Injured during first lesson. A dangerous place to learn. - My wife had her first ski lesson here a few weeks ago (20th January 2019). She was doing everything right - weight forward, feet apart, knees slightly bent etc, when the tip of one of her skis caught on the matting and threw her forward (which you wouldn't think is even possible). She landed on her chest and was quite shaken up, but continued with the lesson. When we got home that evening, her neck and upper back were hurting and she was in pain when breathing. She went to minor injuries the next day and was told she had whiplash and a fractured Xiphoid process (lower part of the sternum). She was in a lot of pain for a couple of weeks afterwards, and this incident has unfortunately put her off skiing (at least for this year) which has meant we have abandoned plans for our family ski holiday. :-(
I'm a keen skier, and I am cross with myself for suggesting that she learn on a dry slope, as an injury like this could not have happened on snow. We only went to Snowtrax because Hemel was fully booked that weekend. If you are thinking of learning to ski or snowboard in the UK, I would strongly recommend going to one of the indoor snow domes at either Milton Keynes or Hemel Hempstead. I learned at Hemel a few years ago, and even though it is a little more expensive, the quality of instruction is far better and the lessons are longer, so much better value for money... and you're less likely to hurt yourself.
