One of the best venues in Chicago. Groundbreaking and legendary work. I still give it five stars, even if I wish they were more Avant Gard in their approach to what they stage. Like almost all big art institutions they're a little trapped in the post-modern narrative.

The company of Steppenwolf is world renown and many of the actors who have gone on to fame still return. That being said, the shows are often infuriating. You may leave with no understanding of why this show was selected and wonder why you continue going year after year. If you want to see tomorrows stars or catch famous names on stage, this is the place. But be warned that the great acting is there, but the show may be off the wall.

Steppenwolf Theatre has long been a Chicago treasure. Originally founded by some of the most well known actors in Hollywood, like John Mahoney and Joan Allen, the theatre thrives today producing original works by ensemble members like Tracey Lutts' "August: Osage County". Steppenwolf recently opened the front bar with coffee and refreshments by Goddess and the Grocer as well as a full service bar!

Always a great place to see a show. The one thing that you have to keep in mind is that this is not your typical theatre. The plays generally veer toward the experimental. Read a synopsis first and make sure that the play you're going to fits what you're looking for. That being said the acting is usually superb and the performances tend to be very thought provoking.

Love Steppenwolf's thought provoking productions and how every season has a theme. They even have opportnities to debrief the shows with the cast and production team which is really cool way to experience theater.

Ask me about joining the Steppenwolf Auxiliary Council, I have been a member for the past three years and it is a great organization for those interested in supporting the arts. Each April we put on the Red or White Ball as a fundraiser benefitting Steppenwolf for Young Adults.

After several years of going to New York City and enjoying the theater I often left thinking the best play I saw originated at Steppenwolf in Chicago. So now I save the money I would spend on airfare and expensive hotels and just take a train to Chicago a few times a year and I'm never disappointed. Everyone should make Steppenwolf theater a regular stop on their immersion into the best of what theater can offer to life.

There are two theaters in the building, one upstairs and one downstairs, which is the larger of the two. There isn't a bad seat in either of them. Downstairs there is a gift store that sells books and play- related items, the Front Bar, where beverages and a limited food menu are available, and a coffee counter. Segregated and unisex bathrooms are offered. The upstairs is smaller and more intimate, with a counter/bar that offers offers hot and cold beverages and snacks. Beverages may be taken into the theaters.
The Steppenwolf Theater offers world-class plays and actors, many of whom are internationally known from theater, television, and movies. This is not "Broadway in Chicago", but offers contemporary and classic plays that are complex, thought-provoking, and beautifully staged and performed.
Go to the Steppenwolf to be challenged. Many nights post play discussions are held to let the intelligent and thoughtful audience work through and express their insights into, and questions about, the material covered in the plays.

I had read rave reviews of "Familiar" in the New Yorker and NY Times, so I bought main floor tickets and took my 19-year-old granddaughter to the play last night. Unfortunately, the actors are not using mics and it was difficult to impossible to hear the dialogue when they were turned away from the stage. We were in the 6th row and even my granddaughter missed some lines.
Again, I am forced to order the printed script to find out about the play's big reveal. This has happened before - The Flick, for example. I'm sure the cast last night was excellent, but I wish I could have heard them.

This is the theatre you hear about if you're out of town, visiting. And for good reason. With history dating back to Gary Sinise and John Malkovich, the seeds had been planted for the type of theatre Chicago is known for. It's the first one I knew about when I first moved here. The last performance I saw was with John Mahoney from Frasier TV show and it was so awesome to see him perform on stage! My seats weren't the best, but you could still feel the electricity in the air, and that's what theatre is all about. I didn't really get any food or drink, so I can't comment on that, but hanging out in the lobby with the cast of characters which are theatregoers is always enjoyable. If it's your thing, You should check out their season and pick out a show that grabs you. It's something you should try at least once.

I picked up season tickets for $100, which is insane considering this is a world-class production company. They are the "preview saver series" seats, which are in the balcony and all shows are pre-opening night. The theater is intimate enough that balcony seating gives a great view, there's no squinting required and voices carry well.

I can't imagine why anyone in Chicago wouldn't have season tickets here.

One of Chicago's finest theaters. Their performances are incredible, and the theaters are great. Perfect location as well, with so much to do both before and after the show. Chicago has such a great theater community, and the Steppenwolf is a real hidden gem. Go see a show here now!

The theater itself is perfectly fine. The attendants are very helpful and don't mind answering guest's questions and pointing them or, in some cases, escorting them to their seating. The play we saw, "BLKS" was well done/produced or directed or whatever, but it wasn't a very good play. The name was so general that it could've been about anything, but it turned out to be about these 3 women and their relationship drama-- not, like, the Black Experience (far more multifaceted and interesting), which the general title might lead you to believe. In a nutshell, it was melodramatic and disappointing. We'd still go see something at the Steppenwolf theater, just not that play, again.

You can bring drinks they sell in the lobby into the theater to drink during the show. They also have a nice looking bar/lounge area that I haven't tried but was packed before the show. My dad bought my tickets here 2 seasons in a row and I love going.

Excellent plays in a great space. The Red card is a great deal for folks in their 20s. I've had a couple of issues with losing cards, needing to change tickets, etc and the customer service has always been impeccable.
