St Kilda Gatehouse: Creating Spaces of Belonging and Safety for Women
St Kilda Gatehouse is a non-profit organization that provides spaces of belonging and safety for women involved in street-based sex work in St Kilda, as well as young women and girls affected by sexual exploitation. The organization was founded in 1989 by a group of volunteers who were concerned about the welfare of women working on the streets.
The mission of St Kilda Gatehouse is to create spaces where individuals can experience social inclusion with respect and unconditional acceptance. The organization recognizes that many of those they support are tackling complex issues such as addiction, homelessness, mental illness, poverty, domestic violence, abuse, and social isolation. Therefore, they provide a range of services to help these individuals overcome their challenges.
One of the key services provided by St Kilda Gatehouse is outreach support. This involves going out onto the streets to meet with women involved in street-based sex work. Outreach workers offer practical assistance such as food and clothing vouchers, harm reduction supplies like condoms and clean needles, referrals to health services or legal advice if needed.
In addition to outreach support on the streets, St Kilda Gatehouse also operates a drop-in center where women can access a range of services including counseling sessions with trained professionals who specialize in trauma recovery; art therapy classes; yoga classes; cooking classes; computer access for job searching or education purposes; shower facilities; laundry facilities; hairdressing services etc.
The drop-in center provides an opportunity for women to connect with others who have similar experiences while also receiving practical assistance that can help them move towards greater stability in their lives.
Another important service provided by St Kilda Gatehouse is their residential program which offers safe accommodation for up to six months at a time. This program is designed specifically for young women aged 16-25 who are experiencing homelessness or at risk of homelessness due to sexual exploitation or other factors such as family breakdowns or mental health issues.
During their stay at the residential program facility called "The Cottage", residents receive intensive case management support from experienced staff members who help them develop life skills like budgeting money effectively or finding employment opportunities so they can become more independent once they leave The Cottage.
St Kilda Gatehouse also runs an education program called "Project Respect" which aims to raise awareness about sexual exploitation among young people aged 12-25 years old through school presentations workshops etc., Project Respect educates young people about healthy relationships boundaries consent etc., so that they are better equipped when it comes time make decisions around sexuality later on life
Overall St Kilda Gatehouse has been providing essential support services since its inception over three decades ago now. They have helped countless numbers vulnerable individuals find safety belonging connection hope dignity purpose again after experiencing some very difficult times indeed
