Wolf Lake State Fish Hatchery is a hidden gem. They have a nice quality, though small, interpretive center. They offer free public tours of the fish hatchery. There is a stocked pond that swarms with fish when you drop in food. And they have regularly scheduled family-oriented programs. Plus, the grounds are beautiful with an old abandoned mill on the property.

This is a local treasure! Walk through interactive displays, learn about fish, feed giant fish in the fish pond and walk the trails. Admission is free and this place is much nicer than you would expect. In the summer they have free fishing events for kids where they provide everything including very eager fish. Between this and the nature center Kalamazoo has a lot of nature themed attractions

This is a great place to take the family or to have a date with your significant other.
The grounds are well kept around the buildings and paths. There are wildlife areas and trails to walk through and explore. It is also a great place to take school children for a field trip. The large ponds (small lakes) are totally FULL of fish to look at, learn about, and enjoy. They have areas and certain times when people can fish (catch and release), otherwise fishing is strictly prohibited.
Inside the main building there are many things to learn about, admire, and enjoy. Some things are a hands on experience.
There are wonderful exhibits inside, and with totally beautiful craftsmanship. There are also mounted fish (taxidermy) that have earned a state record(s). Each has a plaque that notes why they are recognized as such. They are very interesting and intriguing (they gave me a sense of awe when I saw them).
Being here will not be a waste of your time if you are looking for anything as/or like the above things written about that you (or your class) would like to learn and grow from intellectually.
If you have any questions they will be glad to give you the best answer that they can. And when you are at the fish hatchery any questions that you may have may be adequately and fully answered by the knowledgeable person(s) at the fish hatchery Help Desk.

It's a great place to take the fam and be outdoors learn about our fish...the main attraction is probably the sturgeon..its an amazing fish, they are a snap shot of what prehistoric fish looked like and they are huge. If you are lucky when you walk out to feed the other fish, you will see one, but if not there is a stuffed sturgeon hanging from a wall inside the hatchery interpretive center that's an example of how long and big they can get..plus you can walk around and learn about other fish species found in michigan waterways..so take a trip to wolf lake hatchery, it's cheap, educational and fun if you liked your visit, donate a couple a bucks and support a healthy fish population for our state

An AWESOME place to walk around, weather the visitors center is open or closed. Bring some quarters to feed the show pond (Very close to the parking lot!!). Spend some time, walk the trails, see the other ponds, the turtles, the birds, everything. A good way to enjoy some fresh air and kill some time!

Really nicely done public outreach and education. Standing tours offered for free every day. Just show up. The tour was really nicely arranged and the guide was surprisingly well spoken and knowledgeable about the state, our water, conversation, and fish. She was terrific with the kids and I had much more fun than I expected.
I've been before and not done the tour.
The building is kept very nicely with kid friendly interactive displays. Easy snacks at the desk. Outside feeding the fish in the pond, a few nice trails, picnic area and beautiful grounds.
This makes a nice family day trip, or just something to do alone if you want to get out of the house.

Fun

Great place to take a walk and learn about conservation and the life cycle of fish. The trails are very well kept and there are many choices to choose from. One of my favorite places that is near by Kalamazoo to get back to nature and just rest and relax. I cant wait till the tours start back up.

Outstanding facility. Learned alot about history of fishing in Illinois, state fish records, antique fishing tackle, fish biology, fish breeding and stocking, & conservation efforts. Took a tour of the inside and outside pools where they are raising 4 breeds of trout currently. Educator was very knowledgeable and shared his own fishing stories which made the tour very personable and fun. Great place to take your kids who are starting to fish to teach them about where many of our fish we catch come from. Free admission a nice perk, but I'd pay to go back. Looking forward to volunteer opportunities when it comes time to tag the trout before they are released into Lake Michigan.

I took my grandsons here. They had so much fun!! They enjoyed the ponds and walking around them. The inside was closed but that's ok. I was happy to see them enjoy it as much as their mom did when I took her there as a child.

What a relaxing and beautiful place! I've started walking here a year ago and now have seen all 4 seasons of the spectacular beauty the lake has to offer. Very grateful to have this hidden gem so close to me.

This place is awesome for fish lovers and nature lovers alike. The main pond is full of huge trout, sturgeon and muskie to name a few. They also have trails that run all along the many other ponds. I love going here and see plenty of wildlife every trip!
