The first academic year at Istanbul University began with the Hagia Sophia Church, which was converted into a mosque after the conquest of Istanbul, and the Zairek Church adjacent to Hagia Sophia, and these two churches are the basic structural roots of Istanbul University, and it was also taught, in addition to religious sciences, some worldly sciences such as space science. Istanbul University continued to teach previous educational materials until July 21, 1846, when the Ottoman Empire decided after this date to add new technical fields to the fields taught at the university, with the aim of developing the Ottoman state s bureaucratic and military technical capabilities. At that time, Abdul Majid II transformed Istanbul University into a larger educational headquarters under the name House of Arts that included several buildings.
