T&P Mechanical Services Ltd. did an amazing job fixing my air conditioning unit. The technicians were friendly and knowledgeable. I am extremely satisfied with their service.
Last July (2016) I began to have issues with my heat pump. I ended up contacting T&P Mechanical to inspect the heat pump knowing they have a contract with my condo. They deduced that my compressor had failed and made the recommendation to replace the entire unit as opposed to repairing the original compressor. In retrospect, I wish I would've researched other companies. I followed their recommendation and hired them to install a brand new unit. I paid $7500 cash up front.
On September 15th the old unit was removed and the new one was installed. By early November my thermostat began indicating a red trouble light. Shortly after I found my heat pump failing to expel any heat, I resorted to using my electric fireplace to heat my unit. I had T&P come out and they found the heat pump unit to be completely depleted of refrigerant. They suspected the "schrader" valve to be the leak point, this is where the refrigerant is injected into the unit. They performed the minor repair, refilled the refrigerant, and I figured that solved the problem.
By late February the red trouble light began blinking in and my unit, once again, struggled to heat up. I had T&P perform another inspection on March 14th and they found the refrigerant level to be low. T&P's owner insisted on injecting a leak sealant product which I did not allow. I didn't want a temporary fix being applied to my brand new unit when I knew parts could be obtained under warranty up to a year after installation. I told him that I would like to pursue warrantied parts but instead of accommodating that request he told me I was on my own if I were to go that route. The service man thought perhaps the refrigerant was low due to them failing to top it up correctly when they inspected the unit previously. He topped up the refrigerant again.
By late May I had switched to using my AC and, once again, the red trouble light came in and the unit did not provide cooling whatsoever. T&P arrived on June 8th and the owner gave no other option than to inject leak sealant and top up the refrigerant.
By early July the dreaded red trouble light began blinking in again and the unit was completely unable to provide cooling. The leak sealant actually managed to accelerate the time the unit lost refrigerant. My summer of 2017 was shaping up to be just as sweltering as my 2016 summer, not what I wanted after spending $7500 on a new AC unit. By this point I knew my only option was to completely discontinue any services provided by T&P. I did extensive research and chose a different company to inspect the faulty unit. They came out to my suite on July 7th and within 20 minutes found the leak in my evaporator coils. They went about contacting ClimateMaster for the warrantied parts and installed the new evaporator section on July 20th. My AC has been running perfectly ever since.
It is obvious to me that the employees and owner of T&P Mechanical are incompetent. I feel no sympathy towards them posting a review like this considering how I was treated by the owner. Dealing with him was the worst part of the entire ordeal. I would loathe talking to him because of his downright condescending tone and rude attitude. He always made it seem like the issues I were experiencing were my fault and he did not have any problem telling me that I was on my own when I suggested warranty. I know of at least 8 other residents in my building that have had awful experiences with T&P. I also know of a resident in a different complex who has decided to completely remove their AC after T&P massacred it attempting to service it. Furthermore, I found out that a wiser choice would've been to repair my original compressor instead of installing a new unit. It became apparent that T&P grossly overcharged for the unit and installation. The other company only charges roughly $5000 for the same job and they wouldn't have billed until after the installation. T&P's "truck charge" is also a point of frustration, they already charge too much for their hourly rate not to mention tacking on an extra $50 for every visit. Stay away.
Our Condo is managed by the Core Real Estate Group, and our contractor for the building s HVAC is T&P Mechanical.
So I had to submit a work request through Core, and Core dispatched T&P, to come and fix my heat pumps.
The work was strait-forward. The technician was efficient, came as planned at 8:30AM. He checked both units, topped them up with 2lb of R22 refrigerant (1lb each), used 2 EasySeal to prevent any leaks (1 for each unit), replaced overall 4 plastic caps (similar to tire valve cap) with brass ones. He was out of the door at 10:00AM.
The service report that I signed when the work was finished didn t include any cost or time, as the tech told me it s their common practice (which was filled out later out of my sight). I knew their hourly rate is $128, truck fee is $50 per job. So 1.5 hour of work plus truck fee plus material, I was expecting something around $400 to $500.
The invoice came back with a whopping $905. They put in 3 hours of labour, and charged $429 for parts/material.
I later checked with an HVAC tech, R22 refrigerant costs around $30 per lb (T&P charged $60 per pound). EasySeal costs around $80 each (T&P charged $150 each). Had I known the price they charge, I d have reconsidered my options. And what s with the other 1.5 hour?
When I called T&P, they said 3 hours seems to be reasonable for the work, ignoring the fact that I was home the whole time watching the clock. They said they are a business so the mark-up on parts/material is only fair. I don t even have an issue with the ~90% mark-up, it s the fact that I wasn t informed of the expected cost before hand. The tech later told me he didn t even know the price tag as his boss was in control of all that.
If this is my only problem, I d be happy to go to court with T&P. Since Core dispatched T&P on my behalf, Core paid T&P with our Condo Corp fund once the invoice was sent to them, without me seeing the total cost or asking me about the work quality. Core said it s all in the contract between T&P and our Condo Board, they are just exercising it. But the fact that many others in our building had previous disputes with T&P s charge didn t prompt Core to even mention that I d be owning our Condo Corp after the work is done.
So now T&P got paid $905 and out of the picture. I m owning our Condo Corp for a bill that I didn t even see before payment was made.
