Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman established "Shilpakala Academy" on 19th February 1974 with the national interest in developing a creative humanitarian nation. Bangladesh Shilpakala Academy is the only national institute for the development of art and culture. Under the law of National Parliament, Shilpakala Academy was recognized for the purpose of creating a cultural impact by preserving and maintaining historical and cultural activities all over the country and was initiated after tearing down the former Pakistan Art Council in 1974.

Bangladesh Shilpakala Academy orchestrate their operations in six different sectors, they are:

1. Theatre and film department
2. Music, dancing and recital department
3. Fine arts and photography department
4. Training department
5. Research & publishing department
6 .Production department

There are also two more sub sectors:

1. Finance, Accounts and planning department
2. Maintenance sub department

There are six directors for these departments. The secretary will look after administrative affairs and finance and accounting. Highest executive officer of the academy is the Managing Director. He is appointed by the government and is in charge of the overall administrative responsibilities.

Promotion and practice of Drama, cinema, music, dancing, recital, fine arts and photography are the main objectives of the organization. Alongside this the organization also works on talent nurturing of artists and performers, supporting to improve their skills, researching on different fields of art and culture, inspiring to criticize and think creatively, arranging workshops on different media of culture, arranging seminars and discussion meetings, making arrangements for short and long term higher levels of training, monthly allowance for insolvent artists and arranging one time support, creating opportunities for promising future artists, arranging competitions different subjects and rewarding performing artists, sending special cultural group abroad to represent Bangladeshi culture, giving Shilpakala award for extra ordinary contribution in different sectors of culture and arts and publishing books, periodicals and identity awareness memorials etc.

It holds the bangladeshi culture more than anywhere.it is a great place for visiting and enjoying the parts of our own culture delightfully. i personally prefer this for enjoying stage drama performance and street drama performance. this place also shows our previous generation of cultural sides.and many more

Bangladesh Shilpakala Academy is the national cultural center of Bangladesh under the patronage of the state. This academy conducts activities under the Ministry of Culture. Various cultural programs are conducted in it. There are food shops, from tea-coffee to the latest fast food type food. If you want to get out of the art, there are food shops nearby.

My friend lives in the opposite of this place ..this place is good for arts ,drama shows.. never went to see any of these but I once.or.twice went there to use their washroom

Bangladesh Shilpakala Academy (Bengali: ; National Academy of Fine and Performing Arts) is the principal state-sponsored national cultural center of Bangladesh.

It is the national academy of fine and performing arts. The academy was established through an act of Parliament in 1974 as a statutory organization under the Ministry of Cultural Affairs. But subsequently the Act of 1974 of Bangladesh Shilpakala Academy was amended through a new act of Parliament in 1989. The academy is headed by a Director General.[1]

The overall direction for the functioning of the academy is provided by an Executive Council (Shilpakala Academy Parishad) headed by the Minister in charge of the Ministry of Cultural Affairs. The Director General of the academy is responsible for its administration. He is also responsible for the implementation of decisions taken by the council. He is assisted in his work by an executive committee which is elected by the Council.

The duties and responsibilities of the academy include promotion of the arts and national culture and creation of necessary facilities for their development. The activities of the academy also include organizing workshops, seminars, discussion meetings, short-term specialized trainings, providing scholarships and financial grants for talented artists, organizing competitions in the various field of fine and performing arts.
