I ve been living in the apartments 518 e.bellevue ave in San Mateo for 5 years and let me tell you the service of the manager there does not know how to do a managers job they shouldn t even be a manager. I no longer live there because there were insects in the house and I ve been letting the manager know about it. She told me to let her know next week on the week day because weekends she s off. I told her that it s important for her to take a look at it because I have kids under the age 4 years and I wanted to make sure it s safe for them to be living there. So she took a look and I didn t get a response almost two weeks later and she told me it was dust. I was so upset and really angry because I have videos where you can actually see the insects move. I ve been having these insects for about two months and tried to get rid of them because the manager wouldn t contact us to see what s the next step. I had to throw away clothes shoes furniture ect... so now I had to start from the bottom again buying new furniture and other things I needed for the house and part that I m going to be charged for the furniture I threw and other belongings as well. I recommend to everyone please don t move in to those apartments the manager doesn t let you live in peace all you get is a neighbor complaint about every little thing you do and it s actually her that gets bothered

Cleaned my apartment for the last few days and had a noon walkthrough set up for today to release it back to manager and she was a no show. Called her, maintenance answering service and corporate. No answer but for answering service for maintenance issues. Corporates phone goes no where. I have all my evidence so when I go to court. They just screwed with the wrong person!!! 30 years of renting and this by far was the WORST experience ever. Run run run fast and far away from renting from these crooks!!!!!

Just echoing what's already been said. Our manager was Clare O'Leary.

Clare has been disrespectful, dishonest, and generally unethical from the start. We had many noise issues with our upstairs neighbors being very loud at all hours of the night. Clare complained that she felt "attacked" when we asked her about the noise issues.

When shelter in place began for Santa Clara, Clare sent over a team of plumbers to our apartment without notifying us in advance. We didn't have any plumbing issues so this came as a surprise. Because we are cautious with COVID 19, we told the team of plumbers we hadn't been aware of such an appointment and we weren't comfortable having them inside so they politely left. Clare then snapped at my husband over the phone saying "we can come in whenever we want" when he informed her of our rights as renters, she exclaimed he was threatening her.

We notified Clare we were moving out on August 6th, she replied on August 7th. I immediately replied and left her a voicemail per her instructions. Then she didn't reply until August 8th saying she couldn't count the email and digitally signed PDF of our departure and needed it delivered in person.

Then of course...no security deposit despite my husband and I doing an intense deep clean.

They scammed me on security deposit. I paid $1100 upfront as security, spent only three months in the apartment, and followed all their guidelines about cleaning etc. and spent 2 days cleaning the whole place. At the inspection, the resident manager Janet was "perfectly happy" with the cleanliness and state of the apartment. She told us the carpet cleaning will be around $120 (even though the carpet was clean) and I was still ok with that. But now when I got a check of only $38 a month after moving out, I am of course upset. They have apparently charged $500+ for painting, $120 for carpet, $98 for utility bills which I have already paid, and other stuff. I emailed the resident manager who simply said she doesn't deal with this and I should mail to the company at some PO Box. It's ridiculous.

This company does not care about their tenants, soundproofing in the building is non existant. I honestly would give it zero stars if I could. I tried to resolve an ongoing problem for one year and finally ended up moving in vain. They don't honor terms set in their lease! Couldn't take a proper shower because water coming out of the shower was so scant. Mold was also an issue. As a goodbye present they charged us twice for water. I don't recommend living in any of their properties! I remember not even wanting to be home. I'm so glad I don't live their anymore!

Worst experience ever. This business should be investigated at every level. The Spieker kids have ruined the Spieker reputation. If the IRS, state of California and the various city councils they operate in and every housing agency did any due diligence, audits or investigations they'd be shut down if not imprisoned for their blatant abuses of tenants and landlord tenant laws. I can only imagine what their books look like. Papa Ned raised a band of thieves and liars. Hang your head down low for the shame of who you're children became. A decent property attorney could get a big and easy class action suit together. And someone should! They are a big company with hundreds of people they have ripped off who would sign up, testify and share their stories. I'd do it for a dime. Big bank accounts equal big awards.
