I volunteer here and although many people walk by and look sad for the dogs, they really shouldn't. The staff is great and the people in Chicago love dogs! Most dogs aren't in the shelter for more than just a couple days. I love volunteering here!

TR his was my first visit there. Very convenient.
I went there to lay my aging, sick pooch(Momo) to rest.
They were very caring and loving about it all. I had my Momo for 18 yr. And I was able to be with her through it all. She was never alone.

Sent my dog here Sunday because I could no longer care for him and they put him down two days after being there said he was aggressive and crying slot and he cry all the time when he's at home in the cage he was
just scared he didn't recognize anybody there he wasn't a puppy he was 4 1/2 years old so he was already use to the people he was raised around there suppose to be a non kill organization they didn't even give him a change to adapt to the shelter life two days after being there really.I should have never taken him there any way they always smell they never clean them dog cages and them digs poop and pee where they eat and sleep and the lady come in there with a water holes and rinse it down the drain. They treat them dogs horribly and I should sue. IF YOU CANT NO LONGER CARE FOR YOUR DOG AND THEY CRY ALOT DO NOT BRING THEM HERE OR THEY WILL PUT THEM DOWN TWO DAYS AFTER BEING THERE!!!!

Love it I love how they want to make sure you are capable of taking care of a dog because it's some people out here who really don't know how to take care of dogs and they just treat them any kind of way so I really like how they like to make sure that you're the right parent for your dog

We love our cat that we got there however they told us he was healthy and he was very very sick, when we came back to to find another cat they wouldn t let us touch any of the cats or play with the cats, not sure why anyone would adopt a kitty that you can t touch or play with first

I will never run out of good things to say about this place. I volunteer on the Dog adopts team and work with the foster program. I've worked in shelters in 4 cities and this is one of the best shelters. The mgmt is amazing and everyone always has a smile on their face, volunteers and staff alike. If you're looking to adopt or foster this is a must stop on your list to check out.

I really like this organization and I think it s better to adopt from here than any sort of breeder. However, the building feels pretty run down and I wish they took better care of cleaning/maintenance.

It s already heartbreaking to see animals in cages but it s worse when there s visible cockroaches scurrying around and trash left out in the rooms

Took our pitty to get neutered and the staff were awesome! He was a bit aggressive since he gets anxious around other dogs but the staff knew what to do and guided us from point A to point B. Overall awesome experience.

We adopted Rocket on Wednesday. We were looking for a different type of dog but when we met him, he was just the nicest thing ever. Needless to say, we went home thinking of nothing but him and picked him up the very next day. Turns out.. you never know who you're going to fall in love with. The staff were EXCELLENT. Rocket, unfortunately, developed a cough which the staff veterinarian (shout out to Dr. Belding!) has been so nice to help us through. I can't believe she told me to keep her up to date and email her whenever!

if you're thinking of getting a new pet, I highly recommend coming here. If you don't find the pet one your first visit, keep coming back because new animals (unfortunately) arrive all the time. The cost was very inexpensive (compared to other shelters) and the staff willing to help you through the transition. I just can't say enough great things.

Thank you for our new addition. We love him!

very fun experience to do yoga with the cats. it was free and the staff was super kind and friendly. and the bonus was that we can play with cats and dogs after the yoga session. I would definitely be checking this place out in the future if I plan to adopt a pet.

This place always gives me a sense of pride every time I go there to visit the dogs. On March 30, 2019 I went there and they told me that all the dogs had been adopted on that day which put a humongous smile on my face.

Really friendly captives and staff. In addition to adoption, the offer medical services such as neutering and spaying of pets. There are three main animal areas - dogs in cages, cats in cages, and then two rooms with free-range cats, where you can pet them and get to know cats that are proven to be sociable enough not to bite the hands that feed them.

This is an interesting place. You can adopt pets from here. Not a lot of selections though. Most of the pets are quite old on the day I was there. And some are quite violent animals. One of the trainers was bitten by a dog. If I were to get a dog as a pet, I might think twice before I get one from here. But YMMV.

As a visitor, I loved that I'm welcome to walk with dogs and hang out with cats, just to give them some care (without being a potential adopter) - it's best to do this when it's less busy!
As a volunteer, I enjoy being around a friendly cohort of staff and volunteers, and value the level/range of involvement and independence volunteers are entrusted with!
As a foster parent, I really appreciate the level of support given by the team and the clinic staff. Fostering with ACS has been rewarding and easy to integrate into my day-to-day life! I feel like it's made me more playful/silly and disciplined too :)
P.S. Current adoptable foster dog is on FB as Adoptable Chicago Doggo!

Full of heartless uneducated people who do not deserve to work with animals.

I was told a friend surrendered their dog and they said within 5 mins of meeting him despite being in a new environment and nervous new people touching him that they decided to put him him down without giving the dog time to adjust? ANTI CRUELTY?! what a joke.

I called to get more information in the dog to take him from the shelter to avoid being put down and they couldn t tell me anything. Waiting for a call back.

DON"T GO THERE!

DON"T GO THERE!
ADOPT FROM PAWS!
It was very disappointing experience. I am a long time owner of two cats. One of my cat passed away, and I decided to adopt a new one, as a companion. I came there with my four year old daughter, and her nanny. I filled the application, gave them my drivers license, and after few minutes, the manager came back telling me that a month ago I applied for a cat in another shelter with a different address.
I told her that I moved and that my current address is on my drivers license, while she gave me a look like I am lying to her, and told me that is hard to believe-and- " I'll stick to my guns".
I asked her- "What do you mean by that?"- to learn, that basically, she is telling me that I am lying to her, so, I had to show her on the internet that I am the owner of the property listed on my drivers license, but this lovely paranoid lady requested: to bring a gas bills or something else.
I was ready to do that, when she made additional request that I need to bring all health charts from my cats vet( I am wondering what should people who never owned a pet before, have to bring?), so I gave her the number of my cats vet and the collar tags from my cats with vaccinations records and vet phone number..,but then she told me that I can't adopt this specific kitten, but only 3-4 year old cat, cause she (the manager) is an expert in cat psychology. I was completely outraged.
Overall, I have been treated very poorly, first, like I came there to do some major scam, or like I am at least some serial killer of the cats. I don't know why did they treat me like this, but I know for sure:
I WILL NEVER EVER CAME BACK ! !

WGN Channel 9 news 8 AM stated there were 6 Siberi...

WGN Channel 9 news 8 AM stated there were 6 Siberian Huskies for adoption & to contact the anti-cruelty society website for more info. I immediately contacted them & it stated on the website they opened at noon. I contacted them on Facebook & sent a message for more info & they replied that adoption begins at noon & is a first come first serve basis. I live in Carpentersville IL & looked up the mileage which was 52 miles one way, 1 he 15 min drive. I quickly left home & battled horrible construction & traffic getting there & nobody was in any line. I was told then only 4 puppies were left since the manager made the decision to give 2 away himself & they had changed their minds & started taking applications at 6 AM & had 7 approved applications with 4 puppies left. I stated that I had just inquired to them 2 hours prior & they never said any of this to me. I was upset since I had driven that far for nothing! The girl at the desk had her speech down stating I am more then welcome to stay till noon to see other puppies or animals when they opened. I specifically went there due to what was stated on the news & there response to my inquiry on Facebook or I never would have went. I was looking specifically for a Siberian Husky to adopt since I already had one & was looking for another. The process they handled this was not fair to me or anyone else who may had showed up at noon to adopt which was clearly stated when the process would take place. They misrepresented themselves to WGN news as well since the manager did favoritism to people he knew. I'm sure my application would of been well approved since I was preapproved through 3 other adoption agencies & have Husky experience. They may provide care to stray animals on need but need to be more open about their process & updated the news team so that people would not be falsely informed! Poor management & special favors will not bring people to their center to adopt!!

This used to be a great place to adopt - friendly and caring staff, efficient and affordable process. Now it is awful! The yard is filthy with excrement and when I began to clean it up myself, they scolded me! The "behaviorist" is arbitrary, authoritarian and seems unfamiliar with the basics of dog socialization.

Next -they had my dog's microchip recorded incorrectly - so she won't be returned to them or to me if she's lost.

When my last dog was in her final days, with a large tumor in her mouth, and needed to be euthanized, the person assisting the vet was so frightened of the dog she terrified her, caused her to panic, so the already traumatic process became a horror.

IF you can afford it, go to PAWS or another HUMANE shelter and don't deal with these fools! This place needs a complete overhaul!

Our family just adopted a beautiful & affection 3yr old cat and was pleased and satisfied with the safety precautions implemented when we picked her up. The staff was friendly upon greeting and the process was very efficient. We've had our kitty for a week and she's just as loving and affection as her bio described her to be! We're thoroughly satisfied and would highly recommend all to consider adopting from here.

I had a fabulous day! I was able to adopt a black lab puppy thanks to the Event sponsored by Subaru. Subaru provided an additional goody/doggie bag with a leash, food bowl, and food scoop. How cool is that? The society gave a light-up leash, too.
Thank you to everyone at this fantastic Organization.!!!

Dishonest and understaffed. Went back on their word on adopting a pet, giving preferential treatment to friends and family. Denied adoption based on a conversation with our vet that never occurred. Called the animal hospital clinic to confront them and they confirmed my suspicion: the employees at the anti-cruelty society are less than honest. Look elsewhere for your pets.

Caring people work at the Anti-Cruelty Society, helping great animals find loving homes.

Dr. Dent aided a dog that we rescued in Honduras. We adopted our very 1st dog from Anti Cruelty Society and she lived til age 13 ... a wonderful German Shepherd!

For over 25 years, our family was complete with formerly homeless dogs. While people joke how lucky our dogs were to find my husband and I, we 100 percent know that every dog we adopted was truly the greatest member of our family.

Check out The Anti-Cruelty Society's fundraising events--always fun nights...and a charity ticket that benefits a great cause!

And make sure to adopt a furry best friend. They are waiting for you!!

I came to pick up my own dog, a dog that I had rehomed to someone 3-4 years ago. The dog was found on the street and the microchip brought her back to me. I was living in a different state. I came in to get her. They treated me as if I had committed a crime. They would not release the dog to me until she was spayed. Originally I was told I could pick her up and pay an approximate $50 fee. So, I had to make two long drives in to finally get her. When I got her, she smelled so bad. She was dirty and both of her eyes were oozing what looked like pus. The intake date on the paperwork said she had been in for two weeks, so I imagine this is how she was warehoused. I was charged $300 to rescue my dog from anti-cruelty. Bad experience. Uncaring.

The low cost spay and neuter clinic waiting area is noisy (because there are many dogs) but the staff is fast and competent and the vets are very good at handling shy cats with minimal emotional trauma to the cat. (It was still my foster cat's worst day ever which, too bad honey no matter kittens for you.) The staff at the surrender area (I had fostered feral kittens on my own.) are also very nice and non judgemental.

This place has loads of pros, but I have a huge complaint. I went to visit Anti-Cruelty Society 3 days ago, went in both cat and dog rooms. The very next day I have flea bites every where. Today my puppy had a adult flea on his ear. Just beware that you can get a flea or two when you walk in. :/

This is an admittedly emotional review...adopted a kitten 1 week ago and 60 hours later had to take him to vet bc he wasn't eating and was breathing rapidly. The little guy passed away on thanksgiving night.

Part of me doesn't want to blame ACS because ultimately shelters are sad sad places, but that poor little kitten caught pneumonia from his stay there.

Dr. Hampton did everything he could, but ultimately the facilities were too poor to keep him from contracting a horrible illness and may have then kept him from getting better.

We all want was is best for the animals, ACS is trying, but they have a lot more work to do to keep the animals safe and happy.

I adopted my German shepherd mix puppy 13 years ago from this place. It was OK. They did a nice job giving her shots and spaded. We adopted her when she was only 7 weeks old. She was beautiful. Thank you Anti-Cruelty Society for allowing us to share 13 beautiful years with my sweet dog. She died recently of bone cancer and I keep her ashes with us.
