else where

So good and cool!!! Very good quality of ambiance only rivaled by its frankly surprising cooking!!! I was not expecting the quality of food I got!! Imagine a 5 star chef restaurant coupled with a Hawaiian Disney like feeling. Amazing. Could go for more dessert options (only 2 when we went) but who cares that's fat me talking!!! Loved the pork belly bowls and the bento box style dessert. Did I forget the decor? Amazing stuff. Drinks? Equally amazing. Highly recommend for any occasion!

As I have said in some other reviews, I can now officially call myself a Tiki Connoisseur. I have been to Tiki bars all over the country and have a tiki collection. The Grass Skirt is the second best Tiki bar I have ever been to (Mai Kai in Florida being the best for the sheer size of it). The decor is top notch and modern. It is the nicest tiki bar I have ever been to and found myself admiring just about everything inside it. Importantly though, it backs that up with delicious tiki drinks of both the older sweet variety and the newer herbal variety. Additionally, it did something that few tiki bars do well - it had delicious food. We got a sampling of many appetizers that were all delicious. Oh, they also have the best Tiki mug now in my collection - it is one of the skulls on their wall in mug form.

As some one who works as a bartender in the industry, this place is the best and worst at the same time. The drinks and bartenders are great but man, does the customer service lack. Tough to ever come back after have some great drinks. Rather false idols.

The vibe is great, the food was delish except the undercooked pork/beef burger. They corrected but the waitress told us it was a personal preference. No undercooked pork. It was fun and we were there 2 hours. Recommend for a small plate and cocktail

One of my fav restaurants in San Diego! Super fun, tropical and perfect for those who enjoy restaurants with a good concept!

I don't go out much anymore, but the Tiki mood at Grass Skirt makes me want to go out every weekend now. Even to PB - which is not really my scene. We had an epic girls night at Grass Skirt and can't wait to go back asap for more Mr. Feathers (one of their delish tiki cocktails) and all of the amazing food!

Out of this world experience. If you want to get out of you mind this is the place. Ask next door on how to enter. Every inch on this restaurant was designed with uniqueness in mind. I wasn't wowed on the food but they have a get Hawaiian beer, and chocolate cake that is delicious. I would go again to wow people that haven't been there before.

I loved the atmosphere of this tiki bar! Features a secret entrance and while we were eating, the lights went down, a drum beat started & the decorative lights flashed for a little entertainment. The service was exceptional and all of the food/drinks we tried were delicious. My only complaint was that it was pretty loud & difficult for conversation at times.

Such a fun environment. This place is not easy to find so if you can't find it off hand you're not the only one. The inside is beautiful and the food was great. We had a group of ten girls we all ordered drinks and only 2 of them were drinkable. None of us sent them back mostly because we have all been servers and our server didnt come back to check on us until she brought the check. The hostesses were kinda rude, the service wasn't good (mainly because she was given too many tables I think).

Loved it!

Killer setup, San Diego s authentic tiki bar! Makes you feel like you just left San Diego for a drink and a nice island style meal. Was hyped on the creative craft cocktails, beers and food. Will be back!

The secret door to the bar is nice. Drinks are decent but it is too loud. The crowd doesn't seem like they would care for good cocktails but rather be there for novality of the place. If you're in PB n want decent tiki drink then sure. But it's PB after all n it is what it is, bar in PB, loud n crowded.

If you're looking for a cool spot in San Diego- this is it. Really cool interactive lights that go off at certain points in the night- cool air cannons that shoot out smoke! It was a very good time and the drinks were incredible. The tipsy tentacle was a favorite at our table. For food, the brussel sprouts are a must! Overall a great spot for a speakeasy vibe

Update: Stopped in for holiday drinks this week and they were amazing! Everything came in cust holiday glasses and the food was amazing again! Plus the manager Sean always stops by to say hello which is so nice. We will defintiely be back soon.

Had such a fun night here with friends! The cocktails are strong, large, and delicious and the small plates are super tasty. Plus the ambiance is really unique and fun. Order a punch bowl while you are there and see what happens, trust me it's very cool!

Great speakeasy. Happy hour is 5-6 and punch bowls are $10 off during that time which is great! The best part of the place is the staff. Chablie was a great server and really helped us out with recommendations.

I went to the Grass Skirt during Christmas and OH MY GOSH-- the Tiki Christmas Brunch was amazing !! The Sippin Santa collection of holiday mugs and specialty cocktails were well priced (around 12$) and the food was delicious ! We had the bao buns, Brussels sprouts, ramen, pancake sandwich and donuts and everything was cooked to perfection!

I highly recommend making a reservation and experiencing this Tiki Speakeasy .

This place is awesome for drink but I always go for the chocolate lava cake bento box. The way each dish And drink is presented is adorable. I would definitely recommend this place if you re visiting or if you re showing visitors around.
