Soulforce: Reclaiming Our Spirits from Weaponized Religion

Soulforce is a non-profit organization that aims to end religion-based violence against marginalized people. The organization was founded in 1998 by Mel White, a former ghostwriter for prominent evangelical leaders who came out as gay and was subsequently shunned by the religious community. Soulforce's mission is to reclaim the spiritual heritage of queer people and challenge the misuse of religion as a tool of oppression.

The organization's work is rooted in the belief that all people are created equal and deserve to be treated with dignity and respect. However, many religious institutions have historically used their power to discriminate against LGBTQ+ individuals, women, people of color, and other marginalized groups. Soulforce seeks to challenge these harmful practices through education, advocacy, and direct action.

One of Soulforce's most notable campaigns is its Equality Ride program. This program sends teams of young activists on bus tours across the United States to visit Christian colleges and universities with anti-LGBTQ+ policies. The goal is to engage in dialogue with students, faculty members, and administrators about the harm caused by these policies and advocate for change.

Soulforce also offers training programs for activists who want to learn how to effectively challenge religious-based discrimination in their communities. These programs include workshops on nonviolent resistance strategies, intersectionality training, spiritual resilience building exercises.

In addition to its advocacy work within Christian communities, Soulforce also works closely with other faith traditions such as Judaism Islam Buddhism Hinduism Sikhism etc., recognizing that all religions have been weaponized at some point or another throughout history.

Soulforce has been recognized for its groundbreaking work in promoting LGBTQ+ rights within faith communities. In 2005 it received an award from GLAAD (Gay & Lesbian Alliance Against Defamation) for "Outstanding Documentary" for its film "This Is What Love In Action Looks Like," which chronicled one young man's experience with a controversial ex-gay program.

Soulforce has also been featured in numerous media outlets, including The New York Times, CNN, and NPR. Its work has inspired countless individuals to take action against religious-based discrimination and reclaim their spiritual heritage.

In conclusion, Soulforce is an organization that is doing important work to end religion-based violence against marginalized people. Through its advocacy campaigns, training programs, and direct action initiatives it is challenging harmful practices within faith communities and promoting equality for all.
