Selfridges Group: Imagining and Creating a Sustainable Future for Retail
Selfridges Group is a collective of international department stores that has been in the retail industry for over 100 years. The company was founded by Harry Gordon Selfridge, an American entrepreneur who revolutionized the way people shopped in London. Today, Selfridges Group operates four iconic department stores across the UK and Ireland: Selfridges & Co., Brown Thomas, Arnotts, and de Bijenkorf.
At Selfridges Group, we believe that retail can be a force for good. We exist to imagine and create a sustainable future for retail – one that is built on innovation, creativity, and responsibility. Our mission is to inspire our customers with exceptional products and experiences while minimizing our impact on the environment.
Our commitment to sustainability is reflected in everything we do – from the products we sell to the way we operate our stores. We are constantly looking for ways to reduce waste, conserve energy, and promote ethical practices throughout our supply chain.
One of our key initiatives is Project Earth – a five-year plan to transform Selfridges into the world's most sustainable department store. Through this project, we are working towards three ambitious goals:
1) To ensure that 100% of our products are responsibly sourced or certified by 2025.
2) To achieve net-zero carbon emissions across our operations by 2050.
3) To become fully circular with zero-waste policies by 2025.
To achieve these goals, we are partnering with leading organizations such as WWF-UK and The Centre for Sustainable Fashion at London College of Fashion. We are also collaborating with innovative brands like Stella McCartney and Patagonia who share our vision of creating a more sustainable future.
In addition to Project Earth, we have implemented several other sustainability initiatives across all four of our department stores:
1) Recycling programs: We have introduced recycling bins throughout all our stores to encourage customers and employees to recycle waste.
2) Sustainable packaging: We have reduced our use of single-use plastics and introduced more sustainable packaging options for our products.
3) Energy-efficient lighting: We have installed LED lighting throughout our stores, reducing energy consumption by up to 70%.
4) Ethical sourcing: We work closely with suppliers to ensure that all products sold in our stores are ethically sourced and produced.
At Selfridges Group, we believe that sustainability is not just a trend – it's a responsibility. By taking bold action towards a more sustainable future, we hope to inspire other retailers and businesses around the world to do the same. Join us on this journey towards a better tomorrow.
