I have to say I wanted to see what an opera was like. I really enjoy watching musicals at the ACT and SHN theater company. An opera is a completely different experience and not every opera will be my thing. We watched Delores Clayborne which is an adaption of a Stephen King novel. I really wished I liked this, but I didn't. It was just the characters that didn't work for me. The facilities is absolutely beautiful. Maybe I'll try something else like Moby Dick or more of a classical theme.

Being a great opera lover I found the experience mixed. Non-air-conditioned place ... oven heat. Uncomfortable seats. And the opera (Carmen) had been cut from its original version

Watched Rigoletto--Amazing performers, not so great acoustics. Although I didn't purchase fancy seats, i expected phenomenal acoustics all the way to balcony (I've been to many opera houses) Only if I had known, I would've invested more. They allow drinks with lids which is a plus (I don't get why people are still coughing..water should help!) Beautiful building regardless

Nice view and good sound in the cheap seats. Down side is cramped legs and it can get quite warm. The aluminum chandelier in the center is both interesting and very period. After the 1989 earthquake they had netting over the ceiling to protect against any large dropping elements. The ceiling color after the retrofit/remodel is definitely a better shade. Sets off chandelier better too. The air flow also got a step up.

About San Francisco Opera
San Francisco Opera is a world-renowned opera company that has been entertaining audiences for over 90 years. Founded in 1923, the company has become known for its commitment to commissioning new works and training some of the greatest young artists in the world of opera.
One of San Francisco Opera's most notable achievements is its long history of commissioning new works. Over the years, the company has commissioned numerous world premieres, including John Adams' "Nixon in China" and Jake Heggie's "Dead Man Walking." These works have gone on to become some of the most beloved operas in modern times.
In addition to its commitment to new works, San Francisco Opera is also known for its dedication to training young artists. The company's Merola Opera Program provides intensive training and performance opportunities for emerging singers, conductors, and coaches. Many graduates of this program have gone on to successful careers in opera houses around the world.
San Francisco Opera is also home to some of the most talented performers in the industry. The company's roster includes internationally renowned singers such as Renée Fleming and Susan Graham, as well as up-and-coming stars like Nadine Sierra and Michael Fabiano.
The company performs at two venues: The War Memorial Opera House located at 301 Van Ness Avenue which was built-in 1932 with a seating capacity of approximately 3,200 people; while Diane B Wilsey Center for Opera located at Fourth Floor Veterans Building (401 Van Ness Avenue) serves as an administrative office space with rehearsal studios used by San Francisco Ballet School among others.
San Francisco Opera offers a wide range of productions each season that appeal to both seasoned opera-goers and newcomers alike. From classic operas like Verdi's "La Traviata" or Puccini’s “Madama Butterfly”to contemporary works like Mason Bates' "The (R)evolution Of Steve Jobs," there is something for everyone at San Francisco Opera.
In addition to its regular season productions, San Francisco Opera also hosts special events throughout the year such as concerts featuring popular singers or holiday-themed performances that are perfect for families looking for a festive night out.
Overall, San Francisco Opera stands out among other companies due to their commitment towards innovation through commissioning new work while still maintaining high standards when it comes down traditional repertoire performances. With their exceptional talent pool from performers all over globe combined with state-of-the-art facilities makes them one-of-a-kind experience not just locally but globally too!
