The Grand Cinema is a real gem in Tacoma. I don't know the history of the building but currently it houses at least four small theaters where current mature movies are shown. A lot of movie buffs like this place because in addition to current movies they also show vintage movies every once in a while. I've also heard that on Wednesdays they caption all (?) movies for the hard of hearing. Definitely a more mature crowd comes here. Many of the help is volunteer to keep costs down. You can also purchase a membership that provides a discount on tickets and free parking. Neat place.

I got to watch a movie alone in the theater because I was the only one who bought a ticket for it that night. How cool a private viewing! Any other theater would have said it's not full enough and not show it. But they told me to enjoy!

This place is also amazing because they show films you won't see anywhere else! Wonderful foreign films and indie films!

The Grand is a wonderful local non-profit movie house. Good prices, good movies, "art house" movies, wonderful people/volunteers and a feeling of watching a movie with your friends in your own home.

I love places that give communities a sense of, well, place. The Grand Cinema fits the bill in downtown Tacoma. It shows an eclectic assortment of foreign, independent and local films, with a sprinkling of thoughtful commercial films shown, too. It also serves as a gathering place for community conversations, and offers popcorn with real butter and an assortment of drinks and snacks at reasonable prices. A local gem.

There is no more satisfaction than supporting a local theater. Don't get me wrong, I do love going to Regal and watching my favorite movie on the biggest screen but I like the part I play in my participation in something local.
All the volunteers who work at The Grand are most cheerful and friendly. Get a family membership and you can watch a movie for 8 dollars. I have not yet had a chance to see Monday movie for members at 5 dollars but I soon will. I love watching some of the movies that will only show at the Grand.
And.....don't forget to pick up your free popcorn for members. Add the butter for happiness:) By no means is it tasty or healthy but my husband and I enjoy the tradition. The quality of the picture is not something I will write home about but again the satisfaction of watching something in a local theater makes it okay.
Thank you for all that you do to keep your doors open Grand Cinema!

Cute and quaint theatre! We saw a show there this last weekend and it was great experience. I love the fact that they provide a parking area for theatre customers. The prices are competitive and it s great to support a local business!

This cinema offers interesting movies, but less so than in the past. Current popular selections are the norm, whereas not that many years ago, foreign productions held the screen more often than not. It's clientele are like me, of the older variety, so movies are more easily enjoyed without outbursts of loud talk, or laughter unrelated to the film. Prices are better than they are at a chain theater.

My husband and I became members of The Grand Cinema a few years ago & have never regretted it. The GC is an independent & very unique in design, old/historical movie theatre, which specializes in showing artistic & foreign & independent films vs run-of-the-mill Top Action movies like Marvel films or the Transformer series of action films. Their staff are mainly volunteers & it s obvious they like being there - they are invariably helpful & polite. Their popcorn is some of the best popcorn I ve ever tasted at any movie theatre, or anywhere else for that matter - it s always fresh & hot & they use real butter, vs that disgusting artificial yellow slime junk, you get at most commercial movie theatres. As members, we get a discount on all movies & popcorn, along with close-by parking, which is a nice trade-off for the annual membership fees. The GC is in downtown Tacoma, is easy to find & reminds me of an old, treasured relic from the past.

I had no idea this place existed until i realized it was the closest theatre to me playing the Peanut Butter Falcon. For a non profit volunteer run cinema it was an amazing experience worth going back for.

Great movie theater! Friendly, inviting, and comfortable without the commercialism of the big movie complexes. They provide a good selection of interesting movies. I appreciate having the more varied and broader scope of movies to choose from.

Nice place and the club membership seems like a good deal. Seats were pretty comfortable and it really felt like a community there. Popcorn was quite good and the membership gives you a small popcorn each visit.

A+++

My favorite movie theater in Tacoma. The theaters offer the quaint and slightly disheveled atmosphere one would expect from an indie establishment, with a volunteer staff that genuinely seem to care about the customer experience.

The grand is just what you want in an old style theater. They run great movies if you are into great movies. Their popcorn is the best. It's rewarding to patronize neighborhood cinemas. The Grand is volunteer-run and they do a great job. It's not like a mall theater. It's more like yesteryear and it's fun.

Good selection of hard to find movies. Popcorn was really tasty. Ticket prices were reasonable. Seating and screen were pretty old school.

Overall a positive experience. I recommend going.

What a pleasant experiencefor our first visit to yhe Grand Cinema . From the person who sold us our theater tickets/parking ticket, to the people working the concession, to the ticket taker everyone was so welcoming. Thr theater itself was a wonderful step back in time. The movie was very good. We will certainly go back again.

My only dislike was the staff stopping the film to turn off assistive captioning. I think I was the only one at the screening who wanted the captions to remain, but they would have definitely helped me out so I could fully grasp the film's dialogue/soundtrack/etc. Now that I know they offer assistive devices and have a night where certain films are captioned, I will be inquiring about them before I get to the cinema.
