We came here once over a year ago and were excited to return, sample some more wines and buy a few bottles. We arrived at 10:20 and made our way into the Cellar Door. We waited in there for a full 10 minutes but nobody showed up to greet or serve us so we left. Pretty disappointing.

Was here for lunch. I don't drink alcohol and was not expecting much from the food here. Boy, was I wrong. We ordered the lamb ribs, duck confit balls, cheese platter and the sweet potato fries. OMG every thing was delicious! And the prices were very reasonable. My wife, who had the wine said it was fantastic as well! After the lunch we spent some time walking around the vineyards.

Very nice and memorable experience!

Great views and enjoyable wines. We stayed at the apartments on the vineyard and thoroughly enjoyed our stay.

There is a lot of history behind the vineyard so be sure to ask about the original owner (Josef Chromy) and new owners.

This was the best wine we tasted when in Tasmania (and we drank a LOT of amazing wine when we were in Tassie)! The man who lead us through our wine tasting was incredibly knowledgeable and informative. Their pinot gris and especially their reserve pinot noir are both incredible wines. Highly recommend stopping in if you're touring Tamar Valley. You will not be disappointed.

I have just read a posting that is 6 years old and as the Tamar Ridge Cellar Door has only been operating 2 years, formally an entirely different business, I think it is totally incorrect.

Tamar Ridge has the largest, most modern Cellar Door in the West Tamar.
Well trained knowledgeable staff, an excellent range of wines.
Offer a winter menu including gourmet pies and summer platters.
Coffee & Tea and panoramic river views from the terrace.

We loved this winery - it felt very authentic. The staff were passionate about the wine and very knowledgable. We also visited Josef Chromy and preferred the wines here. Cheese platter was great and reasonably priced - as were the wines. Try the Chardonnay and sparkling.

Fabulous! Sheila and Sue are a great team and provided knowledge and humour during our tasting. We grabbed a picnic blanket, a few bottles of Pinot Noir and grazed on cheese. It was a really enjoyable afternoon. Highly recommend.

Large professional establishment. Its size and the constant stream of tour buses coming through does make it a touch impersonal, but the staff are friendly and knowledgeable and the sparkling wines are truly award winning.

Had a great wine tasting in a relaxed and welcoming environment. The owner/manager was very knowledgeable and cheerful. My partner doesn't drink and he had a nice experience as well ~ you don't need to drink to enjoy the winery experience here!
We got the $40 charcuterie platter. The truffle oil, pickles and the hot salami were the highlights of the meal!

One of the best cellar door we visited in the Tamar Valley region.
Good wines. Nice environment. Friendly staff.
We had a great time wine tasting there. The staff not only introduce the wine to us, but also recommend devils corner to us which turned out to be a good one. After the wine tasting, we saw a peacock at the garden. It s amazing!!! We dunno it s a wild animal or their pet. You may go there and see if you can meet the amazing creature.

About Tamar Ridge Winery

Tamar Ridge Winery: Crafting the Finest Pinot Noir Wines

Tamar Ridge Winery is a renowned winery located in Tasmania, Australia. The winery is known for its exceptional Pinot Noir wines that are crafted with passion and precision. The team at Tamar Ridge Winery is obsessed with Pinot Noir and believes that their place, soil, and fruit allow them to make some of the most elegant and exciting Pinot on earth.

The History of Tamar Ridge Winery

The history of Tamar Ridge Winery dates back to 1994 when it was established by Josef Chromy. Josef Chromy was a Czechoslovakian immigrant who arrived in Australia in 1950 with nothing but his skills as a butcher. He went on to build one of Australia's largest food companies before turning his attention to wine.

Josef Chromy purchased the Tamar Ridge property in 1988, which had been used for grazing since the early 1800s. He saw the potential for growing grapes on this land due to its unique location near the Tamar River and its ideal climate conditions.

In 1994, Josef Chromy planted his first vines at Tamar Ridge Winery, focusing primarily on Pinot Noir grapes. Over time, he expanded his vineyards and built a state-of-the-art winemaking facility that allowed him to produce some of Tasmania's finest wines.

Today, Tamar Ridge Winery continues Josef Chromy's legacy by crafting exceptional wines that showcase Tasmania's unique terroir.

The Terroir of Tamar Valley

Tasmania's cool climate makes it an ideal location for growing high-quality grapes. The region experiences long daylight hours during summer months which allows grapes to ripen slowly while retaining their natural acidity levels.

At Tamar Valley, the vineyards are situated near the banks of the river which provides excellent drainage while also moderating temperatures during hot summers or cold winters. This combination creates an ideal environment for growing premium quality grapes such as Pinot Noir.

The Soil at Tamar Valley

One key factor that sets Tasmanian wines apart from other regions is their soil composition. At Tamar Valley, there are two primary soil types: red ferrosols (volcanic) and grey sands (sedimentary).

Red ferrosols are rich in iron oxide which gives them their distinctive red coloration while also providing essential nutrients like phosphorus and potassium necessary for grapevine growth. Grey sands have low fertility but provide excellent drainage properties making them perfect for grapevines' root systems.

Together these soils create an environment where vines can thrive without excessive irrigation or fertilization requirements resulting in high-quality fruit production year after year.

Winemaking Philosophy at Tamara Ridge

At Tamara ridge winemakers believe that great wine starts with great fruit; therefore they focus heavily on producing premium quality fruit through sustainable farming practices such as minimal intervention viticulture techniques like hand pruning or canopy management methods like shoot thinning or leaf plucking etc., all aimed towards achieving optimal ripeness levels without compromising quality standards set forth by Tamara ridge team members themselves!

Once harvested each grape cluster undergoes rigorous sorting processes before being gently pressed into juice then fermented using natural yeasts found within each vineyard block itself! This approach ensures maximum flavor expression from every single berry picked off our vines!

Tamara ridge team members take pride not only producing world-class pinots noirs but also ensuring they're made sustainably too! They use solar power energy sources throughout all stages production process reducing carbon footprint significantly!

Wine Varieties Offered by Tamara ridge:

Tamara ridge offers several varieties including Chardonnay Riesling Sauvignon Blanc Gewürztraminer Sparkling Rosé & Shiraz besides flagship variety -Pinot noir-which has won numerous awards over years including gold medals prestigious international competitions around globe!
