Service was a bit slow. The dinner was delayed for some time. When it started it was a great show. Chev used too much butter but that was a personal preference. It was a very nice place. I would go back.

The steak was delicious as were the scallops and all the fixings that came with them. Our chef was extremely entertaining and the whole experience was a blast.

Would have been five stars, except the salad / miso was pretty basic probably could have just left that off and once seated it took a little longer than expected for the cooking experience to get rolling which had me extra hungry since I'm sitting at the table ready to eat. Will update this review if I go back.

The grill master was fun and engaging. The food is really tasty and the portions are large for the price. It is a little pricy, but the show and food make it worth it. The sushi is amazing here as well. I will definitely be coming back here.

This place is literally everything you would expect. The atmosphere, the service, the food, it is all great. There was not a single dull moment that we had while we were there at the restaurant. From waiting to be seated, to the service, to the food, it was just an amazing experience overall.
The good thing about this place is that, it wasn't just all show. The rice was amazing, the shrimp, steak, the sushi, the soup, it all was flavorful!
obviously, it was a pricey meal but it was definitely worth it.

Waiting didn't bother me. The food was not very tasty but there was plenty. The lady who cooked was from Peru and accent so strong couldn't understand what she was saying. The cost is what bothered me the most. We spent $90 for a regular dinner that didn't impress us much. I will not go back.

Not very impressed- we arrived at restaurant at 5:00
and left after 7- totally ridiculous

-
Our server had an Afro at least 12 in thick and wasn t wearing a hair net - as he carried the salads, his hair was touch the bowls-

He also had quite the attitude -

We will not be back and the quality of food was terrible- the amount of butter used on the fried rice was unimaginable!! I gasped and the chef kept piling it on- a bit excessive

Was hoping for a great experience- from the commercials it looks like a fun place!

But you better have a few hours

I'm not quite sure where to start. Before tonight'...

I'm not quite sure where to start. Before tonight's visit, I absolutely LOVED Sumos. Tonight we went to celebrate our mom's birthday... normally we go to Sumos just because. There have been points since they opened where I was eating there almost weekly. I'd say the longest I've gone without eating Sumos is 60 days. Again, this has been one of my favorite restaurants for ages.

Tonight's visit:
We made reservations at 5:45pm (which I never bother doing but since we were actually celebrating something I wanted to ensure we had a table). The waiter was very friendly and pleasant;however, refills were hard to come by. COMPLETELY forgivable, they were busy on a Saturday evening.

The chef: this is when things took a troubling turn for the worse. I had ordered the Chateau Brianne, a temperamental piece of meat that truly has to be attended to properly. The rest of my family all ordered various cuts of meat, cooked rare (except my nephew and I requested medium). The chef argued with my sister and I telling us my 3 year old nephew's meat should be prepared medium well, we said no, he prefers medium/medium rare. He argued with us for a few minutes.

Next thing I knew I had meat on my plate (it looked pretty rare but I can tolerate rare to medium meat) I took a few bites and then looked around. My mom (the birthday girl) had no steak and then I looked at the grill (assuming hers would be on there) lo and behold it was my Chateau! Burning. I called that to the chefs attention. His remedy was to try and take the meat off my plate *that I had been eating* and give it to my mom. She made it very clear that was unacceptable. The chef walks away. Mom and I are just sitting there. He comes back with a bowl full of disgusting looking chopped up raw meat. He doesn't say a word, grabs my plate and throws the meat I was eating on the grill (that has to be some sort of health code violation) ... meanwhile my Chateau is smoking and burnt. He tosses the burned steak on my plate, throws away the meat I was eating, cleans the table and walks away.

Guess who still had no food? Mom.

She called him back over and said "where's my steak?" He again, didn't say a word but slopped the bowl of cut up steak onto the clean (turned off) grill, no butter no oil just a tiny bit of salt and pepper. He flipped the steak twice tossed it on her plate and walked away.

The meat was no where near rare. It was raw with a tiny hint of brown on each side. He didn't bother cleaning the grill again when he left.

I've never had a ruder person cooking my food at a Japanese restaurant. We were offered nothing but disgusting food to take home and feed to our dogs. Although I'm still debating if I'll even feed it to the dog, I love her too much to put her through the suffering of eating sumos.

My family and I will NOT BE returning. I will make sure to advise friends to stay clear as well.

It's not worth it, you'll be disappointed about the time and money you waste at this place. I had started my affair with Sumos since it is most convenient for me living out in Leon Springs. I'm never taking convenience into consideration again. I'll drive further to be a satisfied customer.

Other good Japanese steak houses in SA:
Tokyo Steak House (a little run down but yummy, their house salad dressing is to die for).

Shogun (again pretty run down but pretty good).

The showmanship is on point here. The staff is friendly and very hands on. It is a great place for a party or even a date night. The yum yum sauce is wickedly yummy and the plum sauce is soooooo good. I had a great time with my husband here. You should totally check it out. This place is most definitely worth the money.

I'm going to start with letting you know that I Love hibachi places, I try to go to as many Hibachi places as I can, and I can honestly say I have lost count to all the hibachi restaurants that I have visited. Knowing this information, let me inform you that this visit to Sumo was the most entertained I have ever been during a Hibachi. I was utterly amazed by the cook's performance and humor. It was not just my cook, but the cook next to ours, he was as equally as entertaining. The food was also very good. While I did not drink during this visit due to being the designated driver, the cooks were very generous with the Sake throughout all the tables. My wife who completely dislikes shrimp loves the shrimp here!!!
I do not want to ruin the show by telling you what my cook did different compared to other hibachi places, but be prepared to thoroughly be entertained and engaged into the cooking experiance/show. I highly recommend this place, and here are my ratings:

Entertainmemt: 5 out of 5
Food: 4 out of 5
Cleanliness: 3.5 out of 5
Staffing:5 out of 5

Overall a 4.5 out 5 for me I truly hope you have as much fun and like the food as much as I did when you visit this location.
Enjoy

Tons of fun! Definitely on the pricey side but absolutely delicious! Reservations aren't required but if you don't want to wait you should make one! Waited at the bar for our seats and it wasn't bad, slow bar service though

Before I was even able to realize I was food poisoned, my experience here was a terrible one. My experience at this restaurant was one of the worst in San Antonio. Then when I returned home, I was so sick because my seafood was not cooked correctly. Save your money and go somewhere else.

Food was great, but the price was double what some others are. Shouldn't have to pay extra for fried rice when most people that eats hibachi wants fried rice. Also should be able to substitute extra rice for vegetables. What costs you more? It's definitely not rice.

My family and I had decent experiences at this restaurant many, many years ago- but goodness, it's quite horrible now. Went there for my last birthday just a few months back now, and I hope to never have the displeasure of doing so again.
The food was ridiculously overpriced for the quality; I felt quite ashamed at the amount that was spent for such horrible food! I ordered hibachi. The steak and chicken were tough and dry, the shrimp was tasteless. The fried rice was little more than rice and oil- no veggies and hardly any egg. The side vegetables were undercooked. My fiance tried some of the sushi, but was unimpressed in general.
The service itself wasn't lacking; both our chef and our waiter were quite pleasant, but sadly it didn't make up for the low-quality food, or the high prices..

I always try to look on the bright side, but it was particularly difficult this time. Sorry, Sumo, but we won't be going back.

My brother and I really love this place! We have come here twice for our birthdays. The staff pays attention very well. If we want a refill they'll bring it out right away. We always get the shrimp with the fried rice. The whole meal comes with salad first. Not a fan mostly because of the ginger sauce. Its to much ginger and just to much sauce in general. When the guy comes to cook he makes us veggies which consist of zucchini and onions. I really like them and im picky on my veggies. Then we got our fried rice with shrimp and the shrimp is good but my favorite dish is the fried rice. I'm in LOVE with it lol. Its that good! Since it was our b-day we both got vanilla ice cream and whipped cream right next to it with chocolate syrup drizzled on top. Really good! They also take your photo with family and give you a copy. The family next to us also did it with a graduate. So we love this place!!!

These guys know how to do it right. Service is fast and friendly, with enough personality to add to the ambiance. The food is consistently very good and the seafood is fresh. Best Hibachi in Texas!

Tonight was our first time eating here.....and our last. The cleanliness of the entire restaurant was in need of some serious attention. It made me nervous about the quality of the food that would be cooked for us. We have been to many habaci grills and have never been seated at a grill with 10 people before. 8 would have been crowded, so 10 was very uncomfortable. The service was beyond awful, but they don't have to worry about earning their tip because it is automatically included in your bill. The chef was great, but after an hour and a half wait for her, I was past the point of tired and had no desire to eat my $35 plate of unseasoned food. They need some help.....

We had stopped on the way to pick up my son from camp. Part of eating at a Hibachi steakhouse is the show. We were not disappointed. The show was outstanding. The food was comparable to other places I have been. Make sure you have time for this place. There is a bit of a wait and the it was more expensive than other hibachi steakhouses I have been to.

The experience was good, been there a few times and i was happy, Thao our cook was awesome, thank you, only reason i didn't give 5 starts was obviously because of the wait, reservation was for 8:45 and we didn't get things going until almost 10pm, but they really tried and I'm thankful for the gesture that they gave us free drinks on the house for the wait , other than that you guys at sumo's did an excellent job, be seeing you again very soon

From the moment of entry, it was so unwelcoming; from the Host to the Waitstaff. I decided to continue into our visit there, but after major communication issues with ordering, they finally brought our drinks out and saying they were incredibly watered down is a gross understatement! We decided then to get up and take our business to Whataburger! It was a major bonus when I ended up feeding my entire family of 7, for the price of one dinner at Sumo!

- Reservation was pointless, had 1900 reservation, arrived at 1850 and told to sit down, asked about table at 1915 and 1930 after other walkin parties were let in before, front desk staff was very curt.
- Waitress was very infrequent, took 45 minutes to come for orders when party was ready after 10 minutes
- Food wasn't prepped/served until 2100

+ Bathroom very sanitary, pleasant scent, no odor*
+ Very pleasant chef, only reason restaurant is 2 stars not 1 star.

Edit: order -> odor

Went with my wife for anniversary we had reservations at 7:15 we re told they only had four chefs and we would have to wait we ordered some wine and it was such a pitiful amount ( about an 1/8 of a glass ) For 9 bucks we sent it back and no one tried to rectify the situation after waiting for a chef at the table for an hour we finally got up and left and went to pappadeaux and had a great experience
