St. HOPE: Revitalizing Oak Park and Leveling the Educational Playing Field

St. HOPE is a non-profit organization that has been working tirelessly to revitalize Oak Park, a historically underserved neighborhood in Sacramento, California. Founded in 1989 by former NBA player Kevin Johnson, St. HOPE has grown into a multifaceted organization that focuses on education, economic development, and community empowerment.

While St. HOPE’s primary focus remains on leveling the educational playing field for all students, we also strive to revitalize Oak Park through various initiatives such as real estate development, small business support, and community engagement programs.

Education is at the heart of St. HOPE’s mission. We believe that every child deserves access to high-quality education regardless of their background or zip code. To achieve this goal, we operate several schools in the Oak Park area including PS7 Elementary School and Sacramento Charter High School.

Our schools are designed to provide students with a rigorous academic curriculum as well as opportunities for personal growth and leadership development. We believe that education should not only prepare students for college but also equip them with the skills they need to succeed in life.

In addition to our schools, St. HOPE also offers after-school programs such as summer camps and tutoring services to help students reach their full potential.

But our work doesn’t stop at education alone – we recognize that economic development is crucial for creating sustainable change in underserved communities like Oak Park.

To this end, St.HOPE has invested heavily in real estate development projects throughout the neighborhood including The Guild Theater – an iconic venue which was once home to jazz legends like Duke Ellington – now serves as an anchor institution for arts & culture events within Sacramento's urban core; 40 Acres Art Gallery - showcasing local artists' works; Underground Books - an independent bookstore featuring African American literature; Esther's park - A public space where people can gather together safely while enjoying nature & art installations; The Upper Room Dining Hall - A restaurant serving delicious food made from locally sourced ingredients while providing job training opportunities for young adults from under-resourced backgrounds among others.

We have also provided support for small businesses through our Business Development Center which offers resources such as mentorship programs and access to capital so entrepreneurs can start or grow their businesses within Oak Park's commercial corridors.

Finally yet importantly- Community engagement is another key aspect of our work at St.HOPE because we believe that true change comes from within communities themselves rather than being imposed upon them by outsiders who may not understand their unique needs or challenges fully.

Through various initiatives such as block parties & festivals (e.g., "OakParkFirst Fridays"), volunteer opportunities (e.g., "HOPECrew"), youth leadership programs (e.g., "OakParkLeadership Academy") among others- we aim at building strong relationships between residents & organizations working towards common goals of revitalizing oak park while fostering social cohesion among diverse groups living there.
