It amazes me that more people do not know about this place. It is literally a block from campus, and the rates for a room here are amazing for the area. The property is very large and has a number of separate houses. The houses represent old-school Chapel Hill and are very quirky. The houses have been divided into various rooms and suites, with unusual wall designs, oddly angled partitions, etc. I absolutely loved staying here. Joe Teston, the on-site facility manager, is an absolute treasure. He keeps things running, and he is a man of integrity and honor. The Carolina Inn may be a fabulous - and very expensive - place to stay, but this property sits right next to it and costs 1/4 the price. It is truly an undiscovered gem in the heart of Chapel Hill.

Fantastic place! I really enjoyed my 4 months living in the center. The center consists of 7 houses which are all charming and nice to live in. I m grateful that I randomly found the place for my Bachelor university exchange program, close to most departments of the university and Franklin street. But the main thing is not the buildings or the free breakfast nook (which was severely amazing) the main thing is the people! The center is a strong team consisting of Bibb, Joe, Kim, Erin and Jim. All fantastic and very different people. There are often social events at the center for example tailgates before every football game, pumpkin cutting or Halloween celebration. Of cause it is not mandatory to participate, but I can very much recommend it.
If you are looking for a place to stay close to the University in Chapel Hill for a month, a semester or a year, the center of human science is your place.
But the spirit of the center is not the houses or the bigger events, but the everyday life and especially what it is with Joe as your host.
Joe, I cannot explain how much you mean to me during my 4 months in UNC, you really truly do. The father I never expected ;) Residents at the center can always find Joe walking around the center fixing something or helping one of the students with any problem we might have. But he is much more than everyday fixing, he is the guy that calls the hospital and visits his students if one gets hurt. If you feel lost and far from home, have a chat with Joe, he is truly like the father of this place and an incredibly sympathetic guy. And if you don t feel lost, he is your guy, grab a beer, find a seat and listen to one of his great stories, I promise you will not regret.
I really love staying here! Everyone including Joe to Kim are so accommodating and friendly. It is very obvious that they are passionate about the center and passionate about taking care of their guests. The location is great and the houses are very charming. Please note that the place looks MUCH BETTER in person than the photos online! I just wish that they would get rid of the fake flowers. They just look tacky and collect dust. I took them out of my room because I couldn't stand looking at them!
