Shut Yo Mouf Entertainment Review

The atmosphere was pleasant. The waitstaff was friendly, courteous and attentive and the food was awesome! The lemonade was fresh squeezed and deliciously sweet. I had a veggie plate with yams, mac & cheese collard greens and cornbread. All I can say is Mama said "Shut Yo Mouth" That's food that's good for your soul!

My family and I visited SYM last Sunday for the first time for the buffet. Usually, I don't expect much from a buffet, but WOW, every protein and side dish I tried was absolutely amazing. My favorites were the collard greens, pork chops, chicken, and cabbage. You can definitely taste the love that was put into making each dish. Furthermore, I LOVE supporting Black owned businesses, especially FAMILY owned Black businesses. The owner, Katrine, was absolutely lovely. Her daughter was our server and she was very friendly, attentive, and accommodating. We were a bit nervous to eat at a buffet with the pandemic, but Shut Yo Mouf practices all safety protocols, including using disposable tableware and utensils, spacing tables apart at a safe distance, and ensuring that all customers use gloves and masks while at the buffet station. Upon reading negative reviews about long wait times, different closing times, problems with service, food delivery, etc.....customers need to realize that.. 1) this is a family-owned restaurant, not a drive-thru at McDonald's, so patience is a virtue & well worth the wait for amazing soul food. 2) With the pandemic, hours may fluctuate, so if you are driving a far distance to get here, a simple phone call would alleviate any trouble. 3) All of the negative reviews about customer service can be solved through COMMUNICATION. Low on water? Ask the server for a refill. Need more napkins? Ask the server for more napkins. Simple as that. 4) Bad food delivery service is not the restaurant's fault, but the delivery service you ordered from. I felt compelled to type this review because Katrine & her family are truly some of the most genuine, friendly, hardworking people we've come across in the Petersburg area. My 3 year old nephew, who is super shy, gave Katrine a hug out of the blue when we were leaving. In conclusion, SYM is a MUST if you are looking to chow down on some delicious soul food!!! Can't wait to go back to try different dishes off of the menu! Now shut yo' mouf & go eat!

Delicious food, fresh salads and friendly atmosphere

We waited an hour for our food and the place was basically empty. Our table had no light and after placing our order, the waitress kept coming back saying they were out of everything, then they charged a 18% gratuity for only two people. The bill was not worth it and the whole experience ruined by birthday. I will never go back!!!!! We tried to support our own, just didn't work.

It was OK. Limited items on the buffet. Food was good. Wasn't worth the price though.

My mom and I are from D.C., and a neighbor recommended that we come here to eat, and that everything was good. I had a trout dinner with cabbage and a baked sweet potato, and cornbread. Baby with a glass of tea. Let me tell you, your going to love the food, and also the atmosphere is so inviting. We will be back.

Best soul food in Virginia hands down. The name even says it and you know when you at the table talking while eating dinner what does your mother tell you?

Prob. one of the worst services I ve ever had at restaurant! The waitress was nice, but she was very slow & did not provide any napkins or utensils after bringing food to the table. Also had to wait a while for a refill on my drink.

There was a lot of things on the Menu we could not order because they ran out. No Seafood, No Mac & cheese, No collard greens, No green beans, No yams & no Ribs. The resultant closes at 8 we got there at 6:30!!

My Aunt had to get her food to go because by the time they brought out her plate, everyone else had finished their food!! Every time the waitress came to the table it was to tell us they had ran out of something we already ordered!!

The resultant seems like a really nice family restaurant but our experience there was terrible!! Prob. will not come back again.

I truly enjoy going there to eat the food is always fresh smells great and God knows it tastes even better I can't wait till after church on Sundays when I'm off to go and get something to eat from there and if I'm at work I asked my lady to please pick me up a plate yes that's a great place for family

Nothing like advertised at all! Highly disappointed Drove forty five minutes walked in viewed the buffet and surroundings and walked out, not cleanand tidy and food literally looked unrecognizable to pictures shown.

I went there on my lunch break and got a meatloaf dinner with macaroni and cheese and mashed potatoes and gravy for the sides. The meatloaf was over cooked and it was a small piece and the macaroni and cheese wasn t good at all.

Recommended by coworker but bad all around. Service was very slow, waited 20 minutes to get order taken, only 4 tables full when we arrived with one waitress. Got there 1:07 pm and told server we were on our lunch hour. Was served drinks and my glass of ice had 1/4 glass of water so I asked for another glass to empty out so I can pour can soda. By 2:10 pm food still not ready so we asked to have lunch boxed to go. We were only 3 blocks away and food was terrible, waffles were soggy, chicken breast rubbery and small about 2"x4" (about the size of a double french fry), the cabbage was hard, the cornbread was burnt and the wings had no flavor. My one star is only because the french fries were good. Regretfully won't be going back there or referring anyone, unless just wanting french fries and can soda.

This is a buffet style soul food resteraunt. When we went for dinner, the adult dinners were $15 and the kid's (4) was $9. The meatballs are delicious and spicy, the mashed potatoes had chunks, like they should, and the collards were seasoned to perfection. They also had ribs, pork, crispy fried chicken, fish with cornbread breading, rolls, mac and cheese (yum!), yams, rolls, fruit, and kitchen appetizer items. Overall, the experience was personable and I highly recommend to all, whether local, avid foodie, or wanderer, such as myself.

Wonderful food and gracious service. Ms. Katrine is truly a delight. Definitely will be going back.

- This is the second time where I had an excessive wait time. 30 mns just for 3 pieces of cornbread and couldn't even have the common curiosity to advise me that it was just going into the oven when I got there. I had to ask for my money back and thats when she finally told me. Ive had food ( side items ) and nothing about it tasted it fresh. Very disappointed in the lack of service and the quality of food

An evening ride to Petersburg ended with dinner at Shut Yo Mouf Soulfood and everything from the food to the atmosphere to the hospitality was EXCELLENT!! This Family-run business, it's inviting atmosphere, and comfort down-home cooking is a must and we're ready to return for Sunday buffet!!!

Nice setting, but wait time is awful, first time visiting not really impressed the food was ok, greens were bitter, chicken was ok, spaghetti was horrible, and the sweet tea wasn t good at all...place has alot of potential to be great just needs tweaking in order for the business to grow

Buffet was nearly empty after church today. No bread, no dessert. Did somebody say they had chitterlings? I think I was at the wrong restaurant.

The Food was VERY Good, the hospitality was on point, you felt like you were at a relative's home. The owner is both warm and friendly and I will add inspirational. I do intend on becoming a regular.

We enjoyed the restaurant very much. This was our second time there. Love the atmosphere and the food was very good and everything was hot and I Love that. The food may take sometime coming out but well worth the wait. My family and I will definitely be back and will bring all our family and friends. Our dinner consist of: Husband had the Fried Chicken Dinner , our son had the Bacon CheeseBurger and fries and I had the Veggie Plate and our Appetizer were the Fried Green Tomatoes. Loved it! Home cooked meal in restaurant setting! The owner talks to you like family! You can't get that type of treatment or service at chain resturants!

I only had the lunch chicken wings tasted like wings no big deal..When I read menu it stated 4 wings etc. I got 3..and when I asked about what the menu said they cooked another wing and came out to read the lunch menu themselves ...?...i don't know... so much to look at while waitng,for food pictures mirrors flowers like a museum...lol

The food at this restaurant is good. The first few times, the service was also good however, my last visit wasn't as good as the previous ones. The service can be slow at times. If you're looking for good southern soul food, this is the place for that. The prices are reasonable which makes it just that much better. I would recommend this restaurant.

This restaurant is the one I like best. I visit plenty of restaurants but to this one I constantly return again and again. The crew is very professional and the cuisine they cook is so yummy. I would always prefer to have a decent meal here. I recommend this place with pleasure.

Excellent Soul Food and excellent customer service. My first time visiting was today when they first opened and i have to say i will return for more of this comfort food. This is a great way to have a lil taste of southern hospitality.

My family went there for Mother's Day. First our waitress completely abandoned us and a different waitress had to come. Then it took 30 minutes to receive drinks then an hour to receive food that did not follow what the menu said. The food was poorly made, something I could've easily created in my own kitchen. The waitresses didn't come back asking if we wanted drinks either. When we asked for the check, it took yet another hour and it was during this point that we just left the money and went home. The bill wasn't even correct according to their menu prices and all together it was a poor experience. My mother was disappointed and i felt bad taking her to a place in which the customers are not their priority.

I came to shut yo mouf because I heard about how great the food was here. And let me tell you, they definitely live up to the rumors. As soon as I walked in my waiter, Jeremiah M., welcomed me with a warm smile and delightful conversation. After being seated I ordered my drink and food which came out at an surprisingly fast speed for it all to be so fresh and good. Overall this place is AMAZING!!!

Love this place. The staff are so friendly. I almost felt like I was at my mom's house with family.
I got all this food. On Sunday it's a buffet for $14.95 but if you only get a to-go plate you pay by the pound. My plate was over 5lbs as if I'm greedy. The food is delicious. It's hard to find southern cuisine that tastes good. This would be the best I've had so far!
Long story short, I'll be visiting again.

I went in today and placed a carry out order. I had to wait 34 minute for my food. I just don't understand why it would take that long.
Because of this I'm decreasing my rating.

I took my daughter here for a late lunch. I heard great things and they didn't disappoint. The server was very nice, restaurant itself had a very nice look, and the food was amazing! I ordered shrimp grits my daughter ordered ribs. Mac n cheese was just like my moms! This will be a normal spot for me from now on.

Beautiful atmosphere, R&B music very relaxing and inviting. Service great! Food definitely needs improvement! We came in on a Saturday at noon, we were the only one there. Look on the menu to order fish (only whiting and trout was advertised) ask the waitress do you have catfish? She said yes, "maybe a couple of pieces". She checked and then say, we have it but it will be the same price as the trout. I asked for how many, she one. I said one piece of catfish for $15.00!!!! plus, the manager said it would be a large piece. I ordered the whiting and my husband ordered the catfish. When we got the food..... the catfish, was a small whole piece with bone and fins attached, needless to say no breading on it to call it fried. My trout was cooked so hard, I thought it was catfish. Could not enjoy it. The greens was great to me, but the Mac and cheese was old and dry. My husband cabbage was decent and the yams was out of the can. We love to support black businesses, I would not want to take away from this restaurant, but the food greatly needs alot of improvements if they call themselves "shut yo mouf soul food".

The food was great.. what I had.. went early on Sunday when they opened as we were told they get busy. They were not prepared when they opened. Had to wait about 10 or 15 minutes for the buffet to be ready. We sat for about an hour and a half and had to ask for desserts. The piece of pie that I had was maybe 1/4 of an inch wide. Will not go back on Sundays again as I didn't feel that I got all of what my money was supposed to pay for.

They have a long way to go to get 5 stars . But there Mac&cheese tasted like mommas and there corn bread was very good. That got them a higher rating in my book.

The interior was gorgeous! The food was pretty good. Seasoning on the smothered pork chops was a little strong for my taste, but that's just me. I just don't care for highly seasoned food. Service was super slow. They appeared to be a little understaffed for the time of day. It took a while to get the check and to finally check out. I would definitely give them another try.

So I fell in love my first time eating here. The food is still good but i was very disappointed when I paid $14 for a pork chop dinner and my pork chops looked as though they were purchased at dollar tree. I've had a $14 pork chop dinner in Petersburg and my meal was a reflection of the price. I made the lady aware and I was just looked like as if, "what do you want me to do". Cool, I'll just order chicken wings.... The prices should really be a reflection of the food. The quality, the taste and the portion. For the skimp pork chops, two sides and cornbread, I'd been better off getting a $5 kids meal. I really don't feel like the lady who assist me meant any harm but proper training is a must.

I ordered pork chops and they were not tender . My husband got the fried lake trout which tasted old or maybe had been frozen too long. The bake potato was so small I could not believe it. We were so excited to visit and drove 30 minutes in traffic. Because we came on Thursday maybe they were not prepared. Many people we talk to before we went came on a Saturday or Sunday and they gave a positive response. It was my birthday and I am still disappointed . The atmosphere was wonderful but the wait time was a bit long. The service was good but I personally wouldn't recommend this restaurant.

So,on Sunday I took the Amtrak from Union station Washington Dc to Petersburg Virginia where my brother picked me up and he took me to your restaurant shut your mouth he raved about how good the food was and I must say I had an awesome time all the food was delicious I met the owner she spend time with me sharing with how the business got started how well they're doing and it was just an awesome experience everybody complete staff was awesome I highly highly recommend shut your mouth.

The taste of the food really lives up to the name of the restaraunt. I live in southeast N.C. and I will definitely visit again.
