I went to the main office of Shelter Inc in Concord, thinking that I would be helped, or at least to fill out an application. Well, none of that happened at all, as they have no one there to take in person applications. The receptionist just handed me a business card with a phone number on it and said, You have to call this number first, and someone will call you back. She really didn't want to be bothered at all, and when I told her that I had called and left a voice mail, and had not received a phone call she was even more irritated. She then told me that she was sure that they called me because that is how they get their Federal Funding, which is with how many contacts they have a month, or better yet, from calling and sometimes leaving a voice mail message. She checked and someone told her that yes, I did get a call--but I sure didn't get any message that someone called me, nor to tell me to try calling back again. So I had to call one more time, and someone did call me back pretty fast--but only to tell me that someone else needed to call me too! That person finally did call me, leaving me a voice mail--I could barely understand the message as the language was so bad! And when she finally got back to me today, she asked a few questions, again very bad phone mannerism as I could not understand her well. She asked about income/I said gross or net? She asked about my rent/how many months behind etc--and then she says Ok, I need to check it out with the system and see what happens?? When she got back on the phone again, I understood her to say OK, well you don't make enough money! But when I questioned her about it, she could not explain in any manner that I could understand her. Then she says well, you can call the number 211---and that's when I could not contain myself any longer and I hung up. These people are horrible!!! They don't help anyone!! They made things really stress full and I already am stressing with terminal illness/possibility of being evicted etc.??

They literally want you to get evicted to help you...

They literally want you to get evicted to help you, that s not helping you tags keeping you in a system where it s a lot harder to find a new place, and Provide places where it s really inconvenient and not safe. I have been transparent with all finances and meet criteria and proven to be able to maintain and have timeline documentation of incoming finance after the presumed help. I was denied because of the Veteran manager stated that I cannot maintain that she does not feel like I can after aha she d for the information I have given.

While they do return your call, they said all of their assisted/low income housing is full and their waiting list is so full they have closed it. Garbage!! Might as well say that on their website and answering machine.

I've been getting the wrong info back & forth for 5yrs from them! They're unprofessional to say the least, always behind, and they're not trying to end homelessness or I wouldn't still be after 5yrs! Also, I'm disabled and that should've put me ahead on one of their two wait lists by now? They said they'll pay your move-in , but w/o a low income place, your move- in will also be your exit, and I no they've had places that remained empty for awhile, so they tell you what they want, when they want, and quick to say no funds? But go to the Concord locations where their buildings are better than some of the apts they manage and they drive expensive cars! maybe that's why they've been saying for over two yrs- no funds, but yet they're still employed and not homeless! Thinking about going to the Area Head or filing a suit against them for what they've done, or in this case what they have not done!

They are currently helping me with housing. It has been such a blessing receiving guidance from case managers and help during the holidays. I came to them as a pregnant single woman who desperately needed a place for me and my baby. I stayed in one of their shelters, went into transitional housing and then permanent housing. I am grateful for their support when I didn't have much from my family.
