the temple is beautiful bright, and its a great place to meditate and to just be. and of course to chat with the monks, and yes to practice kata, i loved it!!! it was the best place to ever be, if anything i would want to live there. i miss the temple as well in Hangzhou China...its over 1000 years old!!! i love the american dude...matthew polly he was awesome to meet and to see fight.

Shaolin Temple is famous all over the world for Shaolin Kung Fu, and is known as "the first brake in the world".

Shaolin Temple is one part of the Songshan Scenic Area, which is divided into three zones. I only had the time to explore the Shaolin Temple zone, which I suspect might be the most popular because of its association with the martial arts through the Bruce Lee film of that name.
I visited during a Kungfu festival time and hence throughout the site there were various school and other teams all practising. However, there is little overt mention of the film other than the use of its theme tune as part of the short free demonstration provided by the temple. This features primarily younger trainees, and their mastery of the body is indeed remarkable.
Hence the site is primarily a series of Buddhist Temples that follows the classical pattern of such temples. The Shaolin Temple itself was originally built in 495AD during the Taihe period of the Northern Wei Dynasty. However, what is actually seen are reconstructed Temples due to past fires, and indeed some reconstruction continues, and the Zen Buddhist Ancestor Hall was rest closed when I was there. There are within the zone five main attractions the Temples themselves, the Pagoda Forest, the free Shaolin Kongfu show which is about 30 minutes duration and finally the training grounds where you will observe the Monks training in the martial arts. The fifth attraction is the landscape itself dominate by the Song Mountain.
The main Temple zone is about 25 to 30 minutes walk from the main entry but if you prefer you can take an electric buggy ride for about $6. Information is easily available via Wi-Fi and QR codes, and you can also reserve a personal guide. English speaking guides are available, and worth obtaining if you are able in my experience as you can then ask follow up questions. The entrance fee was 100 RMB. There are many forest walks available.
If you are really interested in the martial arts there are many schools in the area and short course of two week duration are readily available at both the Temple and private schools found in the city of Shaolin.
Is it worth visiting? Well, it is a Buddhist Temple and these are many through China. At nearby Wehu there is a major temple in the public park there. So the value lies perhaps in the martial arts associations, and the fitness level of the trainees is remarkable to behold.

Beautiful temple and grounds. 13 year old son is devotee of Martial Arts and very much wanted to visit here. Exciting that to see monks and to see that young soon to be Senseis are still training here. The 'Kung Fu' show was interesting but somehow seemed to cheapen the deeper meaning of the art of Martial Arts. Just my opinion. But it did not detract from the experience and my son loved every moment at the Temple.
