I started giving blood after my son was killed a little over 3 yrs ago. The medics game him lots of blood and other blood cells in attempts to revive him. It was then that I had made the decision to donate when I could to help save others.

My first time donating was at a drive in schertz the second at this location at the pavilion both of which were great experiences. After being diagnosed with lupus I took a break from donations. Last month I was called and mind your I am called often to request my donation as I am O+. I happily agreed. Upon putting the address in my GPS I was informed that it was about a 40 minute drive and wasn t happy but I had already made the commitment, so I went. I waited an hr and. I one called me. I finally got up and asked and was told that she had called my name, well I never heard it over the music going in the room, and I m sure I wasn t called more than once, I would ve heard my name after a few times. So I left, I wasn t wanting to get stuck in traffic on my way home. So a few days later I get another call and again asking for donation, so I said yes but made sure that the person understood I was no longer willing to drive 40 min to make a donation. She happily scheduled me an appointment for today near me. I received an email a few days ago reminding me of the upcoming appointment, I received an email this morning as well as a text about today s appointment, I even filled out the forms. I get there and see no vans like I usually see at blood drives, so I go in and ask and they tell me that they had a drive a few days ago. I arranged my whole day around this appointment and I m extremely upset. I called right away and the lady was apologetic and so I told her to just remove me from any call or email list they have me on. I should not have to fight so hard to help save people. If more people are going through similar situations seems like that has got to be partially the reason blood donations are running in short supply. Super disappointed in the South Texas blood and tissue center in how they handle certain things. If I had been called I d be fine but to create an appointment and then not be there at all. Ridiculous.

About 4 months ago my son tried to give blood but the guy missed his vein. He seemed really nervous and told my son sorry but I missed your vein and to come back in 2 weeks. Ridiculous to turn someone away when O blood type is very much needed. Then today my other son tried to give convalescent plasma and supposedly the tubes in the machine were mixed up. They ended up taking blood from him for 45 MINUTES! Of course he looked pale and out of energy. Totally unacceptable and disappointing.

Visited this location today and had a good experience, although I had to wait quite a while during the check in, the technician who assisted me was awesome, Yolanda was very skilled and made me fell safe at all times while I was there considering the global health crisis going on. After triage the procedure was very smooth and done quickly. The staff was wearing masks and most of them had also face shields on all the time. Kudos to all of them for keep saving lives daily, true heroes.

5 gallon donor here, spread out over some years, starting with the San Pedro location, later the downtown location, then the new I-10 building...I feel horrible writing this, but I stopped donating long ago. You get a very cold, unwelcome feeling from the time you walk in the door, and the live interview process crossed the line of personal questions to being outright offensive E.g. "Are you donating just to get a free AIDS test?".

Since the written part of the interview takes a good 20 minutes to complete, I inquired if that form be available to fill out online, to print and have ready when I came in, but was told no. This may have changed since the last time I visited. If not, please consider it. (I was told it needs to be filled out the day of the donation)

I'm not expecting any fanfare when I come in, but I'm also not expecting the staffs' reaction to me as if I'm a street person approaching them to ask for spare change. It must be a horrible place to work; for the people there, front and back, to act so unhappy/burned out.

The telephone recruiters' voicemail messages sound 50% bill collector, 50% telemarketer. They could use some lessons from the army recruiter that used to call me, he sounded nice and fun! In fact, maybe try firing half your recruiting staff and hire people from the hospitality industry; to make people feel welcome and shield them from the disgruntled employees?

I am all for saving lives and have been donating blood for years. I just recently started to donate platelets because a technician couldn't find my vein and I had to wait to donate blood. I felt great because I had super high numbers and thought to do my part for those in need. However, that has changed due to the last time I went to donate. I had previously had the same tech and hoped it would be her again. I was being helped by another lady who I could tell was acting agitated. I should have trusted my instincts and asked for someone else. I've never had such a horrible experience in my 15 plus years of donating. She made me bleed and worst of all I cant donate now for another two months. I was livid. There should be technicians who can work with all types of people, not just the ones with perfect conditions. I'm upset that I had two people mess up my chances to donate and help during this shortage.
