Made reservation at 8:45pm we were sat promptly but did not have a hibachi chef for an hour and fifteen minutes. We did not start eating until past 10pm. The food was subpar and expensive. Many other Japanese restaurants I would recommend trying in San Antonio over Sumo s.

Very warm, like the air conditioning wasn't working well. The entertainment factor was there while the chef was cooking our meal. The tempura that came out of the kitchen was lacking any flavor other than grease.

I had the impression that I was going to get a good review of this place, but it was not like that, the star is for the cook who was seen later after he started giving his show on the grill, and he was kind and I miss him You win, but even with reservation and the place almost alone, they left us waiting for a little while and then to take us to the most cornered table and in the past of all the waiters and cooks, after a while they offered us drinks that I can't help but warn you about. Do not ask for combinations, it seems adulterated alcohol, and we asked for a type of drink and they only brought us one with orange juice and alcohol, nothing to see what the menu said. Sorry for giving bad recommendation but they do have many areas of opportunity to improve. Of the food, what is delicious is the cut of meat just and the costs are greatly exaggerated for the quantities they serve. Not a place I want to go back to

Very disappointed in the management at this restau...

Very disappointed in the management at this restaurant. We chose to come here on New Years day to celebrate the new year and a birthday. No message on the website nor a message posted on the door that the restaurant would be closed for the holiday. Half dozen other potential customers in the parking lot waiting for them to open at normal time. Called the telephone number, no answering machine, and no closed for the holiday message. Poor communication. Bad first impression left with this would-be first time customer.

I've tried "NUMEROUS" times to dine in at this restaurant & it's one excuse from the other!
"Oh we've changed our hours, but haven't changed it on our google page."
"We aren't taking any reservations at this time!"

We made a reservation at 8:45. Sat right down and received amazing service! From the front hostess, to our waiter Allan, to the manger Rachel, and our WONDERFUL cook Matthew! It was a busy night and we did wait about an hour and half to get our cook. Allan was amazing keeping us updated, filling our drinks, and checking in on us. RACHEL the manger came to us and apologized for the long wait and the whole table received free shots for fun! She was beyond amazing and gave us the best costumer service I ve ever received eating at sumo. We are returning customers and this time was the best so far even having to Wait! When Matthew came (our cook) the first thing he did was introduce himself and apologized for the long wait. He definitely made up for it by entertaining us and cooking our food with passion. During our food was being cooked the OWNER of sumo David came and made sure we were okay and carried a conversation with us.
Even though we waited and didn t leave until about 11:30pm. Everyone and I mean EVERYONE in sumo was kind and amazing to us.

Never in my life been in such a filthy restaurant. Dust and webs hanging from the ceiling. Wait wasnt long. Got to table and found soapy water on the grill that wasn't turned on. Water on the floor and smell of Clorox. I have never walked out of a restaurant until that day. I even went to the hostess desk to tell them we were leaving but no one was ever there so after 10 more mins I just left. After reading a menu with prices averaging from 25 to 30 dollars you would half expect the place to look decent.

It was my first time coming here and I absolutely LOVED IT! Sure it is a bit pricey and sure you do have to wait a bit even with a reservation (if you want to eat around 7:30, make a reservation at 6:30), but it was SO worth it! When I made the reservation online I added a note saying my husband and I were celebrating our 2nd Anniversary; as soon as they seated us, they brought a complimentary bottle of sparkling wine (we had 3 options to choose from). Before the show started, they brought us mushroom miso soup and later a salad, both good.
The show on the hibachi grill was awesome! Our cook (Andrew) was both funny and REALLY skilled. He kept us entertained the whole time. We had the Hibachi grilled shrimp and the The Alamo (shrimp and rib-eye steak), and chicken fried rice. It was DELICIOUS. We ate ourselves miserable, and there was still food on my plate. Just when we finished and were about to ask for the check, they brought us tempura ice cream as complimentary dessert!! I mean, talk about great service. So, bottomline, it is a bit pricey and you will have to wait, but it is TOTALLY WORTH IT for a special occasion like birthdays, anniversaries, etc. I recommend it 100% and will surely be back :)

This was our most enjoyable dining experience to date! Tommy was our chef the evening of 1-19-19. He had our table laughing hysterically the whole time. The food was absolutely delicious, the portions were more than filling and our drinks never dried up. You need to try this place!!

I bought a Travelzoo deal for two and wish I hadn't bothered. Upon arrival there was an overpowering and weird smell in the front waiting area. The server sat us right in the back of the restaurant even though the place was empty at 6pm on a Friday. The decor and odor really needs fixing here - it's like a Restaurant Impossible joint in desperate need of a makeover.

For starters, the food was extremely overpriced, and the seating was horrible. For the price we spent on our food ($140), you would expect it to be better quality and bigger quantity size than what it was. The food was notably salty, the portions were strikingly small, and lastly, the chef couldn t communicate with us at all. Our requests were not met on multiple occasions because of the communication barrier with the chef. Additionally, we were seated in the back of the restaurant right next to the cleaning materials (mop buckets/Brooms/Dirty pile of dishes). It felt utterly unsanitary. There was plenty of space to have us seated elsewhere, but for some strange reason, they were determined to place us in the back of the restaurant where the traffic was high and uncomfortable/dirty. I literally had to kill spiders at the table we were seated at. The experience oval all was subpar and not up to standards. I would not recommend dining here for the reasons aforementioned unnecessary high prices, service/seating, and lastly, the quality of the actual food. I feel cheated out of money and time. We will never be going back. If there was a rating lower I would definitely give it to this place. I also forgot to add they will add $20 worth of tips to you tab automatically, its just not worth it! Save yourself the time and money!

Don't bother with making a reservation for this place...they seat whomever they want regardless if you had a reservation and another guest did not. We waited 40 minutes outside of our reservation and still did not get seated...meedless to say we walked out. They stated they were understaffed...not once did they inform us about the lack of adequate service staff...i would have never waited period...

Unfortunately we were served by a chef with no people skills and no desire to entertain as obviously the other chefs did. The food was on point but to pay nearly $200.00 for a party of four while your expectation is to get a show as well, and not get one, is downright disappointing!

Service was inconsistent. Our cook was funny in the beginning, but stopped tricks & jokes midway. All tables around us were having shrimp thrown to them & many more tricks than we experienced. Had to remind cook about fried rice missing chicken & that steak ordered was regular menu not kids. We also told them we were celebrating a birthday & nothing but a "oh, happy birthday!" Three other tables around us got sung happy birthday by their servers & cook. My daughter (birthday girl) said she loved her food but wishes we would have gotten a different cook.

While there I noticed a cook towards the back of the restaurant cooking without a mask (There was one person at their table, but since she was there all night I assumed the cook was just making to-go orders).

It was a great experience. We were kinda upset that there was no sushi on the menu but luckily we stayed. Tommy was a good cook and made the experience worthwhile. Stevie the waiter was very good as well. Would definitely recommend and eat there again.

The only part that makes it 4 instead of 5 stars is the wait. Once the chef came to the grill. It was really good! The place itself could take more care in sweeping the floor in between table events. I think he said his name was either Tim or Tom. But instagram was chef X? Anyhow, he is very talented.

I enjoyed this place and found the food to be delicious. However I won't say it was amazing. Like everyone on here even with reservations the wait is long and even longer once you get seated watching the chef and table next you eating and you are starving! They need more chefs. Yes it is pricey but an overall nice experience you pay for. HOWEVER I will tell you to check your bill CLOSELY! THEY ALREADY ADD GRATUITY TO YOUR CHECK! I'm surprised no one else has mentioned this. This is something that they should tell you PRIOR to deciding to dine or not. So you are paying whether service was good or not. This is for any party over 2 people. I had 4 people, 2 adults and 2 kids, our gratuity was almost $20!! The long long wait did not justify that tip amount. That is why they get 4 stars from me. I don't take kindly to people just taking my money!! I'm not saying that I wouldn't return again but maybe just a party of 2, or we split the bill and hopefully no gratuity added. BEWARE!!

Absolutely wonderful environment and service. Chef D took great care of us. Not only were his cooking skills on point, but his overall attitude and demeanor showed how passionate he is about what he does and it's wonderful. Place was packed on a Saturday night and they still got us in with just a few minute wait time. Drinks were refilled without ever having to ask and the manager checked in at the end of our meal to ensure we enjoyed our experience. The prices are on the high end, but the food and service is well worth it! Will definitely be back soon.

Great experience, as food is prepared at your table, & the display of fire just before the preparation is exciting but it seems a little dangerous. We were a large party of close to 20 people & were well served & chefs were engaging. Prices are expensive, so be prepared, but a good experience.

Worst Hibachi I have ever experienced. Well first off the menu items are marked up 25% more than the average you would pay. Lets talk about the chef I had here. He was obviously brand new. He was not very well trained which is obvious from the beginning. Towards the end as I was waiting on my delicious looking filet mignon, he tried a trick and dropped the spatula on the floor. He quickly grabbed it up and tried to wipe it off on his shirt like he succeeded in the five second rule game. Then he continued cooking our food with it. Everyone at the table was shocked. A staff member saw it and quickly came out and relieved him. started cooking new food for those still waiting. Figured a refund or half price would be given but no. had to pay full price still. I will never go back or recommend to friends. Plenty of other great places in San Antonio.

Haven't been here in a while. Half of our food was given to the other couple that were sharing. The cook left shells of egg after being told there were shell pieces. We had to say several times what we ordered. Plus, the food wasn't even flavorful. Never going back.

We walked in at 9:05 but were refused service because apparently they stop seating at 9 even though the closing sign clearly states 9:30pm. The place was already empty and there was only one family being served. This is a noncustomer friendly practice and if management is OK with deterring new clientele then we'll continue to take our business somewhere else.

Service was marginal, sat at Sushi bar was all but ignored unless we asked for something. Albacore tuna tasted funky. Parking lot very unsafe, my window was broken out and a guitar stolen. All of the security cameras are pointed to the front door not parking to take care of the customers. Attitude toward the situation was totally ambiguous. I won't be going back again EVER !!

Food is very expensive but what you're really paying for is the show. They cook your food right in front of you in a very entertaining way - say jokes, throw food right into your mouth. A lot of flames. One of the chefs does funny pranks.

Food was great SERVICE WAS HORRIBLE (getting drinks, soups, bill, etc.) not the chief who cooked; he was great! Look at this fishy stuff with the tab.... handed me my bill for two people about $94 and showed the correct for a tip (before tax) then they ran the card and shows the tip amount after tax..... anyways there is a better place by 281/1604 that was off the wall and half the price! This place is a 50/50 on a recommendation. Very very very pricey.

Restaurant was freezing everyone was eating with coats on asked multiple times if the would do something about and were told to wait for the cook it will get hot. Well it never did. I payed $122 to freeze and be miserable. The cook over cooked all the food and took over an hour for him to show and start cooking, over all it was the worst experience I have had at a restaurant lately.

Wow! Never I thought I would eat at the same restaurant three times in a row and have three different moments that made three fantastic memories. Sushi Chef KC is pearl hidden among the rocks. HE created free-style dishes suited to my wife's taste that were remarkable. Patrick the Bar Manager had the right spirits for the right taste and Rachel was attentive to ensuring everyone was receiving a stellar experience. To those who, like I, visit San Antonio for your child's graduation from the Air Force BMT, you will not be let down for the 15 min drive from the Base!

Horrible service! Waitress was rude the waiters are just horrible and slow. The chef was really cool and the food was good but not worth $30 a plate! You get very little food! The soup supposedly "homemade" is too salty. I didnt like this place , 1st and last time coming here! It just sucks! Dont watse your money or time here! Instead go to "el tacotote" which is down the street its mexican not Japanese but its amazing there! You will not regrey it. Go there instead! You can feed 2-4 people with $30 ,instead of $30 for a small plate each! Avoid this place trust me!!!!

My first visit! The Hibachi, Rachel was Fantastic! Rachel not only had skills on the grill. Everything was delicious! Rachel was able to carry a conversation while discovering our groups likes and dislikes about foods being prepared. I will be returning for the dining experience! Great customer service!

Today on 2/24/21 my wife and I had dinner once we were sat at the table it took and hr for the cook to start cookin food was unflavored we arrived at restaurant 1915 pm
During the dinner an accident happen at parking lot Mazda vehicle impacted 3 car parked in front of the restaurant 2 couples sharing table with us were affected.
And notify 30 min after the incident it was a hit an run.
Personnel from restaurant never call 911 negligence letting the driver run away no waitress were inside because they were just watching at parking lot without taking any action.
Sumo quality has gone down badly.
Never to come back for the poor quality of the food and service.
Even though they make the customers pay for they food after all lack of customer service

I'm going to start with letting you know that I Love hibachi places, I try to go to as many Hibachi places as I can, and I can honestly say I have lost count to all the hibachi restaurants that I have visited. Knowing this information, let me inform you that this visit to Sumo was the most entertained I have ever been during a Hibachi. I was utterly amazed by the cook's performance and humor. It was not just my cook, but the cook next to ours, he was as equally as entertaining. The food was also very good. While I did not drink during this visit due to being the designated driver, the cooks were very generous with the Sake throughout all the tables. My wife who completely dislikes shrimp loves the shrimp here!!!
I do not want to ruin the show by telling you what my cook did different compared to other hibachi places, but be prepared to thoroughly be entertained and engaged into the cooking experiance/show. I highly recommend this place, and here are my ratings:

Entertainmemt: 5 out of 5
Food: 4 out of 5
Cleanliness: 3.5 out of 5
Staffing:5 out of 5

Overall a 4.5 out 5 for me I truly hope you have as much fun and like the food as much as I did when you visit this location.

Chef was entertaining but didn't make my food like I ordered. Asked for medium well and was very well done. Plus never gave me my steamed rice. Paid $200 plus $27 gratuity for three meals and one sushi roll that were ok but was expecting better quality and flavor.

We had a great chef for our group. The fried rice is outstanding. Chicken and shrimp is a great choice. If you are a normal size adult you can share one meal ( it costs 10 dollars extra but you get your own soup and salad) just to reiterate, get the fried rice.
